Generosity is not about giving away money
We can be generous with everything in our day to day lives
Its not only the wealthy who can afford to be generous
Generosity is a selfless giving act
But it can be done with time, possessions
and kindness
And those don't cost a thing
How easy is it to teach a child about Generosity ??
Are children born Selfish ??
When we invite friends around to our home to play with our children, do our children willingly share their toys
Do they share some of the toys but hide their favourites
When they go to another childs home, do they expect to share the other childs toys because it would be a natural thing for them to expect from others
Or do they hold back, knowing that the other child may resent them touching their things, because they can identify with those feelings
With generosity there are no elements of meaness
We don't give to see what we can get back for ourselves
Generosity is the ability to share anything you have with others in a non selfish act
There are some wonderful examples of Generosity existing on this site
These are the people, who have a kind word for everyone, an encouragement for everyone and the time for everyone and their problems
They are able to do this because they have a generous spirit and genuinely want to encourage the rest of us
The reason we can call this acts of Generosity is because these same people take nothing away for their benefit from their acts of kindness
We can encourage our children to be generous by sharing everything
From the toys they love
to a bag of sweets someone gives them
Sharing sweets in my home can sometimes be a case of one child asking for a sweet from the others bag but being refused as the 2nd child doesn't like the sweets in his brothers bag !!!!! typical boys !!!!!
However all I can do as their parent in this situation is to point out that they should be happy to pass along their sweets because the act of sharing itself is the act that brings them the greatest satisfaction and pleasure, not letting your brother have one of your least favourite sweets so you can barter for one of the most favourites of his !!!!!!!!!!
If we encourage our children to be givers with no rewards
We are giving them a great gift of knowing Generosity for themselves
