Re: head lice remedy

It's great to use essential oils to deal with the dreaded nits - I use tea tree and lavender oils in treatments for my own daughter.

So I'm very sorry to have to say this, but as an aromatherapist I have to urge caution in the use of sassifras oil. There are any number of sites recommending its use for head lice, but it can be very dangerous. Sassifras oil contains large amounts of substances which can be carcinogenic. The FDA banned its use many years ago in foods and similar products. And the TGA here in Australia states that it can only be considered safe for use in topical treatments where the concentration is under 1%. Some commercial lice treatments contain it but in quantities well below that level.

My suggestion would be to stick to the tea tree and lavender oils. They are by far safer for our kids and I have had alot of success with them myself. But I would not touch the sassifras oil, just to be safe.

Sorry to put a dampner on your advice as otherwise I completely agree with using natural substances rather than alot of chemicals.

Cheers xx

Re: head lice remedy

It's hard to get accurate information on the net - there are so many sites giving out recipes like this with no mention of the risks. So I can understand your difficulty.
So a bit of background on sassifras oil. Firstly it is heavily regulated by the FDA (in the US) and the TGA (here in Australia) so it is not an oil you wil readily find - so to some degree my caution may be academic. But it doesn't hurt to know the details.
Sassafras oil contains large amounts (80-90%) of safrole, a phenol compound along with smaller amounts of a lot of other substances including other phenols and keytones. Safrole is a precurser to the production of certain illegal drugs and this together with it's reported toxicity is the reason why it is so heavily regulated.
Now taken internally even a minute few drops of sassifras can be lethal. But  remember that essential oils can also be absorbed through the skin. So the oil can still get into your body even if you do not swallow it directly.
Now the amount you absorb will be less than if you took the oil internally. But the amount your recipe requires is quite a lot. A teaspoon, which is around 5 mls, is equivalent to around 100 drops. So even absorbing a little could be problematic. Also we are talking about a mix that is being put on children's heads and could conceivably get into their eyes or mouth. It would not take much of this mix to potentially cause harm. Also Sassafras oil is a skin irritant.
Some commercial products contain sassafras oil but in very very small amounts, sometimes at less than one tenth of 1%. Others use other oils or herbs.
I don't want to scare people away from using essential oils at all. But please for anyone wanting to use essential oils, please do some research before embarking on any new recipes. If you are very interested in the subject then get hold of some good books or enrol in an aromatherapy course. There are some great aromatherapy sites out there but do check the qualifications of the person giving the advice before proceeding.

Re: head lice remedy
I've heard just lavender oil gets rid of the lice too. eldest daughter had lice, and luckily enough i love the smell of lavender so i had the oil on hand, and what i did was to get her to put the oil in her hair, and leave it in there for an hour, and then got her to go for a shower to rince out, and then wash her hair, and all the lice had gone.
