TRIBES : an agreement my kids school has with their children

Anonymous Author (January 2008)
At our school we are firm believers in a child is responsible for their actions and the school found this agreement that all the children have to sign and agree and adhere to.

TRIBES:

there are 5 rules the children have to adhere to. they are: Attentive
Listening, Mutual Respect, Appreciations- no put downs, The Right To Pass and Personal Best Responsibilities
. We as the parents it is our duty to carry this out in our household to get the children to do these.

  • MUTUAL RESPECT: Show respect for and welcome others - no matter what their uniqueness. Respect each other's property. Respect individual skills, tallents and contributions. Respect individuals privacy ( no rumours or gossip)
  • ATTENTIVE LISTENING: Pay attention and look at the person who is speaking. Know when and how to take turns speaking in a group. Paraphrase what people have said to let them know they have been heard. Use appropriate body language in response to the speaker, like nodding and smiling.
  • APPRECIATION / NO PUT DOWNS:Avoid put-down remarks and actions. Compliment, appreciate and recognize each other's gifts.
  • THE RIGHT TO PASS: Choose how much we will share about ourselves in a group activity - still remain apart of the group.
  • PERSONAL BEST RESPONSIBILITIES: Always striving to do the very best of your ability at all times in every situation. Taking ownership over your actions.

The children are taught this from Kindy and their school reports are based on the Tribes agreement as well.

We have followed the Tribes agreement for the last 2 years and have found a huge difference in Alex's behaviour. As well as giving him a chance to talk and take responsibility of his own actions. I personally think this is a great idea and should be implimented in most schools.

Hi Liz,

Sounds like a great plan to have school . ..
Tas is still in the Dark Ages with the "stop I don't like what you are doing!" The problem here is that by the time a child spits this mouthful out the damage is already done and most kids just seem to laugh it off. In a lot of ways I think schools shirk the responsibility in the playground by instilling a lot of these programs. What ever happened to duty teachers??

Cheers Kellz

What happens if they don't adhere to the agreement?

Sounds great and sounds better then our system of the  3 Part message,(stop, dont like and if you do it again i tell the teacher) and also 50 steps away from a  fight....   and also have be Safe, be a learner, be friendly and show respect... With all those mentioned we dont have signed agreements and i feel we should.,  as a lot dont follow the school rules.....
