Why do babies cry? |

Babies depend on their mother (or carer) entirely as newborns. When they cry it is because they have a need that must be met. A newborn has a sense of urgency in his cry. In the womb food is directed from mother to baby at a steady rate, through the
umbilical cord. When he comes into the world he is confronted with hunger, cold and discomfort that he has never felt before.
Why do babies cry? Here is a simple checklist which a new parent could use to get to the cause of the crying. Is he....
- hungry?
- wet or have a dirty nappy?
- tired?
- in need of comfort?
- too cold or overheated?
- in pain?
Though it may feel like it, babies don't just cry to annoy us as parents. If you feel like the crying is getting too much, put baby down in a safe place eg. his cot and go outside for a few minutes and take a few breaths. I know it has helped me, when I feel like the crying is just too much and I can't think. It is difficult to calm a baby when you feel stressed yourself.
