some accidents can be prevented

anniebabe by anniebabe Talking(December 2007) (rank 82nd)

We as parents need to be more responsible

We need to have some guidelines in place especially when we have friends and family looking after our cherished children. It is up to us to remind people of some of the dangers and to eliminate things that can be a potential dander to our children.

I cannot emphasize enough how important this can be. People generally do not drive their families around without  strapping them in safely or drink and drive. the list is endless to what extent we all go through to protect our families.

Then we become complacent when things really do matter. We dont see the potential danger of the family pet. Most of the time the dog is not  "aggresive" they only do things that come naturally to them . THAT IS THEY PLAY AND THEY ATTACK. it is us humans that forget all this. We need to be educated fast and quick.

I have read too much in the media recently . The head of the racv (road service of victoria) quoted something like over 1000 calls where incidents of children having been locked up in the car "by mistake" this year . i cant remember offhand but  the figure was way up from the same time last year .

He stated this wasnt good enough. HOW RIGHT !!!

It isnt up to society or the government . We have to stop blaming the world. We need to  take a step back. we need to take a few long hard breaths when life is tough.

WE NEED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY  WE NEED TO EDUCATE OURSELVES.

yes accidents are "ACCIDENTS"  some cannot be avoided. But THE BOTTOM LINE HERE IS THAT A LOT CAN . Negligence can be avoided. NEGLIGENCE has a lot of meanings. the one and foremost is 'EDUCATING OURSELVES OF THE DANGERS" . No excuses time is not a factor . there are a lot of negative things that us humans spend our time on. Its about time we spent some positive time.

I know this is a long "time process before results take effect" but just like we have stranger danger and fire in the house taught in schools then maybe our children should be taught in schools about things like when they grow up 'HOW TO BE RESPONSIBLE PARENTS'

PLEASE NO PERSONAL ATTACKS ON THIS ARTICLE

THIS IS JUST PLAIN CONSTRUCTIVE  ADVICE

i am not pointing the finger here im just saying we do need to wake up with ourselves and not be complacent

CHILDREN NEED OUR PROTECTION AS PARENTS  THIS IS VITAL

SO PLEASE PLEASE PUT SOME GUIDELINES IN PLACE  . even if it means that you have a plan made out to family and friends. why is it we have a plan if there is a fire in the house? i am not talking about people walking around in fear BUT AWARENESS  if isound harsh  REMEMBER IT IS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY

Re: some accidents can be prevented

yeah, i just read a mother's account how instinct helped save her daughter's life from drowning. it was in either take 5 or thats life (i am currently so behind that i have 3 issues of each that i am reading in no particular order)

the little toddler had wanted to go outside aand the mother had only turned her  back for an instant. instint made her look at the pool (i think it was only a wading pool) and found the child face down) very lucky circumstances helped save the baby. the mother's father and brother were in the front yard working on the car or something. they performed cpr while an ambulance was rung  and the mother with baby in arms with her sister drove to meet the ambulance

the mother says the toddler must have sqeezed through this small gap to get to the pool. the end result was great news as the toddler not only survived but  didnt suffer any brain damage

being a single mum and her only child she says she wouldnt have known how  to cope if she hadnt pulled through

it could well have been a different situation and the mother on her own accord says how now she wll be more cautious

ilmunchkin as you say 'accidents' are still happening' some and i do stress some can be avoided and even if one life can be saved it is certainly worth it

cheers annie .

Re: some accidents can be prevented
Hi Annie

There have been so many terrible 'accidents' involving young children lately... Perhaps I am more attuned to it now that I am a parent, or maybe it is the 'thing' for the media to be focusing on at the moment.  Either way, they all seem to similar - nobody is learning from the mistakes of other's.

We need to be alert and take all the precautions we can to ensure the safety of any children in our care.  We also need to make sure that any person who cares for our children is 100% in agreement with us, and understands what that entails.  We also need to be aware of any new environment that we take our children too and investigate all areas that may be of concern, and never take anything for granted.  Each child only has one life - it is up to us to ensure that it is the happiest, healthiest, longest life it can be.

Hi there,

What a GREAT article you have written and so very true . . . This article serves as a GREAT reminder to us all. No one can be too careful when it comes to protecting our kids.

I have a list that goes with my kids when they are staying over at relatives. some find it offensive but that is not my intent, it is just my way of making sure that they know what my kids are used to and what they aren't.

Cheers Kellz

too right.   janice . Children need us more than ever. we should do the right thing by them. i remember years ago when a baby survived an earthquake. the mother died saving her baby. She had thoughtfully had put herself over the baby in the hope the baby would survive. The mother didnt survive but that selfless act saved the baby!

Re: some accidents can be prevented
I agree with the motto that cazza said! This article is so true, and it often frightens me of what could happen when people babysit my daughter..... even at daycare....i think some of that is just paranoid mums syndrome though lol.
Hopefully people will read this article and take it seriously as the rest of us have!
Thanks for sharing with us!
Cheers

Great advice.  Seems I wasn't the only one thinking on the same lines.  Protecting children, ultimately, is a parents responsibility.  We have to ensure their safety and prevent tragedies from happening.  A little common sense when parenting goes a long way.  So does knowing what thought process your child has at each age.  A child under the age of 12 often is in their own world, which makes simple things like crossing the road really dangerous.

Education is the key.

Love what you put Cazza, it is soo true that parents should be licensed first! lol.

Re: some accidents can be prevented
Great advice and i love the part where u say that the education sysytem should have a part in the school curriculam where teachers can teach our next generation or us how to be responsible parents..

I love my dads motto, you can get a licence to drive, but there should be a licence to be a parent..

No parent is perfect, and same as kids, but it is our role to love, protect and mae sure there is no harm to our chidren......

xxxx cazza
