Ideas and tips on xmas shopping

cazza by cazza Young Parent(November 2007) (rank 2nd)
Every year i used to stress about what was i going to buy for rellies and kiddies in the family.. Now my kids are older and so are the others this is what we do..

. Buy a present for our children and stick under the tree to the value of $10 and put it from aunt, uncle etc
.  Buy a gift for the whole family -like for my aunt, her and my nan get one present from all of us..
. Gift vouchers are great and we usually give those to my dad and let him buy what he needs for him self....
.Set a limit on how much you spend on one Gift,......
.. Family Portraits are a real Hit and dont cost much, and by sticking them in the xmas card that cost less then a pressie...
... Layby items in middle of the year is a great bonus as it gives u time to pay of just $5 a week.....
...Chriscos can come in handy for some, and its more of a convience for most then cutting cost....
.Home made or School pressies are so cool, and its amazing how creative our children can be....

For my children they know its the thought that counts not how much the Gift is worth,,,,

We also do a wish list and cross of what is more important and wont get stuck in the back of the wardrobe and looked at in the next 12 months....

Love to know others ideas and how do you  have a stress free xmas

Hi Cazza,

You have given some great ideas, any ideas that take the stress out of xmas, is a plus. I like the idea of setting a limit, early laybys and gift vouchers.

But i specially like your last piece.....that your children know that it is the thought, that counts.

Re: Ideas and tips on xmas shopping
i reckon that gourmet hampers you buy from Big W are pretty good for a family....you get a huge hamper for around about 30 bucks.... not too expensive and the basket from the hamper can be used later as a picnic basket, a fruit basket or as a shopping basket.
Great advice! I also love making my own cards (not that i do it often) and its often much cheaper than buying them.
Thanks for sharing your tips.... Cheers

Re: Ideas and tips on xmas shopping
Great ideas Cazza.  We also start our shopping when our tax return comes in.  I've found that by overestimating my income throughout the year, we get a nice lumpsum of it at the end of the financial year.  We don't miss it and comes in handy for starting on chrissy shopping.  This year, as well as laybys, we have bought a lot of things through ebay which started about 4 months ago.  We are almost done here.  Just need a few more things for my parents and sisters and to check what we've got for the girls.  We also get 5 gifts from Santa for each of the girls and 5 that they share!  I just gotta remember to get wrapping paper.

Re: Ideas and tips on xmas shopping

Great ideas cazza. We have a $20 limit with the adults but go crazy with the kids in my family as there are only 4 of them, easier last year when there were only 2! But start lay-by very early!

Take it easy

Dee.

Re: Ideas and tips on xmas shopping

Great ideas.  I have a budget no more than $ for each person.  Think hard write a list, then my girlfriend and I pick a day during the week about a month b4 christmas and do it all in one hit.

Take care - Angie

Re: Ideas and tips on xmas shopping
We do all 3 hampers. ( Hamper King, Castles and Chrisco ) and we save on food that way at the end of the year, and we do gift vouchers also, and buy one a week at the value of $20 for each member of the household and family too, and we start this in August and it's great how the vouchers last for a year. Great article and great tips.

Re: Ideas and tips on xmas shopping

Well done Cazza.

I also make fruit cakes and wrap them for relatives. This works well as most ppl dont like making them but do like the xmas cakes. I have a great recipe and between hubby and I we can do around 10 a day when and if we need to. Great way to keep things cheap too.

Cheers Kellz

Re: Ideas and tips on xmas shopping

Great tips.  Laybys are a good idea and i usually stick to a $ limit for each person.  Sometimes i buy two of the same thing if they are a good price and give to the nieces, they are in different countries, so don't know they are getting the same thing.

Christmas decos are alway cheaper in january too, as well as wrapping paper and cards....if you can be motivated to buy them that early

Thanks Julie
