Making Christmas meaningful |

Christmas is a time when we celebrate peace and good-will to all men, and yet, increasingly it is a time that highlights the inequalities and inadequacies of our society. Christmas is a time when the poor are made to feel that they cannot provide adequately for their families, when the

lonely realize their “alone-ness” and those whose family situations are not peaceful find that conflict arises more often.
So, what can you do to make Christmas more meaningful this year?
Firstly, be aware of the people around you in need. If you have friends without family consider inviting them to join you in your celebrations. Place gifts under community trees for the poorer members of our community. Make donations to charities that serve the poor, homeless and lonely over Christmas – such as Lifeline and Anglicare.
Secondly, have a look at what your Christmas dollar is buying. Try and support smaller organizations or even small businesses that need your support. Have a look at the local markets and buy something a bit different this year – something hand made or fair trade. You can even make some presents yourself. And for the person who has everything, consider buying them something really useful – a goat or a well – see http://www.usefulgifts.org/ or http://www.worldvision.com.au/Smiles/GiftCatalogue/Default.aspx
Lastly, take some time this year to think about what makes Christmas special for you and make time to fit it in – whether it is spending time with your children making gifts, attending a local carol service or just ensuring you call some old friends you have not seen for a while. Try and make your home a place of peace and love this Christmas and you will be truly blessed
