Aren’t we glad we weren’t giving birth a 100 years ago where people couldn’t afford doctors and just had to rely on other sources maybe even word of mouth. I have heard and read a few stories about the good old days back in England from my
old nan that passed away recently.
The Pregnancy And Birth
Well it would have been a very dirt y pregnancy for the nine months for the mother to be apparently pregnant women weren’t allowed to bathe or have a shower. The shower-bath is too great of shock to they system and a warm bath is however too relaxing. How can you ever be too relaxed? Also you weren’t even allowed to think about bathing at the beach as ocean swimming could cause illness to the fetus.
Once your labour started you were in for an experience as there was no heat in the birthing suite not even if it was winter or cold weather. It was thought that heat could make the mum-to-be and baby loose their energy. But this was probably the least of the mum’s problems.
When labour was over grease was applied internally and externally as it was supposed to be quite soothing. I don’t think so! Then the mum was then washed down with some red wine and some water. The mum then wasn’t allowed to leave or move from her bed for 24 hours after the birth. Then after the third or fourth day after the birth her dress could be changed as it was said she was to wear the same dress with blood and sweat on for days.
Mother At Last
Well when that had trouble breast feeding, they had no one to turn to like these days. Not even Minti. You couldn’t use nipple cream like you do now as it was said to poison the baby if they were teething. If medicine was to be given it had to be by the nurse. And back in those times women didn’t do the washing either it was the man now how come that doesn’t happen these days? It was apparently perilous to the women to do the washing.
So conclude this. Think that we are lucky we have nice public and private hospitals with all the staff equipped to do our births and after care.
