Munchausen's Syndrome by Proxy.

emmysmum by emmysmum Talking Back(October 2007) (rank 24th)
Ok guys, just to let you all know, i have taken most of the information from the following two websites, and made it a bit easier to understand...
I haven't done a direct copy and paste though...
sids-network.org/experts/msp.htm

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fabricated_or_Induced_Illness

Most of you who watch
Dr Phil may have seen this. It was actually something that really got to me and made me upset. On tuesday Dr Phil ran the show and this time it was on someone with Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy.

What is it? Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy is also known as Fabricated or Induced illness (FII). It is a phsyciatric and psychological PARENTING disorder in which involves a carer (usually a parent) inflicting harm upon the child, sometimes another adult, in order to gain attention to themselves and to make friends with hospital staff.
They inflict this pain or make up symptoms and then seek medical attention.

Who is the Perpetrator?? Well in most cases it's the parents - and its generally the mother not the father.
In the case that Dr Phil was showing on TV..... The mother was the perpetrator. I began to feel sick when they told of what she did.

What are some things to look out for? Guys, this illness is very serious and needs to be watched for carefully, as it can happen to anyone.
Here are a few signs that may help indicate munchausens by Proxy in someone you know, or someone you see down town.
  • A parent who makes up things to be wrong with their child
  • A parent who constantly abuses their child then trots off to the hospital to seek medical attention
  •  A parent who puts their child through unnecessary test and medical procedures (tracheostomies being one of them).
Whilst there appear to only be a few cases (2000 as of 2003), the count is increasing.

So please, if you see or know anyone with these symptoms, don't hesitate to try and help them....before they murder their child!
Cheers

Re: Munchausen's Syndrome by Proxy.

Actually, this is not a real condition. Please be careful when watching media stories, these kind of false accusation hurt and destroy families.

For more information see http://www.msbp.com/ . I was invloved in the Australian arm of this support group for a while. The UK (doctor) paediatrician Roy Meadows, who invented this condition to cover his incompetance in diagnosis,  was stripped of his medical license and charged in the UK courts in 2006. There are doctors in this country who continue to diagnose mothers of this fabricated condition, and in the process wrench their children away and into the foster and social services departments. It is almost impossible to prove innocence to something that has no proven symptoms.

Many desperate and pleading mothers of ill children are wrongly accused of this when the medical experts are unable to diganose a childs condition. This is very common in celiac disease, and modern day allergies. My involvement stemmed from being accused of this fabricated crime many years ago - thats my baby boy in the middle of my pic. He has multiple food allergies, most of all to natural sugars.

Time has got away from me, but i would be more than happy to have more talks on this subject, it is very dear to my heart!

Re: Munchausen's Syndrome by Proxy.
Thanks for sharing this.  Sadly, the reality is, there are many more cases that go undetected.  There are a lot of children who appear to suffer chest illness, but in fact, their parents cause it by telling them to not play sport because they will end up hurt.  As these children don't really have an opportunity to give their lungs a  proper workout through sport, they end up suffering from respiratory distress of some sort when they do play sport  Straight away, the parents say asthma and take them to the hospital.  The kids grow up believing they are inflicted with the disease, when in fact, it has been caused by parental paranoia.  There is protecting your kids and then there is over protecting them.

There is also a belief that parents have a need to feel needed and that is why they do it.  There is another form of it too.  A lot of fire bugs light fires so that they can then be involved in the rescue and be considered a hero.  Again, they do it for the attention; the need to be needed.  These people have often grown up in sheltered or abusive situations and find this is the only way they can be noticed.

I lived for a while with a woman who was a 'professional rescuer', that is she wanted to 'rescue' people from their situations.  But, they had to do it her way.  This usually ended in tears, hers, as the solutions she was offering or the advice, was not suitable to the person or was more harmful than the initial problem.  She tried it on me, and it backfired big time! lol.

Doctors often think parents are over protective at times because of this disease (yes, it is a recognized mental illness) and parents with a genuine concern are often left feeling as though they don't count.  The reason is, because they are too afraid to get involved with a parent who is 'dependent' on the attention they give.

Gosh, sorry that was so long.  I did an assignment a few years back on it, also read a bit after my oldest was born.  It is really sad that it happens.  The parents need help, but the right sort.
