Lie on the floor

hrs2004 by hrs2004 Young Parent(July 2006) (rank 8th)

I have two children - a daughter of 2 1/4 and a son of 8 months. So I rush around, try to keep the house tidy (generally failing dismally), the washing machine running and food in the fridge. When I'm not doing that, I'm feeding them or changing nappies or

hoping they will sleep for just a little while so I can catch up with paperwork. Yesterday I didn't. I laid on the floor by my daughter and closed my eyes. First she was slightly stumped, then she did the inevitable. She came over and climbed on me. And this was with a huge grin on her face. We cuddled, she climbed, I tickled her and we generally shared a lovely few minutes until she decided she had had enough. And I have to say that it was one of the nicest few minutes I have spent for a while.

In the days where we seem to never have enough time and too much to do in it, remember to get down to the level of your children and make yourself vulnerable. They are down there with a fairly daunting view of the world and my daughter's face showed me how much she appreciated being the one in control for a change. I think I am going to make this something we do at least a few times a week. My son is just learning to get around on the floor and is never happier when he can get up on his feet and see things from a different perspective. It always does us good to view things a different way, so I say "Lay down!" (just try not to fall asleep because you have been woken up three times last night...)

Floor time
My son loves floor time... Although I get a little tired of the trampoline game.. I am the trampoline.. But he loves it when I sit on the floor, he will bring me a book and sit in my lap and turn the pages for me... Or he will run circles around me... If I lie down that is when I become the trampoline.. No danger of falling asleep then...

Their World is a Lot of Fun
When we extended our castle (home) we made a point of putting carpet in the lounge area over polished floor boards so we could have a wrestle on the floor every night. Still happens now at 7pm most nights after dinner.

Perspective
Loved this...only in the past few weeks have I realized how little time I've spent looking at things through my children's eyes lately.  The newfound awareness has shifted things dramatically for me, though...

Love it!

I have always loved doing this. Try it outside aswell. It is amazing what you will discover. Bugs and other curious things in the earth. And if you let your imagination go free (the kids already instinctively know how), the shapes you can make in the clouds tell a wonderous tale. I always felt a bit guilty for allowing the dust on the architraves build up or the rangehood to get a bit grimy. No longer!! How wonderful to be a parent!

Use our inner child feeling
It's good to have fun with your child(ren) on their level. sometime we need to put away our grown up routines and use our inner child feeling to have fun with our kid(s). I use to put kids music on (specially from Playschool. It's kids program that show at ABC Kids). We sit or lay down on the floor and do what my kids do. And it is a lot safer to play on the floor (specially with young one).

Fun on the floor.

I agree. Kids love this! I have actually been doing this with my son on the a daily basis.  He loves it when I get on all fours and climb on me.  Sometimes when my husband and I are watching TV, I just go ahead and sit on the floor. Matthew comes by and stands behind me to play peek-a-boo.  Sometimes it can make a difference between my husband and I being able to watch the whole program in peace and having to pause every 10 minutes .

Scary otherwise
Its much more fun to be on the floor with your kids...you get an all new perspective on things. And, if you're baby is shy of strangers, and they're cool with getting on the floor, that's how they should meet. Otherwise it could be super intimidating for your baby.
