Lessons in Life - Tolerance

nell18-3 by nell18-3 Young Parent(December 2007) (rank 1st)
In life we can sometimes set ourselves very high standards

Not only do we expect ourselves to keep these standards

We actually believe that everyone else should too!!!!!!

Unless we have learnt the gift of Tolerance

Tolerance is about accepting everyone is different

And what may be right for us............

may not be achievable for someone else !

As a parent we all know about Tolerance !!!!!!

So many times I have listened to my children and arguing and fighting and hearing myself say I won't tolerate this kind of behaviour
In this form of Tolerance
I am saying I WON'T STAND FOR IT!!!!!

Other times we expect our child to be able to follow the most basic of instructions I get so frustrated at times I can hear myself saying I Can't stand this!!!!!!
In this form of Tolerance
I am actually not showing any Tolerance to the fact that my child gets confused when I tell him more than 3 instructions and he only remembers 1 of them !!!!!
I am the one at great fault for not showing understanding

Tolerating things around is all to do with
What can we live with ????
What can't we live with ????

i can tolerate my child backchatting me occasionally
I don't like it, I correct it but I can tolerate it

I can't tolerate my child being rude
I don't like it, I correct it and I won't put up with it !!!!

We can teach our children to be more tolerant
Tolerance has to be learnt it is not a natural characteristic of Human Nature

Our children need to be tolerant of the world around us
We want our children to value the world
How can we teach them this???
In very simple ways........

Don't let them litter our world, appreciate the world and put your litter in a bin
Show them pictures of how wildlife can be hurt by careless people throwing rubbish on the streets or in the country...............

Any people in the world that are not physically or mentally as strong as our child
Teach them to make allowances for this

Wouldn't it be lovely if everyone on earth decided they would no longer TOLERATE living on a selfish planet

Re: Lessons in Life - Tolerance

I so enjoy reading your advice articles Helen, you speak from the heart and to me, that makes the subject more real. Tolerance is a great trait to be taught to all children and comes in so many forms. But i agree with Cazza, i think  sometimes adults need to   take a page out of the book of learning especially when it comes to Tolerance of others and as we are our childrens teachers....monkey see....monkey do.

Cheers Janice xxxx

Great advice and i think sometimes we need to follow what we teach our children, as our children are our shadows...

Most definitely Cazza
Kids seem to learn more from our actions than our words alone!!!!
