What about toys? |

From blocks to bicycles, every toy has something to teach a child. Though, some toys represent better play value than others. A simple home made toy often has more appeal to a young child than a much more expensive sophisticated toy.
Children learn about the world around them through
experience and practice. A baby will mouth something to feel its texture, a toddler will climb, and an older child will experiment. Toys help children develop adult skills. Toys that give a child opportunity for practicing new skills will keep him or her interested longer.
Having three young children you may be able to imagine the amount of toys in our house. We would have more but I have a tendency of having a clear out every so often as not to go crazy and be over run with an excess of toys. These days kids are given toys on what seems a weekly or even daily basis. I don't have to buy toys any more. Friends and family spoil them with toys. But because I still want to spoil my kids particularly at Christmas and on birthdays I now buy good quality wooden toys. These are natural and last longer. They still hurt when you stand on them! but they don't break so easily. I like the idea that my grandkids could play with these same toys.
Before buying a toy ask yourself -
- Can I make it easily myself?
- Is it essential?
- Is it multi faceted - will it serve more than the one purpose?
- Have I the room to store it? (that is the breaker for me!)
Choosing age appropriate toys is important. If it helps with their development then it has served its purpose. Safety should also be a concern. Small objects than can be swallowed are not recommended for children under 3. Sharp objects can also cause injury. Children need toys for learning but i think we can take care in what we give them. I know with my children they love the latest toys they see advertised on television. My girl wants a doodle bear. I say yes, for Christmas, as I know how much she loves art and that makes it worthwile. My boy loves trains and is a great fan of Thomas the tank engine. I buy the wooden ones as they last longer. As yet my baby doesn't ask for toys!. He has many baby toys that friends and family have given him. He loves to be able to put them in his mouth, teething toys are definitely a must for now.
Toys are great learning tools. As parents we guide our children in their playing by what toys they have. I see in my children their personalities develop when they are playing with their favourite toys. I can see what they want to be. And it makes me smile.
