Why do babies cry?

mcm by mcm Young Parent(July 2006) (rank 4th)

Babies depend on their mother (or carer) entirely as newborns. When they cry it is because they have a need that must be met. A newborn has a sense of urgency in his cry. In the womb food is directed from mother to baby at a steady rate, through the

umbilical cord. When he comes into the world he is confronted with hunger, cold and discomfort that he has never felt before.

Why do babies cry? Here is a simple checklist which a new parent could use to get to the cause of the crying. Is he....

  • hungry?
  • wet or have a dirty nappy?
  • tired?
  • in need of comfort?
  • too cold or overheated?
  • in pain?

Though it may feel like it, babies don't just cry to annoy us as parents. If you feel like the crying is getting too much, put baby down in a safe place eg. his cot and go outside for a few minutes and take a few breaths. I know it has helped me, when I feel like the crying is just too much and I can't think. It is difficult to calm a baby when you feel stressed yourself.

Re: Why do babies cry?

I agree babies cry for a reason. I found out why my newborn was crying when I tried the dunstan baby language dvd. A girlfriend told me about it... and it made our life so much easier

Helps
It does help to do what you did, by putting your baby into a safe place and go elsewhere for about 5 minutes to calm down etc. I've done it many times before.

Take a time-out.

I agree with you about leaving baby in his crib and just stepping out for a few minutes when you can no longer take it. I've had my moments when my son's crying was just too much and my ears were constantly ringing. When I am about to reach my breaking point, I place him in the crib and just lock myself in the bathroom. It's a miracle what 5 minutes can do!

I Agree!!!
That's good. I agree. I was told the exact same thing when my daughter was born. And I was reading the book that I got, and it says the same. Expecially, if you can't handle it right now, put the baby in the crib/cot and step outside of the door until you are ready. And IT WILL NOT hurt the baby. You need to calm down before you pick up the baby again. It work's.. trust me..
