YOUR MEDICINES AND YOUR CHILDREN revised

Your medications and your children

This is just a friendly reminder to you all about the safety of your medicines and your children.  Today talea my 22mth old managed to climb up on the back of my lounge chair and got a bottle of tablets of the kitchen bench, her father had left there.  I came in from hanging the washing out and she had the bottle opened and only one tablet left sitting on the floor beside her.  And she was telling me lollie and pointing to her mouth.  Apart from nearly having heart failure I quickly rang my partner at work and asked him how many he had left in there.  He told me there were at least 4 in the bottle. So she had swallowed three of them.

I called 13health and informed them of what had happened.  He ran through some side effects with me, but she was only showing a few signs like hyperactivity.  And unsteady on her feet.  He advised me to take her straight to the hospital to get checked out.

On the way to the hospital she fell asleep my heart started to race.  It turns out that she only fell asleep because it was her nap time and she was ready for a sleep. Silly mummy.

The tablets she had taken were panafcort, a brand of steroid. The doctors said she was fine and the worst that will happen is that she’ll probably get some vomiting and dihorea.  Lucky for her.

But this is no joke this time we were lucky not all children who take tablets are.

            How to store your medications.

·        Keep out of reach of children

·        Always put away

·        Store in a locked cupboard

·        If you don’t have a locked cupboard. Then store them in a container which is hard for kids to open and put it up in a high cupboard.

Some thing you may need to do if your child has taken some of your medication

  • Contact your nearest emergency department for advise
  • Call an ambulance
  • Transport child to hospital
  • Take the medication with you to hospital
  • If going to hospital and you have other children remember to take drinks and snacks for them. You could be there a while

So people please remember to put your medicines away where the little ones can’t get them.

HUGS GEORGIE

Re: YOUR MEDICINES AND YOUR CHILDREN

Absolutely. Making a mistake with medicines is something we don't want to experience.

Put away all medicines (even children's medicine) in a cabinet that has a lock or is child-proof and preferrably out of reach. If the cabinet is within a child's reach, always close/lock it. Sometimes with child locks, we forget to close it after opening. Also, make sure that the medicines are in childproof containers. Twist caps are very easy for young babies to open.

When taking a lot of medicines that must be taken after eating, place them in a child proof container/pill box. That way, if you take the pills with you at the table and leave it unattended, at least a child will  not be able to open it. My mother in law takes a lot of medicine (for blood pressure, diabetes, osteoperosis..etc) and some she takes before eating, some after eating. But she takes them by the handful to the table when she is in my house. I knew it was going to cause problems one day,  and thankfully, it wasn't with my son. She accidentally dropped one and one of my dogs ran for it. Thankfully, we were able to pick it up on time.

Glad shes ok
Jalan is a bugger for getting into tablets...only advantage is she likes tipping them on the floor and eating the silver foil around them...go figure
