Be Safe with food-Salmonella

natelz1 by natelz1 Talking Back(December 2007) (rank 54th)

Following my last piece of advice, i decided to point out other dangerous bugs in water and food. I have used various sources for information. Everything is in my own words and own format. Please advise me if you see any problems by Minti mail. Most of all i hope you find this information useful.

What is Salmonella?

Salmonella is made up of about 2000 different stereotypes of bacteria, however, only a few of those stereotypes cause the sickness in people. It grows in temperatures of about 7 degrees and 49.5 degrees. Salmonella does in fact grow best between 35 and 38 degrees.

How can you catch Salmonella?

Salmonella is rather easy to catch. It is mostly found in chicken and pigs, is caught from water, and food, environments contaminated with salmonella.

20% of reported salmonella cases end up in hospital.

The Symptoms?

Symptoms usually start from 12hours to 36 hours since coming within contact of Salmonella, but can also start anywhere from 6 hours to  48 hours.Usually you will start off with a fever, then vomiting and diarrhea, you could have abdominal pain, loss of appetite, headaches, and nausea. The more serious the strain of this bug the worse the symptoms are. Some people with a severe strain of Salmonella can sometimes have blood in there stools, and get really dehydrated.

Diagnosis?

Salmonella is confirmed by stool samples.

Cure?

Doctors will generally give antibiotics to elderly and children, and the more severe cases of salmonella. Salmonella can be caught more than once.

In NZ if you catch this bug it is reported to the Ministry of health.

Prevention?

Always wash hands, Never cross contaminate any meat, always cook food properly, Always put raw meat on the lower shelf of the fridge. Always reheat food to above 60 degrees or hotter to kill bugs.

Work or school?

Its recommended to have a full 48 hours off work or school AFTER the last symptom of salmonella, to reduce the risk of infecting others.

Always see your doctor for suspected food poisoning.

Don't forget egg shells. I read that handling the egg shells is more risky in terms of salmonella then handling the egg itself.

Re: Be Safe with food-Salmonella
Great advice and some pastes or spreads that we may use on our bread etc can also contain salmonella as the health department in australia found here a few years back with one of our popular spreads....

You can never be too careful and especially this info comes in handy this time of year...

xxx cazza
