Mirena IUD

lilysmom by lilysmom Talking Back(January 2008) (rank 71st)

Hi everyone!

Just a quick little bit of advice for anyone who's considering getting a Mirena IUD.

Up until a couple months ago, I was totally in love with my IUD (lol I'm silly I know). No periods. Super low chance of getting pregnant. Sounds too good to

be true! Well... turns out it's more of a double edged sword than I had counted on.

Just the other day, while I was in the washroom at work, I mentioned to one of my co-workers that my breasts were killing me, (no, not preggers!) she asked me if I had a Mirena. Of course I said yes. Then she asked if my back was hurting. Again, yes, sometimes so bad that I have trouble getting out of bed in the morning. Then she asked about depression. Another big yes on that one. She advised me to check out some forums and newsgroups on Mirena.

Man! On top of the more obvious side-effects, there are alot of odd ones that are really starting to be more common place. Over-eating, weight gain, back pain, depression and anxiety... the list goes on!

Now, I'm not at all against Mirena, and I still am on the fence as to what I'm going to do about the one that I have, I'm still making my pro/con list.

I just wanted all of you to know. Please, on top of the information that the doctor gives you about whatever your birth control choices may be, do a little more research than I did. Talk to people that have made the same choice. Go into forums and newsgroups (and Minti, of course!). Be as informed as you can possibly be. Weigh all your options. Back pain vs pregnancy is the big one for me at the moment! lol

Re: Mirena IUD

My Dr yesterday wanted me to have it, but the thought of having a foreign body in there left me cold, having been thru 3 miscarriages it just doesn't sit well. I have suffered with depression and anxiety, I have weight issues and sciatic pain, this form of birth control is definately not for me!!!! Thanks for the advice, I'm glad I read this!

That's interesting. I've spoken to ONLY one other person who feels as you do. That person tends to have very comfortable and easy pregnancies (symptom-free), as well. Is that the case with you?

Everyone else that I've spoken to (and I'm quite verbal on this subject) has had pain and or huge cysts as a result of their Mirena, both of which discontinued after removal.

Re: Mirena IUD

I had an horrific pregnancy. I didn't have morning sickness, but I developed life threatening hypertension and my son had to be delivered early. I have migraines too. They have been no worse. I have gotten some persistant ovarian cysts but this is normal for me. I lost my right ovary to cysts year ago, well before the Mirena. I get some tiredness, but nothing I can't live with. I am actually hyper-reactive to hromonal treatments that's why I tried the Mirena. The all the varieties of the pill make me even more seriously depressed, create monster migraines and make my blood pressure soar.

The relief of my depressive symptoms has been amazing and life changing. I was so incapacitated by them that for half the month I was completely incapable of functioning properly. The Mirena has enabled me to go back and finish high school and got to university, something that would have been impossible otherwise.

I wonder whether it is the case of a vocal minority. I wonder whether those people who are having bad side effects are the only ones speaking up so it is being presumed that it is all bad; that the people like me are staying quiet because there is nothing to make a fuss about for them.

Re: Mirena IUD

First off, congrats and good for you on overcoming a difficult situation!

The entire point of me writing the article wasn't to bash Mirena. I've still got mine, still dealing with the problems it brings me, and still quite happy that I haven't fallen pregnant.

Alot of the comments about Mirena on this article seem very negative, and you're right, it very well could just be the vocal minority.

I hope that by reading this article, people will open their eyes a little, do a bit of their own research, ask questions of their doctors, and not just go blindly with whatever form of birth control their doctor hands out. Yes they are the proffessional, but we need to take responsibility for our own reproductive health.

Again, I'm glad that your experience differs from alot of the ones here in the comments section, and hopefully more people will be encouraged to share their positivity after reading about your situation. It's good to have as much information as possible when making a decision about birth control.

My intent was in no way to deter people from getting a Mirena.

Thank you for your comment!

