Exercise and dieting the healthy way

Re: walking and loosing weight

Question:
Hi, has anyone lost weight by just walking and watching what they eat. Any tips of how to loose those last few kg?

My Advice:

Losing those last few kilos can sometimes be
hard work... especially if you find it hard to get motivated.
The best way to lose weight is to eat in moderation.
You can eat what you want but not when you want to! Alot of people think that if you go on special diets then you are going to lose the kgs forever... This i don't believe. You tend to get more fads in the long term.... and the weight only stays off for a few weeks.
Like i said, The key is moderation. Small meals regularly....with a balance of both good and bad fats.
For example.

Rather than eating 3 large meals a day..... cut it back to 5 or 6 smaller meals. In at least 2 of these meals, make sure you contain some sort of bad fat. Even if its only a couple of chips or a cream biscuit. But in saying this, that doesn't mean you should eat junk food crazily, so just have a nibble at a chip or two whilst having a piece of fruit - mix the foods. Your body needs bad fat so that the good bacteria in your body can work to fight it.

Drink plenty of water.... You need at least 2 litres of water a day. In the summer try and aim for 3 litres, as your body will require it and it will prevent you from dehydrating.... and cut down on  caffeinated drinks as they are bad for you....but in saying that one every now and then won't hurt!

When walking or doing other exercise, you need to do it at a pace that suits you, preferably fast enough so that you can JUST manage to hold a conversation... and it needs to be done for at least 20 minutes straight before your body will burn off the calories properly.

Reduce the amount of wheat and dairy products you eat, as this can also help you to lower the kgs and also help to reduce sleep apnoea if you have it.

And, don't worry if you put on a kilo or two whilst exercising and eating correctly! This is completely normal! Why? Because your body is turning fat into muscle and your muscles weigh more than fat.... but you will notice that you become more slim as your body gets used to burning the fat.

And finally, NEVER SKIP A MEAL!!! Why? Because your body will store the food you have in your body, which will turn into fat as your body won't be sure
as to when the next meal will be had!

Hope this helps a few people out there!

Cheers

Re: Exercise and dieting the healthy way

not bad advise, but after working in healthfood/nutrition for 15 years i have never

ever heard it said that bad fats help bacteria in the gut, in fact by eating potatoe chip or a cream biscuit the sugars are feeding the bad bacteria, or yeast and killing off the good bacteria, which ultimately leads to bloating and internal candida and makes weightloss even harder!

sorry but good fats are ok, ie flaxseed, nuts, avocado but not chips or cream biscuits, replace those with healthy snacks ie a carrot, banana or a smoothie!

Re: Exercise and dieting the healthy way
great advice. i saw once on an oprah show(sad eh lol) that its best not to weight ourself AT ALL for the first 6 weeks of trying to lose weight at least because as u said muscle weighs more.
i never ever weight myself unless my doc makes me lol i think its silly so i dont have scales.
long term weight loss is about making good choices and changing eating habits for GOOD not just for a few weeks. in saying that i love cheese lol so il always be a lil chubby but when i feel unhealthy its off for a walk not off for the diet pills

Great advice!!  I find my exercise bike better than a treadmill, burn more calories quicker!

As soon as you stop a diet, the weight just piles back on.

Thanks, Dee

glad you liked the advice.
and yes, i find that treadmills are only good if they are automatic ones where you can select your speed, as the other  types (Where your body powers it) your body can only work it so hard, so the electric ones really give your body a challenge!
I think meal replacement diets (shakes and stuff) are hopeless as you are starving your body and you end up putting weight on quicker when you stop.... they are dangerous in my opinion!
I believe in one diet.... and thats eat everything in moderation and in small portions... more fruit and veg and meat than junk of course haha.
