Coping With Morning Sickness

avanliamsmum by avanliamsmum Talking(November 2007) (rank 94th)

I'm an emetophobic, which is someone who has an intense fear of vomiting. People are amazed at how I went through 2 pregnancies and births without vomiting. As you can imagine, I researched a lot into morning sickness, and how to avoid it. I did feel sick on the odd occasion during both my pregancies, mostly my 2nd (as I couldn't relax and look after myself as I had a 9 month old to run after).

Morning sickness effects around half to two thirds of expecting mothers during the 1st trimester (the first 12 weeks usually) to some degree. They may just feel nauseous, or they may actually vomit. There are an unlucky few that may experience morning sickness all throughout their pregnancy (I don't envy them). Some mum's (1 in 1000) may also suffer from a severe type of morning sickness called Hyperemesis Gravidarium (this usually requires hospitalisation as the mum cannot keep anything down, loses a lot of weight and becomes dehydrated). It is called 'morning sickness' because it usually occurs in the morning, after a long night sleep with no food in a long time, but it can occur at any time of the day.

What causes morning sickness - The cause of morning sickness is still not well known. Some people say the high levels of pregnancy hormones can irritate the stomach directly. Also remember that making a baby is a huge change for your body, so this could also be the cause.

Here are some of my tips which helped me avoid morning sickness:

  • Always have something in your tummy. I kept muesli bars on my bedside table so I could have something to eat in bed before getting up. I kept food on me at all times so I never got hungry.
  • I drank plenty of water, and cut out soft drinks.
  • Ginger. This was a miracle for me. Luckily, I love ginger so I could happily munch away on some crystallized ginger or ginger beer. If you don't like ginger however, you can get ginger tablets from chemists and health food stores.
  • Avoid foods that make you feel nauseous (sounds obvious)
  • Eat a healthy diet. Try not to eat fried and fatty foods as this can aggravate morning sickness.
  • I found coffee made me feel ill (and I worked at Starbucks). Try to limit caffeinated drinks as caffeine can irritate the stomach.
  • Don't wear clothes that are too tight, especially around your abdomen.
  • Eat 'bland' food. I found I couldn't stomach spicy meals (and I normally love spicy food). Not really a time to be carb conscious, as bread, crackers, pasta and other grains are excellent.
  • Take time out to relax as often as you can, and try to get decent sleep!

I hope this helps some mum's to be out there! If anyone else has any tips for morning sickness, please comment!

Re: Coping With Morning Sickness
All very good tips.  I would like to add that when I got morning sickness with my 2nd child, I was in Africa and the woman that worked in my house always brought me mango to eat when I was feeling this way.  Amazing, it worked!  It is very wise to drink plenty of water as this will also help you later with your contractions.  The contractions can be worse on you if you are not properly hydrated.  Then again, each of is different and what works for some, may not work for others.  Remember to call your doctor if you are suffering a lot with the morning sickness.

Thanks for your advice.

Sincerely,

Aaliyah

Oh the wonderful part of pregnancy, I was one of those unlucky few that experience from start to finish, from morning to night.....  My first was the worst, I could not keep much down, I lived off fruit and cereal and ginger tea...  and because of this I was basically made to stay in bed, the worst experience of my life thank god the next two were not quite as bad.....  x

Re: Coping With Morning Sickness

Ahh dont remind me. I used to get it at work in the Afternoon, there was also a collegue who was suffering also. We would take turns on running to the loo. We used to munch on ginger like crazy, and carried bags of healthy snacks into meetings. At one meeting our Boss turned round at the end, and said I may not be a mum, but ladies, I have clicked as to what is happening, our secret, but I want to be on list for Baby sitting. So sweet, she even altered our hours so we would be home by 3pm, when the sickness came on. Sweet Woman. Great article.

Re: Coping With Morning Sickness

Morning sickness, oh just the words still bring hideous visions back to me. Mine started late, about 12 weeks but continued almost the whole way. Oh fun. I was a regular vomiter too unfortunately.

My tip is just to listen to your body, try to do what it wants! I found that I could only eat between about 9am and 3pm, if I ate breakfast or dinner it all came back up, but if I ate dinner at lunch time, I was usually ok. Basically the opposite of most people but that is just what worked for me. Most of the time anyway!

Those are some great tips! I will keep them in mind for next time and I hope they help other poor souls!

Re: Coping With Morning Sickness
Haha yeah, it wasn't easy working around coffee when I was feeling crook, especially when I got given 5.30am starts! I ended up working there all throughout the morning sickness period too. I look back and wonder how I did it.

Re: Coping With Morning Sickness

Morning sickness can be so hard to cope with........it's what I hated the most even more than ciatica (sp) and acid reflux........good thing for me it stopped right on the 12 week mark. A friend of mine was hospitalised numerous times with both her pregnancy's due to her morning sickness.

Great article....

Amanda
