What about toys?

mcm by mcm Young Parent(July 2006) (rank 4th)

From blocks to bicycles, every toy has something to teach a child. Though, some toys represent better play value than others. A simple home made toy often has more appeal to a young child than a much more expensive sophisticated toy.

Children learn about the world around them through experience and practice. A baby will mouth something to feel its texture, a toddler will climb, and an older child will experiment. Toys help children develop adult skills. Toys that give a child opportunity for practicing new skills will keep him or her interested longer.

Having three young children you may be able to imagine the amount of toys in our house. We would have more but I have a tendency of having a clear out every so often as not to go crazy and be over run with an excess of toys. These days kids are given toys on what seems a weekly or even daily basis. I don't have to buy toys any more. Friends and family spoil them with toys. But because I still want to spoil my kids particularly at Christmas and on birthdays I now buy good quality wooden toys. These are natural and last longer. They still hurt when you stand on them! but they don't break so easily. I like the idea that my grandkids could play with these same toys.

Before buying a toy ask yourself -

  • Can I make it easily myself?
  • Is it essential?
  • Is it  multi faceted - will it serve more than the one purpose?
  • Have I the room to store it? (that is the breaker for me!)

Choosing age appropriate toys is important. If it helps with their development then it has served its purpose. Safety should also be a concern. Small objects than can be swallowed are not recommended for children under 3. Sharp objects can also cause injury. Children need toys for learning but i think we can take care in what we give them. I know with my children they love the latest toys they see advertised on television. My girl wants a doodle bear. I say yes, for Christmas, as I know how much she loves art and that makes it worthwile. My boy loves trains and is a great fan of Thomas the tank engine. I buy the wooden ones as they last longer. As yet my baby doesn't ask for toys!. He has many baby toys that friends and family have given him. He loves to be able to put them in his mouth, teething toys are definitely a must for now.

Toys are great learning tools. As parents we guide our children in their playing by what toys they have. I see in my children their personalities develop when they are playing with their favourite toys. I can see what they want to be. And it makes me smile.

"Free fun"

My boys have a lot more fun with an empty box of nappies or plastic containers than expensive toys. They love playing "pretend" with things they know I use myself...Aidan pretends to have a pizza shop and comes to take our telephone order (he has our old telephone on his desk) then goes to his "shop" and brings back a piece of cardboard (our pizza!) I guess they get attached emotionally to object they see you use ~ I gave then boxes, a set of wooden salt and pepper, empty spice containers and a few wooden ustesils. They seem to be happier with those than with toys bought from the shop.

Toys...
Brooke  loves her barbies. Alex loves cars, trucks, anything with wheels.  Braden well he is pretty happy with anything at this point. I took down the ball tent and he just loves it. LOL I wish I had some of the toys that they have now a days.

TOYS....

Yep some toys are played with for a day.... Some are played with for weeks....

My sons favorite toys right now are his sisters barbie car, and his sister old doll pram....  He just loves them and Camille was kind enough to hand them over to him to keep. I just asked if he could borrow the car as he was showing intrest in it, and she said he can have it, he sits with it opens the door plays with the steering whell and says rooon rooon.  He has played with it for weeks now and forgotten most of his others... Used toys are great if they only play a day. My sister in-law has passed most of her kids toys to us.  So I have not had to buy any either...

used toys

when my kids were smaller i never needed to buy toy's as relitives did this for us, but even now i never buy new toy's unless it is something in particular, as i've realized what a waste of money it is, i only buy from the seconhand store, i get blocks, barbies you name it for not even close to new prices, i agree that toys are great for childrens learning ready for adult life, my children love to play shops and mums and dads and my youngest loves to build things with blocks, i've heard people say in the past  that children don't need toys they should learn to ocupy themselves, "yeh! with what i say, twiddle there thumbs i guess"i've even heard from a friend who does in home care with children that there are kids out there who have never coloured a pitchure and have no clue how to play, she has actually had to teach them what to do and bring in her own toys as they have none of there own, she said the smiles on there faces when they realized they could make something and express themselves through play was heart warming

Thanks!

My son likes the toys with sounds and buzzers, but continually goes back to his wooden blocks, he never seems to get sick of them!!

Love Toys
Toys.. hmm who doesn't love toys. Yes, we always try to buy toys that stimulate the child either emotionally or physically and yes of couse its fun for them to play with. We also buy toys that could last long, specially when we planned to have another kid. My son love Lego so much. Wooden toys are very good as well, since they are last very very long.

Good Advice
I agree as well.  We need to think before we buy.  Toys with buzzers and lights hold there interest for a little while, but they always seem more interested in the things that allow for open ended play.

Blocks

You're right. A toy that allows a child to use his/her imagination is better. Blocks for example is great, and so is legos and the like. So before grabbing toys, it's important to do a little bit of thinking.

Fisher Price toys too are great!!
That's excellent. I agree. I always supervise my daughter when she's playing with her toys. Not so much her teddy bear(which she loves alot) but her blocks(peak-a-boos, and roll-a-rounds) all made by fisher price. They are excellent toy's and i also do reccommend them to parents. She love's them and loves throwing them too, lol.
