Lessons in Life - Ambition

nell18-3 by nell18-3 Young Parent(December 2007) (rank 2nd)
Ambition can so often be seen as a bad trait in people

The world at large sees Ambitious people as  selfish and mean spirited

Ambition conjures up the image of someone prepared to walk over others to get their goals

But ambition is a great
gift to encourage our child in positive thinking

Ambition is something we can work for

Its the dream that keeps us all going

How many of us grew up longing to be an Air Hostess or  an Astronaut  or and Aircraft Pilot ?????
if you know what I am talking about
How many of you achieved your childhood ambition???
Probably not many of us did !!!!!
But does that make those same ambitions a waste of our energy
Or a great childhood memory of motivation

Ambitions do NOT have to be the kind of thing that is out of reach for most of us
My eldest talked for years about how one day he would love to own his own Newsagents !!!!!
Where he got that from I do not know
But it was an ambition of his all the same, and to be honest, for him it may still be achievable

I reached my ambition too!!!!!
My parents laugh even now as all I ever wanted to be was a Mother
I had no big dreams of glamorous jobs, all I wanted was my own children

Its a fantastic feeling to look back and now you have achieved your ambition

However how would it feel if in years to come our child looked back over their life and their choices, knowing they reached their ambitions too
but, on looking back, they also see the price !!!!
How it cost not only them as their ambitions became their whole reason for living
But also how it cost others they had to hurt or use or walk over to reach their ambitions
Thats when Ambitious turns into its dark side
When Ruthlessness is also a part of the equation

We must encourage our children to have ambitions
But also to respect the ambitions of others too
To accept that to reach their goals, they must always look for the way which doesn't hurt anyone else

Well said.........ambitions don't have to be huge and all inspiring, it can be something so simple and yet makes us so happy.

Re: Lessons in Life - Ambition
Ambition is good, and so is dreaming. After all, if people didn't have ambition or dreams, we wouldn't have things we rely on today such as telephones, aeroplanes and cars!

I think it's only when people use their ambition or dreams and push people out of the way instead of using their ambitions and dreams to help people on their way... like manipulation and stuff. Or if their ambition is to murder 10 people at school to become a 'hero' or 'martyr' or whatever they are thinking then those dreams are obviously bad.
