Lessons in Life - Resourcefulness

nell18-3 by nell18-3 Young Parent(December 2007) (rank 2nd)
What image does the word Resourceful bring to your mind ?

I always remember being told of woman who was driving home alone,

her car broke down, the fan belt had snapped!

She quickly whipped off her tights and created a new fan belt that
lasted long enough to get her to a safe place

To me that was being really resourceful

In my world my answer in the same situation would be

To pick up my mobile, dial my dads number and start pleading !!!!!!!

BUT.......  is that how I would want my children to think?

Being resourceful is all about being able to make the most of a situation with the amenities we have at hand
As parents we do this all the time

How many times have our children asked for musical instruments that we can't afford
We don't give up
We decide to put our creativity hat on and make our own
We are able to use things lying around the house that some would consider useless and we are able to re cycle these objects and have a fun session with the children forming our own band.
This is just one example of introducing the ability of being resourceful to our children

What lesson do we teach our children by being resourceful?

We are giving our children an incredible gift when we encourage this skill
We are teaching them that nothing is unattainable if we are creative
We are teaching our children that if along their journey in life they are confronted by a wall, it does not mean they stop, we are teaching them that for every wall that hinders their journey there is always a way of climbing over, digging under or walking around the wall to keep on going

Being resourceful and teaching our children to be resourceful is a very empowering quality
It gives you great confidence in life

Who wouldn't want that in their children ???
