Giving medicine to kids

Amerlinwinga by Amerlinwinga Talking(January 2008) (rank 176th)

There is one thing i have learnt over the last month is giving you child medicine isnt fun. I have 2 kids that are sick at the same time but one takes medicine really easy and the other is a screamer and a big sook.

There are a few

way to give your child medicine and that is:

*Medicine  dropper

*Medicine cup

*Nipple / end of a bottle (for babies)

*Syringe

*Teaspoons / spoons

*Capsules

*suppositories

*Chewable tablets

We all know how to use these methods or most anyway. Suppositories is one that i would have trouble with and dont wish to do unless i really have too.

I found playing games helped my kids to take there medicine and making it fun. But i do have a child that refuses to take anything so im reduced to being cruel to be kind. The easiest way i can get my child to have her medicine is to get the syringe full and ready and hold her down block her nose and squirt it into her mouth.  It sound really bad but this is the only way i could do it.

The Doctor told me to do this and i looked at him really strange "like is he being serious?" But he was,  he says if they cant breath the have to use there mouth and they have to swallow. I tried it and it worked well. The screaming is still there but she doesnt seem to have the ability to spit it out.

The other way is to mix it with a drink they arent normally allowed to have like soft drink, cordial ect. Its something they like and want all the time so the thought of having it is great to them. I have put 8mls of medicine to 20mls of drink and they drink it really quick bec they think its great. This works 90% of the time for my child, if im mixing with panadol its ok but sometimes when im mixing it with pennicillin they can still taste it.

Jelly is another way but i find that really messy and lose alot as my child wants to feed her self and she will miss her mouth more times than actually getting in her mouth lol. When they are younger and you are still feeding it can work quite well!

These are the things that i have been recomended to do and tried! I hope this might help new mums ect as no one had ever told me when i first had my children.

Thanks for reading Tee

Re: Giving medicine to kids

Oh I know how you feel........Luke hates taking most medicines and I too have to hold him close to me and squirt the medicine in with a syringe.......it's not nice but he sure gets lots of cuddles afterwards and tell him I'm so proud of him. Hopefully he'll get better as he gets older...

Hope your girls are ok

Lots of love to you

Re: Giving medicine to kids

Great article, thanks. And the holding the nose thing - you can't taste anything if you hold your nose. Don't believe me? Have someone cut up a slice of apple and a slice of potato (no skin on either.) Hold your nose, close your eyes and have someone put a slice in your mouth - you won't be able to determine if it's apple or potato! Works with anything with similar textures, so the texture dosen't give it away.

It works because most of the taste sensors are in your nose, not your toungue. (The apple/ potato trick is a good party game, by the way!) I'm lucky in that my kids will swallow medicine if they hold their nose, haven't had the spitting out issue though.

Thanks for a very popular article!

Re: Giving medicine to kids

Yes, we have to use the pin down & syringe method with DD2, but I forgot to hold her nose - gonna try that, as she can spit it out otherwise - my glasses can get pretty splattered! I was advised to squirt it into her cheek to stop from choking her, tho I know others that aim for the throat successfully.

DD1 was much easier with medicines, tho I got fluclox (pennicillin) into her only by adding paracetamol (which she loves). Luckily that worked a treat as she had 3 courses of it in quick succession for a serious staph infection which could have hospitalised her. At the same time my friend's son was puking fluclox back up to get it out of his body - so lucky not to have one like that!

I like the drink & jelly ideas - may have to resort to those!

Re: Giving medicine to kids

Some very helpful tips in this advice, on how to give children medicine. I still remember giving medicine to my children, holding them on my lap, with one hand behind  my back and holding the other.....it use to upset me doing it as much as it upset them, taking it. Thanks for sharing  this, with us.

Cheers Janice

Re: Giving medicine to kids
great advice there hun! when i was sick in hospital growing up they tried everything to get me to take my medicine, i started off easy then decided no more! and made life very hard for my docs nurses and my mum
the worst one they did was put my tablets in vanilla icecream, i used to luv the stuff but after they started doing that every day i still cannot eat it to this day! i could always taste the tablets and they would make me eat the whole bowl tasting like tablets yuuuck!.

the syringe i think is the best and quickest way... get it over with and a cuddle after will make it better

Re: Giving medicine to kids
Hi honey,

Thanks for sharing these idea's with us all . .  Giving medication can be a real handful with some kids . .  Sumara has been on tablets since she was 3 weeks old and these can't be chewed so we have become very invent-full.

I remember when Sam was really young, she hated medicine of any type which was a problem considering she had bad asthma. In the end a nurse showed us how to pin her down and administer her medicine. I hated doing it but she needed her medicine . .

Cheers Kellz

Re: Giving medicine to kids
Great advice and we had difficulties with chloe until we had her older brother play along with it and she would if she could drink it all the time..

I think with some children they are so head strong they just refuse as it makes them feel better to see us in distress as all we want is for them to get well
