Babies & Club Feet ( Talipes)

janicepovey by janicepovey Minti Founder(November 2007) (rank 29th)

Babies can be born with many deformities,  some more  serious than others and some more easily treated than others.

"Club Foot",  (  where the front half of the foot turns in & down  & is detected at

birth ), is a deformity of the foot, caused by mis- alignment of the bones in the foot, can usually be rectified with appropriate treatment, after which the child can enjoy a normal development.

Although it is not a common deformity, it is more prevalent in boys than girls and may affect only one foot, or sometimes, both.

An orthopaedic specialist can  recommend either plaster casts and splints to reverse the condition, or in more severe cases, surgery is an option.

Usually the plaster casting treatment is started from day one, ( above the knee's to the base of the toes ), with the plaster being changed every week to start off with, then every two weeks.  It is very important to keep the plaster casting dry at all times....gladwrap can be used to cover plaster while bathing. To prevent plaster sores.....cotton wool or skin cream can be used around the top of the plaster.    Where splints are used, the foot  is lowered into the splint and attached to a bar which can be gradually adjusted as the foot starts to straighten. In less severe cases, a light weight  splint, held on by  velcro  may  be all that is  required.

In cases where this treatment is not successful, then surgery at about 6 months has a very high success rate.  This involves a 1 -2 day in hospital  followed by plaster and splint treatment.

Most children who are treated early for this condition have no long term efforts, although it is possible to have a relapse in later life.  However, most  suffers enjoy a full recovery and can live a quite normal life. Indeed, some successful athletes were born with club foot.

It is reccommended that follow up treatment is sought as they develop, but it is  likely that the most serious long term effort is that they have one foot larger than the other.

My daughter was treated for club foot in one foot, from birth till she was 2 year old.....and went on to enjoy an active life & now is a police officer.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Regards Janice

Re: Babies & Club Feet ( Talipes)

So glad I saw this article.  I was born in 1961 with two clubbed feet.  At the time this cast treatment was experimental and I was one of the babies having it done very early.  This is also the first time that I've seen a photograph of a baby with clubbed feet... wow.

Re: Babies & Club Feet ( Talipes)

great advice. i was born with club foot and had an operation at 18 months to fix it. personally i dont remember it but my dad reasures me that i had an operation.  my mum also used to put my shoes on the wrong feet to help to get my feet to turn out. im left with one foot a size smaller than the other.  pregnancy hormones have caused my foot to turn in a little bit again.  my 4 year old is always tripping over and at one point i took her to the doctor and asked if her foot was slightly clubbed. i was told she will grow out of it. and recently i was told the same thing about my 13 month old. which im still thinking i need to take her for a second opinion.  its nice to see that you can find out pretty much anything on here.

Re: Babies & Club Feet ( Talipes)

Thankyou for commenting...I hope your foot didn't turn in too much when you were pregnant & that it's not causing you to much trouble now.

I think if it was me, I would also be getting a second opinion about your children, better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks so very much for writing an easy to understand article of this subject . .  Your daughter has done well in her life.

Re: Babies & Club Feet ( Talipes)

Back when my daughter was born no-one talked about Club Feet, like they didn't talk about cancer, just stared & thought if i get to close, i might catch it....but times have changed, where people want more information so they can have a better understanding of  conditions & illness's.

Re: Babies & Club Feet ( Talipes)
I'm sure this more painful to parents than it is for the kids. It makes me feel terrible just looking at it, but I am glad to know it is correctable. Is this due to the position of the baby in the womb? Or are there other causes?

Re: Babies & Club Feet ( Talipes)

Izzy,

I was told the cause is, from crowding in the uterus. Yes i also agree with you that is more painful for the parents, i can say many a tear was shed, this way.

Re: Babies & Club Feet ( Talipes)
terrific advice janice. i had to look as i was born with turned in feet and my mum was told i would need braces for my legs, she massaged my feet constantly at the advice of my grandmother with hot oil and turned them as much as she could each time and somehow they turned back out! i have never worn braces or anything, if i get tired my feet will go penguin style and i will ocasionaly trip over them if im super exausted lol but other than that im fine. i always had to wear good shoes for support but i still find it easier to wear none as i tuck my feet under me when i sit(very bad habit to pass on to your kiddies lol).

Sounds like your mum done a wonderful job, with massaging your feet and correcting this condition, but it does sound like you still suffer abit from it. Take care, my friend.

Re: Babies & Club Feet ( Talipes)
Lovely advice Janice, I am pretty sure there is another mum on the site with a child who has quite a serious case.  My beautiful niece was born with a club foot, and it caused her a lot of pain with many operations etc.  She is 13 now, and has had treatment to stop the growth of one of her legs (as it is about 6inches longer than the other), though her foot is still turned.  From memory, her leg was around the wrong way from the knee down.  She still limps, however she competes in athletics (mostly field events), and she plays centre at netball.  Her team one their grand finals for the year - and she has always been very brave and stubborn, and it hasn't stopped her having a great life.

Re: Babies & Club Feet ( Talipes)

Lui,

Your niece sounds like incredible young lady, to have been through  pain and operations and to have the fortitude, to not let it get her down.....good for her.

My daughter only had 2 years of treatment, with a doctor who was not very caring towards children, but thankfully, she came out the other side, ok.

Re: Babies & Club Feet ( Talipes)

A well written article Janice  .It brought back very recent memories for me when my son was born and the midwife asked my husband and i if we noticed anything about his foot and we both said no....but in that instant i knew that he had a club foot-talipes even though i had never seen the condition. His right foot  was like a backward c so for a long time he wore plasters and splints and had surgery when he was 6 months old,and the routine continued for a couple of years. His nearly 5 and he is a very active little boy who didnt let his condition stop him.

Thankyou for writing on this subject Janice as it is a surprise when it wasnt picked up in pregnancy when having the ultrasounds.

JOB WELL DONE!!!

Re: Babies & Club Feet ( Talipes)

It is a surprise this was not picked up during a ultrasound, not sure they could have have much about it anyway. Sorry your son had to go through the whole gamut of treatment for Talipes.

I'm pleased to hear that his condition didn't stop him from being a active and happy little boy.
