Teaching Your Child To Tie Shoe Laces

ellamia by ellamia Talking Back(November 2007) (rank 44th)

Tying shoe laces is a step a child has to learn. It can sometimes be a frustrating time or sometimes they just pick it up with ease. Velcro, crocs and shoes with zips have now come in which has made tying shoe laces gone out the window which

has made life easier but it is a good experience and hand co ordination to learn how to tie shoe laces.

School shoes and sports shoes still have laces but a lot of shoes now are coming out with Velcro, and zips. According to articles and some experts learning how to tie shoe laces is a handy skill to learn and good for the fine motor skill development.

It’s a good idea to try and teach your child how to tie shoe laces at the age of 5 before they start school as it will be a excellent thing for your child to learn this type of fine motor skill. Keep in mind that it will not be a overnight process it will take time for them to learn and you to teach them.

As you tie your Childs shoe laces everyday and when it gets to the point on teaching you child how to do this, it is also very hard to describe what your fingers are actually doing. Here are some tips to help teach your child to tie there shoe laces without too much frustration.

  • Start by doing one step at a time and repeatedly teaching that same step until they have mastered it before starting a new step.
  • Try using flat shoe laces as they are easier for their fingers rather than the round shoe laces.
  • When teaching them sit behind them rather than sitting in front of them and bring your hands around so they can see what your doing and help join in.
  • An idea is to use two different colours to tie together so you can point out which lace you want the child to handle.
  • Laces should be long enough for their little fingers to handle them such as giving them a old pair of your shoes to practice on.

Tying your shoe laces is a skill that comes so naturally to us that you don’t know how to describe how or what we are doing. So try some of these ideas and teach your child how to tie their shoe laces it’s a good step in their life to learn.

Re: Teaching Your Child To Tie Shoe Laces

my son begged to learn to tie shoes.  Great advice.  I had this little doll as a child that had shoe strings, buttons and snaps on it so that I would learn all three. Great advice

Re: Teaching Your Child To Tie Shoe Laces

My son doesn't even want to learn to tie his shoe he rather put on the shoe with the Velcro and leave the others alone. So hopefully this will work if I can get his mother to make him wear the Laced shoes.

Re: Teaching Your Child To Tie Shoe Laces

Well done....you have no idea how hard it is to explain to someone how it's done until you have to!!  I've been trying to get my son to do it since about 5.  I had to buy him velcro shoes because they do swimming and the teacher wouldn't help or wait for anyone to do their shoes....and they are all so slow and need help!!  I thought that was a bit mean.

But suddenly this year he had done it!!  Just showed him again one day and hey presto!!  He was the same with taking training wheels off the bike, i think somehow it just clicks into place.  It's great when they can do it all by themselves, and you really  have some good tips here that i'll refer to with my next son.

Thanks Julie

Re: Teaching Your Child To Tie Shoe Laces

When my oldest started school part of their homework every night was to practice tying their laces. I'm very lucky as it took 2 weeks for him to get it down pat, but I was very patient with him and made sure he practiced and I also got him to tie his laces himself every morning for school too.........I've always bought him school shoes with laces as well, they are slightly more expensive too which is terrible.

Great article......

Amanda

Shoe laces. Arrrrrrgh. Roo at 7 still cannot cope. It is a fine motor and sequential skill, which bless are her worst attributes. Piglet loves to untie and try to tie up her laces and everybody elses. I think she is going to enjoy learning it.

 Great advice. Luv Winnie.xx

Some children take longer than others i wouldnt worry too much. They all develop at all different ages. Thats good piglet is doing this. She sounds like she is enjoying it.
