My Christmas Miracle - A True Story

LisaPetrarca by LisaPetrarca Talking Back(December 2007) (rank 92nd)

I know that this is a parenting advice website so after you read my true story, I have added some very important advice for all of you Minti parents in regards to Christmas this year........

My Christmas Miracle - A True Story

Christmas time was closing

in on me and it had been a hard year.  I was just newly separated and trying to support my three boys on a minimal income.   Not to mention my ex was not paying child support, in fact he had completely disappeared.  Christmas was just three weeks away.  The panic I felt was so different from the years of joy that Christmas had always brought me.  I knew that I would not be able to provide a Christmas for my kids.  I was barely able to put food on the table and a roof over our head.  The agony and despair was tearing me up inside.  I began having trouble breathing, not sleeping and would cry myself to sleep at night. The stress was almost too much to bear.

I was working at a bank and had made a few close friends. They were very sympathetic, uplifting and encouraging, always willing to listen and lend their support, which I must admit helped me make it through the days as Christmas drew near.  The bank employees passed around the annual Christmas donation envelope which would provide a Christmas for needy families, I took out a $5.00 bill and folded it so that no one could see the small amount of money that I was donating.  I felt embarrassed at such a measly amount, but thought that there must be families going through worse situations than I was facing, families without a home, a warm place to sleep and food on the table.  I quickly shoved the only amount I was able to give into the crisp white envelope and passed it to the person next to me.

Two days left, and still no way to get even a Christmas tree. I spent that long agonizing night awake trying to come up with some ideas to bring Christmas to my young innocent, trusting and excited children. What can I do to give my kids a Christmas? I awoke early and put on a cheery face for my kids.  The dreaded day, Christmas Eve, I have never experienced a more miserable day in my life.  The kid’s excitement was making it hard to fight back my tears. They thought that Santa would surprise them with a tree and the presents this year. I didn't even know what to tell them. How do you tell your sweet, naïve children that there would be no Christmas this year!

In the evening as I was preparing Macaroni & Cheese, which thank goodness the kids loved and thought was a very special Christmas Eve dinner, the doorbell rang. I opened the door and to my utter shock, there stood the entire bank staff, singing Christmas carols.  Every single member of the staff was carrying armfuls of brightly wrapped presents with shiny silver, red and gold bows along with bags full of food, while the men unloaded a Christmas tree.  The women hugged and comforted me as I began to sob uncontrollably.  The kids were squealing with excitement and said, “What’s wrong mommy?  We told you that this was going to be the best Christmas ever”! The presents were flowing out from under the tree and seemed as if they were multiplying every time I looked over.  They were spilling out from under the tree and into the entry way.  The kids were running around the presents, trying to shake them to see if they could figure out what was inside.  I looked over to see my youngest son being tossed in the air, blonde hair flying, cheeks flushed and giggling as he was caught and hugged.  I had been chosen as the needy family this year. My “family” at the bank had made sure that my kids and I would have a wonderful Christmas. As I stood at the bottom of the stairs, looking over the picture in front of me, my only thought was, this is the true meaning of Christmas.  These wonderful people have given much more than material gifts, they have brought the gift of hope, faith and love to a hopeless and desperate mother.

ADVICE:

This was the best Christmas I have ever had and looking back over the years and all the gifts that I've received and the "must have" items, I can honestly say that not one of the material gifts stand out in my mind. The gift of love and compassion from others is something that I will remember for as long as I live.  During this Christmas season I hope my story will encourage others to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate, it is a gift that lasts a life time.  As Christmas time draws near, I want to challenge everyone to give of themselves not monetarily but give the gift of love, kindness and advice to those who are suffering, struggling or in need of encouragement.  You will never know how much your small gifts will touch the lives of others and change their world forever!

1.  Volunteer to serve Christmas dinner to the homeless

2.  Visit an elderly person or convalescent hospital to spend time with someone in need of love.

3.  Organize a food drive in your community to take to a women's shelter / homeless shelter.

4.   Have everyone bring an un-wrapped gift to your annual Christmas party.  Then contact your local fire station or police dept. to drop the gifts off   for them to distribute to local charities.

5.  Invite a friend whose family is far away to spend Christmas at your home.

6.  Invite your family and friends to participate - donate presents/food/Christmas tree to a local family in need of a Christmas Miracle!

7.  Take your entire family to an orphanage to visit and love on children who need it.

8.  Offer words of encouragement, love and advice to a "Minti Family Member" in need.

9.  Share your personal life stories of your triumphs and defeats.  You never know whose heart it will touch.

10.  Step out of your comfort  zone and make a difference in the lives of others.  You will receive the gift of the TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS.

Re: My Christmas Miracle - A True Story

What a wonderful story!  I agree with you on the advice.  Also, the Christmases I loved and remembered the most were the ones when we had the least.  My grandmother was very poor when I was a child and so gifts from her were always very small, but thoughtful.  One Christmas when I was about 8, she bought me a tiny vase with a rose on it that one of her friends had made.  She was so loving and sweet, and it was all she had, God bless her.  I still have that vase and it's one of the only Christmas gifts that I have kept, but remembered so fondly.  I was able to be with her when she died 8 years later, and I only hope my children are as kind as she was!!  Thanks for the gift of your story!!  What a blessing!

Re: My Christmas Miracle - A True Story

I think that your 'family' at the bank were the ones who got the real joy that Christmas!  You get what you give in life; you must have been a fantastic inspiration to your colleagues for them to respond in that way.  What a lovely story, it really restores ones faith in human nature.

