12 Weeks Pregnant

Anonymous Author (December 2007)

If you have just found out you are pregnant now is the time to see your doctor or midwife to arrange ante-natal care.

In the twelth week and possibly from here on in you may experience the following;

  • morning sickness,
  • fatigue,
  • tender
    breasts,
  • urinary frequency.
  • feeling flushed due to your blood supply being increased.
  • constipation, due to and increase in the hormone progesterone,
  • sleeplessness (try a glass of warm milk or a warm bath before bed... works wonders)
  • Gum Problems, due to increase in your blood flow. increasing your vitamin c may help.
  • Headaches and lightheadedness. (due to the increase in blood volume or lack of protein.)

On the up side some womens morning sickness and other symptoms may start to ease of at this stage!

Many women have their first antenatal appointment between 9 and 12 weeks, this is where you will be able to discuss the type of care you want for your pregnancy. You should also be offered screening for Down Syndrome which is usually done between 11 and 14 weeks by ultrasound and 14 - 20 weeks by serum testing.  You will also have a complete blood examination to test for things like Hep b and c HIV, rubella titre, syphillis, blood group / anitbody screen and iron levels. You will also get to hear your babies heart beat and the midwife / doctor will check the heart rate. (this is my fav part).

You should also arrange to book in for your Morphology scan/ Ultrasound for the 18 - 20 weeks mark. This is when you may be able to find out if your having a boy or a girl, and they will check the development of your baby. Most places book weeks in advance so get in early!

Congratulations you are at the end of your first trimester and entering your forth month of pregnancy, people might be telling you that your glowing. Glowing is cause by the increased oil gland secretion and may cause acne break outs. Your going to start to feel better and less tired soon and alot of the symptoms mentions will stop, others will increase though like the urinanry frequency. You need to remember that everything you eat and drink effects your growing baby.

Remember whilst pregnant you cannot have xrays done and you will need to ask your doctor or midwife before taking ANY medication. Drinking alcohol and taking drugs are also NOT recommended as they will harm your babys develpopment.

This week your baby will have the swollowing reflex mastered and your babies lungs have taken shape. The fetus will measure between 3 - 5 cm long and weigh about 12 - 16 grams. The placenta has reachedmaturity and is acting as your babies lungs, kidney, immune system, digestive system and liver. Also a skeleton made of cartlidge is forming.

Only 28 weeks to go...
