Words can hurt children (part 2 of 2)

Amerlinwinga by Amerlinwinga Talking(December 2007) (rank 176th)

How can words Hurt?

Adults are often unaware of the negative effects that harsh, sarcastic and abusive words can have on children.

Words like:

Youre stupid!

Grow up!

Dont be so childish!

I

wish you were never born!

Can result in children believing they are useless, no good and will never amount to anything.

Children tend to believe what their parents tell them.

If the words used are harmful. then the children may develop low self esteem.

Remember- What you say to children can determine how they feel about themselves and how they feel about you.

Children who develop low self-esteem have usually been denied the basic right of every child: to be raised in a loving, caring, nurturing enviroment.

Some effects of low self esteem could be:

Behaviour problems

Poor school grades

poor employment opportunities

Breaking the law

Drug and Alcohol Use

Eating / Health issues

Destructive, violent behaviour

Lack of confidence

Withdrawal, anxiety, Insecurity

treating other people unfairly

SO THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK: USE WORDS THAT HELP, NOT HURT

I totally agree with you, as you can torment the child with these words.

Brilliantly written and so very true. It cuts some kids up if that is all that they are hearing any time someone opens their mouth. We all need to be aware of what we are saying. Leisa

Hey there,

I  agree words do hurt.... and more than we realize. But on the flip side we cannot beat ourselves up if we slip occasionally, I know I have......I feel as long as we try the best we can our kids will be fine. Great article

Yes we arent all perfect and we have all slipped once or twice in our lives. As long as we try that is the best that we can do.
