8 Weeks Pregnant

Anonymous Author (November 2007)

If you have just found out you are pregnant now is the time to see your doctor or midwife to arrange ante-natal care or if the pregnancy was/is unplanned you may need to seek advice or counciling. Your local family planning services or doctor/midwife will be able to offer advice and help.

In the eighth week you may be experiencing pregnancy symptoms such as morning sickness, fatigue, tender breasts, missed period, urinary frequency. You may be feeling flushed due to your blood supply being increased. It is recommended to get plenty of rest at this time. And you may be experiencing constipation due to and increase in the hormone progesterone, this can be fixed by adding some extra fiber into your daily diet.

You should NOT take any medication during pregnancy unless your doctor or midwife has approved them first. You also need to take good care of yourself, eat a healthy diet, exercise lightly, get plenty of rest and keep your fluid intake up (minus the caffeen)

From here on in you may find some of your clothes done fit or are uncomfortable to wear, loose fitting or elastic waisted pants / skirts will help with this problem. Your uterus is now the size of a grapefruit!

The baby is now around the 2 cm mark and weights about 1.5 grams. The babies arms and legs have now grown and extended. The baby is now refered to as a fetus and not an embryo.

32 weeks to go...

Re: 8 Weeks Pregnant
I just wanted to add that here in the U.S. (sorry I don't know if this is the same practice everywhere else in the world), women usually have their first ultrasound at 8 weeks. The ultrasound at this point would be a transvaginal one. Some women wonder if this hurts, and of course we can all say that it doesn't. It may be uncomfortable but definitely doesn't hurt.  To prepare for the ultrasound, we are asked to drink a lot of water an hour before the appointment. Oh, I remember being very very uncomfortable waiting in the waiting room. I actually asked the receptionist if I could please go and pee just a little just so I wouldn't be in pain. LOL

Re: 8 Weeks Pregnant
I am in Australia and in both my pregnancies I had a dating scan and then at about 11 weeks another scan and a blood test to determine the risk that my baby had a genetic condition.
I don't know anyone who had their first ultra sound at 18 weeks. Admittedly many in  a lower risk group than me would have only one ultrasound before that.
At my first pregnancy the risk factor was high so an amnio was arranged for 15 weeks. The amnio is performed during an ultrasound. The ultrasound showed that I my baby was very sick and the doctor warned me that I would miscarry anyday. The results of the amnio test (genetic testing) showed that my baby had Turners Syndrome. We lost Baylee at 17 weeks.
Two years and two days later Natalya was born healthy and well.

Re: 8 Weeks Pregnant

I'm glad this discussion is out. Always great to know how countries differ with these things.

The ultrasound at around 18 - 20 weeks would be the 2nd one on a normal pregnancy.

Re: 8 Weeks Pregnant
I am in Australia and I have noticed routine tests such as ultrasounds differ as time goes on. When I had my daughter I just had the one ultrasound at 18-20 weeks. Then when I was with my son I had a dating scan at about 10 weeks. This was not internal. I think in Australia they avoid internal ultrasounds unless they are absoultely necessary. (I have had 2 when I was bleeding and I went onto miscarry).
With my youngest I had a scan at about 24 weeks cos they were all booked out until then. I then went onto to have a scan at 33 weeks but this was not routine.
Whoops I have rambled.

Great article!
