New Year's resolutions: Just a waste of time?

Kristen by Kristen Young Parent(December 2007) (rank 160th)

It's now looming overhead.  In a few hours, it will be New Year's Eve.  We will sit around the table and inevitably someone will mention New Year's resolutions.  Promises will be made and goals will be set.  I'll admit that in the last 10 years, I have scoffed

at New Year's resolutions.  To me it seemed silly to pick one day out of the year to start making all the changes you need to make.  I thought it was crazy and a waste of time.  But this year I am going to embrace New Year's resolutions because there are things in my life that I would like to have happen.  And these are the goals in MAKING my New Year's resolutions that are going to help me keep them.

  • Keep it simple.  If your resolution is an elaborate one, you may have difficulty even remembering WHAT is was that you wanted to do.
  • Make your list short.  It's better to have succeeded in a few important things than to feel overwhelmed and not have the energy to do ANYTHING.
  • Be realistic.  Trying to drop 6 dress sizes in 2008 is a difficult task for even the most dedicated person.  Maybe if you just lose 1 size you will look and feel better.

No one wants to fail.  For me, that usually happens around January 4th.  LOL.  I think these things will help me succeed.  What are your New Year's resolutions?

Re: New Year's resolutions: Just a waste of time?

Hi Kristen. Yes the idea of New Years resolutions can be a bit silly. But I guess it is a good way to start the year afresh with new goals & changes in mind. I agree, keeping your goals realisitc and simple definitely helps in making them achievable! One of my goals is to go to bed earlier so I can utilise the early morning more efficiently. Have I started on it yet, NO, lol! All the best in 2008, Ky *;-)

Re: New Year's resolutions: Just a waste of time?

I must admit, I've always scoffed a bit at New Year Resolutions. Mainly I do this because I have never heard someone say on December 31 'yep, reached my new year goal for this year'.

I think that goal setting is important and I do a lot of it, but I think many, many people have forgotten about their new year resolutions by January 31, let alone December 31!

So my challenge to people - make your New Year Resolutions more than just party conversation. I like your advice about goal setting. I would encourage goals to be specifc and to have a plan.

For example

- "I want to lose weight" might be "I want to lose two kilos a month this year, and I will do so by following ***** diet and walking the kids to school"

- "I want to get out of debt" might be "I will draw up a budget, limit my spending, pay and extra $100 off the credit card every month instead of buying new clothes and upgrade the mortgage repayments by $80 a fortnight to build up some savings" - very specific.

- "I will spend more time with the kids" might be "Every Tuesday afternoon after school we will go down to the park as a family"

So I challenge you - make 2008 your goal keeping year, not just another goal setting and forgetting year. Come on, it's the 2nd of January already - only 354 days to go until you can say you've reached you 2008 goal!

Re: New Year's resolutions: Just a waste of time?
I'm with you. I think it is great to set goals for yourself but not too unrealistic. We don't want to stand still, and we all want to make our life better so I definately don't think they are a waste of time, in fact I think we should write it down and set a plan. Good luck to everyone with resolutions, I say. I want to increase my skills so I intend to get my hands on a T.A.F.E booklet and decide a course. Maybe there is a site on the net. Better get to it. lol

writing it down helps you stick to your goal. I'm gonna do that too. Thanks for the great idea.

Excellent advice. especially where you said, don't overwhelm your self, and only make a short list. Well said.

Re: New Year's resolutions: Just a waste of time?
i love new year's resolutions, but think of them in terms of a mondo beyondo list of things i'd like to see happen this year more than actual goals.  but i like the practice all the same.  good article.

treating it like a mondo beyondo list is a great way to look at it. Less pressure.

Re: New Year's resolutions: Just a waste of time?
I don't have any new years resolutions, never really have. Not because i "fail" at keeping them, but because i just don't see the point in making it a specific day to change, as you have to change when you are ready.
Good advice though.
Cheers

Re: New Year's resolutions: Just a waste of time?
or you could just be like me and not make any!  LOL  But perhaps it's time to try it though. Maybe just dropping 1 dress size? That would be nice...

what an inspiration! We need to all worry less about what others say. That's on my list for 2008 too.
