What causes Childhood Obesity ?

BeingParents by BeingParents Speaking(October 2007) (rank 414th)

“We estimate that 22 million of the world’s children under 5 are overweight or obese.”
~Mary Bellizzi (an expert with the International Obesity Task Force)

Do you worry that your children are part of that statistic ? We should be worried. However, we must understand

the cause of obesity if we want to protect our children and even our ourselves as well. I am not an expert in obesity but some of the causes that will be presented here are or should be obvious. As parents,we are so busy that we might and do need reminders.

Causes of Obesity:

Junk Food:
Junks food is exactly that junk. Some parents give their kids junk food because that is the “only” thing their child will eat. Also junk food such as chips and candy are quick fix food. A general rule we have about food is that if is quick and fast it is usually unhealthy. Our daughter loves candy, like most kids, but we have phased into her diet sweet fruits such as apple, watermelon and grapes. She loves grapes.

Fast Food:
Because our kids are McKids they have sadly become obese. Some of us eat fast food everyday for every meal and so do our kids. Remember whenever food is fast it is generally NOT good for us. Don’t give into you kids nagging and crying when they are demanding fast junk. It is okay to reward them once in a blue moon but not every day or every week. Kids are very smart and actually smarter than we give them credit for. We must explain to our kids why fast food is not healthy. Take my word for it, they will understand and love you later in life for helping them to stay and grow healthy.

Your Eating Activity:
We are our children’s role models. Research has show that obese parents have obese kids. Research is great, but I think improving our lifestyle is greater. If we are eating the wrong foods(we know what those food are), then we must make a conscious decision TODAY the we will change our lifestyle. Remember our kids will walk like us,talk like us ,and even eat like us.
Taking responsibly it on on the most fulfill act we could do in our life time . Our kid look up to us. Don’t disappoint them by being a bad role model.

Re: What causes Childhood Obesity ?

I just read USA is still number one in obesity rankings.  So I isolate factors that the US has that other countries may not.  Sure TV, activity, etc all play a role, but I have to think it's something wrong with this country's food supply - I mean look at those rankings that's a stark reality.

TV, video games and generally less outside time are also culprits. Kids would rather just stay inside and watch TV and play video games nowadays.

Re: What causes Childhood Obesity ?

good advise, but equally important is exercise and activity and way less tv or inside time!

i insist the girls play a team sport every year, their choice what that sport is but they must do one, in summer they all have to do life saving and swimming, and even though i have to admit some saturday and sunday mornings id kill for a sleep in, i just love that my girls are fit and healthy and are developing team skills at the same time.

Re: What causes Childhood Obesity ?
So true. Why is it that heaps of companies are now marketing junk food so that the kids want it. I don't think many of the muesli bars, fruit bars, little bags of biscuits and very sweet yoghurts with cartoon characters all over them are as healthy as the advertisers try to make out too but it is all for convenience so that parents feel they need to buy for the lunch box instead of fresh fruit and containers with home made food in it. I think there is more to it then Maccas too but that is a start. I do put my hand up to too much convenience food at present but working on my time management skills.

Re: What causes Childhood Obesity ?
I agree that an unhealthy diet is a great contributor to childhood obesity... However there are also many parents who provide their children with healthy food, and very little 'junk food' and still have over weight children.  They feed their children too much, allowing them to snack too much between meals.  They give then portions that are too large - often kids don't stop eating when they are satisfied, they continue until they are too full to eat anything else.  They also allow their children to have many unhealthy drinks, and don't realise how many calories are in all natural fruit juice, cordials and other soft drinks.

Another huge contributing factor is lack of activity.  Parents who don't play or didn't used to participate in sporting activities may not think to involve their children in them.  Kids are often driven to and from school, and to attend extra curricular activities... We need to make time for them to walk places, participate in some sort of physical sport or activity, and get outside and play with them.  If you are unable to be a role model that they can see playing in a sport or excercising, take them to see someone they know, or just get them down to your local sports field to see other people.  Everyone needs to get off their butt and get moving, a healthy diet is a good start, however correct portions of food and excercise are just as important.

Re: What causes Childhood Obesity ?
very good point! I was brought up to walk & cycle everywhere, we grew our own veg and couldnt afford "junk food", but portion control...?! We were expected to finish everything on our plates and praised if we went back for seconds. Hard as it is for me to see food wasted, Im trying to let my daughters stop eating when they're full and not over cater! And when E nags me to walk & cycle everywhere, I try not to talk her out of it!

