11 Weeks Pregnant

Anonymous Author (November 2007)

If you have just found out you are pregnant now is the time to see your doctor or midwife to arrange ante-natal care or if the pregnancy was/is unplanned you may need to seek advice or counciling. Your local family planning services or doctor/midwife will be able to offer advice

and help.

In the eleventh week and possibly from here on in you may experience the following;

  • morning sickness,
  • fatigue,
  • tender breasts,
  • missed period,
  • urinary frequency.
  • feeling flushed due to your blood supply being increased.
  • constipation, due to and increase in the hormone progesterone,
  • sleeplessness (try a glass of warm milk or a warm bath before bed... works wonders)
  • Gum Problems, due to increase in your blood flow. increasing your vitamin c may help.

On the up side some womens morning sickness and other symptoms may start to ease of at this stage!

Many women have their first antenatal appointment between 9 and 12 weeks, this is where you will be able to discuss the type of care you want for your pregnancy. You should also be offered screening for Down Syndrome which is usually done between 11 and 14 weeks by ultrasound and 14 - 20 weeks by serum testing.  You will also have a complete blood examination to test for things like Hep b and c HIV, rubella titre, syphillis, blood group / anitbody screen and iron levels. You will also get to hear your babies heart beat and the midwife / doctor will check the heart rate. (this is my fav part).

You should also arrange to book in for your Morphology scan/ Ultrasound for the 18 - 20 weeks mark. This is when you may be able to find out if your having a boy or a girl, and they will check the development of your baby. Most places book weeks in advance so get in early!

Remember whilst pregnant you cannot have xrays done and you will need to ask your doctor or midwife before taking ANY medication. Drinking alcohol and taking drugs are also NOT recommended as they will harm your babys develpopment.

Your baby  is now approximately the size of a plum and  weighs approximately 7 - 10 grams at this point. The growth of your baby is moving along at a rapid pace now and your baby's length will double in the next three weeks. The organs begin to function, the pancreas is producing insulin and the kidneys are producing urine. The baby swallows and urinates in the amniotic fluid and the fluid is continually replaced, thank god!

You are nearing the end of your third month now, only 29 weeks to go...

Re: 11 Weeks Pregnant

Just to clarify, the scan for Down's Syndrome is done between 11-13 weeks.  I was told by my GP that after 13 weeks they can't test for it this way.