Re: My Christmas Miracle - A True Story

That definately is the true meaning of Christmas, and it's such a shame that some people out there can't see that. This brought tears to my eyes and has made me think more about what I can do to help others at that time of year. :)

Hi Tassie,

That happened many years ago when my children were young, but I have never forgotten it.  How could I, it was a miracle for me!!  Things are still tight every year but I too make a point of giving to the less fortunate.  I'm glad that you've received help also...it sure changes you're outlook when you've lived it!

This brought tears to my eyes. What a lovely group of friends/family you have at your work! Every year I make sure to put a present under the 'Kmart Giving Tree' ... even something as small as a Dora backpack which cost me $10 (which I gave this christmas gone) will brighten the eyes of a little girl on Christmas

What a beautiful inspiring story, I don't remember a Christmas that we did not have an extra person at our Christmas dinner that needed some where to go, what the staff did for you was truly remarkable.....  I hope this gives someone out there hope, or others a little inspiration to reach out to someone in need.....  Is always better to give then receive..... Have a wonderful Christmas x

Emmie,

I found it hard to share this story at first out of embarrassment and shame, however I now realize that things happen to us for a reason,  sometimes unfortunately even the bad things.  Your life experiences, hurts, and struggles might be just the thing that someone else needs to hear to change their life.  You NEVER know whose life you will change!!  Merry Christmas!!!!

Luv,

Re: My Christmas Miracle - A True Story

Thanks so much for sharing this! It made me so happy to know that there are still so many people out there that genuinely care for the needs of others! It brings back to mind a christmas when we had NOTHING- Mum had 4 of us - I was 7 my brother 5, my sister 3 and youngest brother 2. Dad had left and paid nothing in child support. Mum was working every hour of the day to try and cover the huge interest rates on the mortgage and after the bills and basic groceries, there was just nothing left over. On Christmas Eve, a few members from the Salvation Army knocked at the door bearing a huge hamper of food ...presents for all of us children and something for Mum. She just burst into tears and hugged me ( all of the others were asleep) . I  didn't really understand the drama at that stage but was ecstatically happy to have presents under the tree! It made such a HUGE difference! We had a wonderful Christmas Day which otherwise would have been pretty sad ( better than some others though!) .  Every year, I donate money and any other items ( clothing, household items etc..)  to the Salvation Army as they bring so much help to those who really need it! I have never forgotten the kindness shown to us when we were in need.

Your story is a testament to how many others have the same situation and often suffer in silence.  Your gift from the Salvation Army has obviously touched your life which in return helps you to give back to others. My hope for this holiday tis that hose who have been touched by the kindness and generosity of others, will give of themselves.  What a difference each one of us can make, one person at a time.  MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Re: My Christmas Miracle - A True Story
Thanks for sharing this hun.  Last year, my family was in big trouble.  I couldn't put christmas on, and felt guilty that I was leaving it upto my presents.  They provided so many gifts for the girls, and told me that it was their right to.  the greatest gift though, was having my husband back for Christmas.  I think it was the most special christmas we have ever had.

This year, we were better organised, and have also put our hands out to those in need of a hug, smile of words of encouragement.  I don't have much to give, but I give what I can freely, as I too, know what it is like to have nothing.

You know, I haven't cried all day, but the tears are flowing now!

Re: My Christmas Miracle - A True Story

Isn't it strange how the hardest Christmas' end up being the most unforgettable.  Love and kindness leave such a  big mark on our hearts.  It is hard sometimes to accept the gifts and generosity of others.  Sometimes the surprise gestures work the best or being told by your parents that, "It's their right", and then the final present (your husband's return) what a joyful Christmas you must have had!!!  Family and friends are wonderful blessings in our lives!

Re: My Christmas Miracle - A True Story
One year a back packer had crossed my path and was going to be alone for Christmas, I told him (of course with out asking my parents) that he should come back to my folks place for Christmas....  He said yes, then he came back to me not long after and said that he won't be able to come because he had met a couple of other back packers that were going to be alone... So of course I told him to invite them too... We gave them a great Aussie Christmas.... One they never forgot and they even returned the favor to me when I went on my travels....

But yes it is always a very good feeling to help those who are less fortunate then ourselves, and even when we find ourselves on the same path it is also a good feeling to spend it with others who are a bit down and out because you can lift each others spirits...

Christmas is a time for love, and caring, giving and sharing, and yes receiving. But the best is giving....

It's amazing what an act of kindness can do for someone!  Good for you, I'm sure your parents were very proud of you also after they got over the initial shock of strangers coming over!LOL.  If everyone can just do a little bit this Christmas, I know that a HUGE difference will be made in peoples life.  Keep up the Christmas Spirit!!!!

Re: My Christmas Miracle - A True Story

This article was so uplifting and heart warming to read & oh so true. It doesn't take much to help someone less fortunate then ourselves. You have given some excellent advice of just how to do that. Your story, restores your faith in others and gives you hope. I think the most precious gift you can give is your time, to the lonely. Even if  everyone just donated 1 item to a charity, boy what a difference that could make.

Cheers Janice

Janice,

It is so true helping others is just a matter of taking time out of your day and bringing some light into someones life.  We all need to truly remember the meaning of Christmas and try to give of ourselves.  My experience has changed my life and I will never forget it.  Everyone whether they realize it or not can give the same gift to others.  Thank you for your comment Janice.  Have a wonderful and blessed Christmas!