Re: What causes Childhood Obesity ?
With all of my kids, I put less on their plate than I know they can eat. If they are still hungry they may go back for more. If not they don't. Most times I will have leftovers cause they don't want it, but if I put it all out in the beginning they would eat it all. L

Re: What causes Childhood Obesity ?
LOL - I am a grazer - so it is hard to remember how much you eat in a day... I have noticed that many parents with pudgy kids (as in not cute baby fat - over weight), just feed their kids whenever they want something.

Some kids at 5yrs old are out eating me daily, but they don't actually do any excercise to use up the energy from that food.  We give Jaydee small portions, then more if he wants... Kids need to eat slowly and chew properly - then they will know when they have had enough.

I really do like the fact that you have your own vege garden and do all that walking and cycling Katheryn, I read your blogs and want to join you!  I used to be embarrassed because after school our mum would offer us fruit and peas and carrot sticks fresh from the garden.  Now I am glad, as that habit is hard to break - even though I like treats, I just don't crave them, and a fresh juicy sweet strawberry beats most lollies hands down.

Re: What causes Childhood Obesity ?

I hope my kids are as good as you with a taste for the fresh stuff when they are all grown up! Certainly at the moment E is perfectly happy with an apple or a banana as a snack, and I can NEVER sow enough peas each spring to satisfy her LOL! But from my own experience I know that using the energy is the key - when I went away to college at 18 and saw the stodgy fatty food they served in the canteen there, I knew I would be on a diet by Christmas! Instead, because I was so much more active with walking, cycling, sports, practicals etc, I came home 28lbs lighter! If I'd eaten then like I eat now it would have been twice that! Ah well, better keep on walking and cycling, even as the winter approaches here! But it's a good principle. Hardly any of the kids at DD1s school arrive on foot or bike. The kids arent even allowed to leave their bikes AT the school during the day, so I have to carry DD1s bike home and back. And UK roads are so congested most of my friends think I'm mad to be cycling on the road with two young kids. No wonder so many kids are over weight!

Reading about kids needing to eat slowly made me chuckle - DD1 has got to be the world's slowest eater. It's like watching paint dry! But if you leave her long enough, she'll eat the lot! When she was younger her childminder used to strap her into her highchair for lunch with her food laid out in front of her and the Disney Channel playing and go off and clean the kitchen. 1 - 1.5 hours later DD1 was done! But she enjoyed every mouthfull!!! So different to me - mum used to apologise when we went to family and friends for lunch - with me and my brother it was heads down and eat like we were in a race, no talking or anything! Perhaps that's why I dont know when Im full to this day? I read once that it takes 10 minutes from eating enough for your body to realise it's full. I can cram a lot into those extra 10 minutes!

Re: What causes Childhood Obesity ?
great advice there hun! i agree we as parents need to monitor what our kids eat and do the right thing by them. after all being a parent means we have to make decisions NOT our kids and sometimes they may not always like it but we should do whats best not whats popular.

Re: What causes Childhood Obesity ?
you are so right here.
If we set a good eating example then our kids will follow.
It's a great idea to limit the junk food... perhaps one snack pack of chips a day or one small chocolate bar is fine, as we must remember that its extremely important to have a properly balanced diet, and this means that we do need some bad fat in our system.
Great advice and keep up the good work.
Cheers

Re: What causes Childhood Obesity ?

I very much agree with your last paragraph about being role models. I dont want to get my daughters into a diet mentality (I've seen thin daughters of dieting mums copying them, which isnt healthy either), so I have had to think about how I eat healthily in front of my daughters, as I dont want them to struggle with obesity as I have. I always try to have plenty of veg, lots of variety, lots of salads, and encourage them to have a bite of everything on their plate, even if they didnt like them last time, as tastes change and "when you're bigger you'll probably like that". It seems to have worked, though I must admit I do have two good eaters, which makes it easier.

And like you say, explaining things can help - I explained to my 5 year old tonight why she couldnt have extra icecream "as you're about to go to bed and icecream has loads of energy in it and you wont have time to use all that energy up before you go to sleep". She seemed to grasp that.
