Tidy in Stages

nell18-3 by nell18-3 Young Parent(October 2007) (rank 1st)
Am I the only one who can spend time tidying my boys rooms

Only to find that a few minutes later

Disaster !!!

I must have missed the earthquake that only hit their room !!!

I walk in and don't know where to start.....

Funny thing is when you ask them to tidy up

They look at me as if to say

You expect me to pick all this up !!!

From a young age with all mine
I knew they would never understand the concept of "Tidy Your Room"
So we always did it in stages
This was particularly good for my youngest with the ADHD as it never works to give him a big project to undertake without giving him thorough and basic stages of achieving the final goal

Look around the room and give them one instruction at a time

The instruction tidy your room to a child is something they just don't grasp!!
They hear Tidy Up
They interpret this as "Kick everything under the bed out of sight!!!!!!"

I used to start with
Make your bed and put all your shoes together in piles then come and find me
Children think that sounds easy enough and are more inclined to do it

Next see all your clothes that are sticking out of the drawers, fold the ones that are unfolded and you can shut the drawers better
Again this is quite easy and not too overwhelming for the child

Then comes the fun part
See all the lego, bricks, cars, dolls pick them all up and put them into the right containers

Already the transformation is happening

How about all the book or comics that are no longer in a tidy pile??

By now you can see parts of the flooring and all the felt pens spread out most with no lids on????
So there is the next stage

Finally you are left with the odd pieces that never seem to have a home and the bits of rubbish on the floor and of course the odd socks!!!!!!!!

Maybe I am crazy, maybe this only happens in my home

Eventually I am left with their tidy bedroom once again.............
Well for five minutes anyway

Re: Tidy in Stages
This sounds like fun.  I do this with E, but considering we share our space it can be hard.
Peace

Re: Tidy in Stages
Great advice - in fact, we have an adult in this house who will find this really helpful... Especially in his office area, apparently there is a desk under the pile in there somewhere.  I already divide things up in my head too - and those small wins get you on to the next task without it being too overwhelming.

I've seen desks like that, apparently its organised chaos and they know exactly where everything is

Re: Tidy in Stages
Do u know..I still have to do this with my 11 yr old son. I tell him to tidy his room and he looks at me blankly. U can hear his brain cranking round inside his head as he is trying to understand what i have said! I have given up repeating my self tho so instead i write a big fat list of all the little jobs he has to do in his room and he ticks them off until he is finished. See im a bit**, i dont let him on the computer until he finishes!! Hoping one day that he will figure out that it is easier and quicker if he just keeps it tidier to begin with!!

Re: Tidy in Stages

Yet again another great article.  I'll be bookmarking it for when my son gets older!  I've never thought doing things like that - in stages.

Re: Tidy in Stages
You are not the only one - except for me it is not just their bedroom, but every other room in the house.  This is so true about breaking something up and giving specific instructions.  It works in every area too - not just tidying.  So often we are upset our kids haven't obeyed us when they don't really know what is expected - breaking it down makes it clearer.  It also makes it easier to face and I find that too - when there is something I am putting off doing, I just tell myself "I'll just do part of it then take a break" - once I've done that little bit the whole job is easier.

Re: Tidy in Stages
Thats funny
I do that kind of thing myself too, usually though just by starting it gives me the drive to get the job done and I keep at it to get it out of the way

Re: Tidy in Stages
Another great piece of advice . .

Stages always work so well . . . I've even gone another set and broke the stages into different times in the day and also have lovely handmade poster discreetly hidden inside the wardrobe and also behind the door. . .  This works well for my 8 yr old who is very easily side tracked.

Something tells me I may have probs with my 16 month old as she has way to much energy and can't sit still for any length of time not even to eat! . . Oh well - to be young again . . lol

Cheers Kellz

Re: Tidy in Stages
I used to break the day up too with tidying when mine were younger, now they know the sooner they get it done the sooner they are free to do other things, but we still work with the stages.
It seems mine are incapable of looking at a messy bedroom and figuring out where to start LOL

Re: Tidy in Stages
My oldest was always a tidy freak, we used to call him Monica (Friends) my daughter was the messiest with the other two, both are reluctant to tidy but the youngest is usually the one who does the better job
