Irritable bowel syndrome

emmie by emmie Talking Back(December 2007) (rank 27th)

I have had irritable bowel syndrome for 2 years as to what i know of , so maybe you have it too without knowing ??? Read on to find out .

What is ibs?

Ibs is a condition to do with an upset bowel , ibs is

very common these days , ibs often arrives with many symptoms , which are most often abdominal pain , bloating , diarea , spasms , cramps and constipation , im not saying that these are all going to be your symptoms but these are the symptoms i have . Ibs can be very unpredictable sometimes you can have just niggling mild symptoms and other times they can be so severe you will have to stop what you are doing .

How to ease ibs?

Keep a well balenced diet , dont eat or drink any of the following foods or drink for the time being .

Fats and oils

Dairy products

Eggs

Citrus fruits

Unpealed fruits

Raw veg

Tea/coffee

Red meat

The way i worked out which of these affected my ibs problem was this

I made up a timetable and on this timetable i wrote down everything i ate and drank i did this for 4 weeks and i had everything i had consumed and i stuck tiny stars where i got my symptoms , but when you see your dr he/she will have to diagnose you with ibs and help you slowly introduce these foods/drink back into your diet

What causes ibs?

Many things can cause ibs such as

Female hormones

Iron tablets

Painkillers

Anti - biotics

Stress

Anxiety

Pelvic inflamitary disease

.

This is what  chams(mum2four) mum has experienced due to ibs in the past

Thanks for the Article,My mother had IBS for many years and as  a result she nearly died ,as her bowel burst and then she got very serious poisoning from her feacies being in her stomach( sorry just cant think of the technical name of it ).She was fine at 10.00 am and then I found out at about 12.00 she could barely move and luckily was able to crawl to the phone to call the ambulance,my Aunty was staying there at the time and was only about 20 m away in her caravan but mum was unable to yell hard enough to get her attention. My aunty knew nothing until the ambulance got there some 15 mins later. Her body had started to shut down, she was hypophermic and very sick.

When I arrived at the hospital the DR's prepared us for the worst as they didnt think she was going to make it through surgery,a very agonizing 3 hr wait, she came through surgery luckily for us as I really dont know how I would have coped with loosing her.She had to have a collostomy (poo bag )for about 12 months and then they were able to rejoin the bowel .It happened so quick as I said at 10.00 she was fine as I spoke to her on the phone, but at 12.00 she was on deaths door. She said she felt like a pop then excruiciating pain. She  does not suffer from IBS as bad as she used to but still has to becareful with her diet. If you ever feel a pop then serious pain make sure you get to a DR straight away as it poisons so quickly.

Thanks for sharing that with us . cham.

I hope this help someone

Re: Irritable bowel syndrome

Hi thankyou for sharing. My mother was diagnosed with IBS 10yrs previously and eventually suffered an abcess from this condition. She was admited for treatment. All clear and she flew to be with my hubby and I for Ruth's birth in 2000. While staying with us the pain returned, and she was admitted to our local hospital where they decided to do the same procedure on Mum, that Cham's Mum had done. Sadly on opening Mum up she was found to be riddled with Bowel Cancer. They did what little they could to ease the pain and flew her home. Nine weeks later she passed away with her family at her side. The Bowel Specialist informed us all that this type of cancer mimics IBS and can lay undetected for up to 10yrs or more, as it probably had done with our Mum. If not diagnosed it will be too late by the time alternative symptoms show. His advice was that anyone suffering IBS, should push for cell biopsy of bowel to rule it out and that GP's should be more concrened at proving IBS by this method. This is not a Cancer that shows with blood in stools, it literally mimics IBS in irregular and unstable stools and abdomimal pain. There are apparently, many forms of bowel cancer, our experience was with just this type, I cant remember the name. Arachno something. It looks like a spiders web and is practically undetectable by u-sound or x-ray. The big hint was that our Mums diet was excellent, but theDocs were not listening. Sorry to push in, on your Article, but thought this may be of interest. Maybe one day emmie I will be able to share the whole sorry tale.

Luv to you and thanks for sharing. Winnie.xxxx

Re: Irritable bowel syndrome

Sounds at the very least down right uncomfortable and at the worst life threatening......i guess the key is good diet and trying to stay healthy.  i hope your condition is improving now you have been diagnosed, Emmie.  thanks for sharing your story.