xx. Charity

Re: Mirena IUD

I got my Mirena out today (the pelvic pain had been so bad the last 3 days that I would feel it shoot down my legs as I walked). As I got up to walk out of the Doctor's office, I noticed that it was all gone. I had also experienced back pain throughout my 13 months with the Mirena (which had become much worse in the last 2 weeks), and it vanished after removal as well. My symptoms were: back ache, pelvic pain, shooting pain down legs, shoulder pain, SEVERE migraines, and weight gain. I had been dieting since I had my son last year, and it was very difficult to loose weight (but I did- 50lbs.). In spite of this, I gained 20lbs. back in the last two months when my other symptoms suddenly became unbearable. Believe me when I say that the negative side-effects of the Mirena take a while to begin. While I had a difficult "adjustment time" during the first 3-4 months and suffered discomfort during periods, I didn't consider having the Mirena removed. In the last month, I have been living with a PERMANENT migraine and constant aching in my abdomen and back. After removal- (the DAY of removal) all the pain is gone and my migraine is lessening. Before my appointment, I was convinced that it must have moved or perforated my abdomen. If that wasn't causing the pain, I was planning on dealing with an ectopic pregnancy and surgery. The pain was so constant, that I was certain that something must have gone horribly wrong. Yet in the office, the pregnancy test was negative and the mirena was in it's correct place. This should be reasuring to any of you ladies that are experiencing pain and expecting the worst. While the Dr. didn't acknowledge that the Mirena could be to blame for all of my problems, she simply said "let's take it out and see if it helps anything." No referrals, no tests, etc.... this tells me that she thought that removal would be sufficient. But she did make me feel like I was rediculously old fashioned when I asked for a diaphram- by informing me that it's only 80% effective, and telling me that she "hasn't measured for one in this office before," and that "back when they were popular they used to only use one type of spermicide with it"... but she couldn't remember the name. Listen- after the pain and crazy hormone manipulation I've been through... it's that and condoms from now on! (By the way- the diaphram was not as tricky as I thought it would be.. it's worth a try ladies!) I know that everyone is different and the party line is that the Mirena works for some people (they'd like you to believe "most people"), but I find it hard to believe that it is good for anyone because of the universal discomfort it causes. Some people are willing to tolerate the discomfort (as I was) because they believe that they will not get pregnant, but that is not necessarily the case and accidental pregnancies get very complicated with an IUD. They can involve surgery, loss of pregnancy, fatal ruptures (ectopic), etc. There are worse things than just finding out that your birth control failed- and most of them occure with the Mirena. I'm just glad that I was able to solve my problems by getting it out. After researching my IUD (the Dr.'s office didn't give me all of the information), I am glad to be done with it. The pain just made it an EASY decision, and my result has convinced me of the evils of the Mirena.

Re: Mirena IUD

I am stunned at these comments. My experiences of my Mirena (and I am on my 2nd. Its been seven years since my first was inserted.) have been opposite. I did have periodic pain (not bad by my standards which was due to faulty insertion) and breast tenderness and skin issues, but this think CURED my severe PMDD which was destroying my life. Completely took it away. I can't recommend  highly enough.

Re: Mirena IUD

jennsing777,

i want to thank you for your article. i have been having pains in my pelvic area, legs and back for about a month now. i was super scared of everything that was the worst possible. your words comforted me in such a way i cried. my appointment for removal of my mirena has been schduled for about 3 weeks. and my appoitment is finally today. i feel 100% more confident about my visit today.

my pains have been steady and killing me. i have been doubling my doses of naproxen to ease the pains. i even spent tons of money on these menstral cramp heating pads that adhere to my underwear. everything in my life has been effected by this.

i have had my iud for 3 years. and up until about 1 month ago i loved it. i have gained 30 pounds since it was inserted, acne, severe moods swings. but i was able to handle that. but the pain is horrible. im so excited to remove it. im not trying to bash it either, but i do wanna say to every girl out there. research the crap out of it first. make sure your ready for a commitment like this.

so other things i noticed with my iud: no libido i imagine that comes with the no period thing, 30 pound weight gains, huge under the skin pimples (very painful), mood swings, decrease natural moisture for sex, and tender breasts.

im sure i have more to say. but that is it for now. thanks for your comforting words. they were like hugs. xoxo

:)

Re: Mirena IUD

a year after writing this advice article I still have my mirena. The back pain has gone mostly away, but I still have stubborn weight that I can't seem to drop no matter how many hours I spend at the gym or how well I eat.

I've decided that once this one is expired (or whatever you call it, lol) I won't be getting another. I wish that I was able to get my tubes tied, but in this country it's very difficult to convince a doctor to tie your tubes if you haven't had 3 children or are over 30. sucks. I'm not sure what I will be doing for BC after this, as the pill doesn't work well for me, depo makes me fat, and me and latex don't mix well.

I have all the luck! :(

I am so glad I read this I have been decieding whether to get one due to heavy periods but I haven't gotten it done because I'm scared that it may fall out but don't know if this has ever happened to anyone. I have been to my gp and a gynocolgist and they never mentioned any side effects, and I know your not saying this could happen to some else but I have enough problems with migraines now with out any other problems that could arise so I am now fully decieded I am not going to get this done. Re: Mirena IUD

OMG - I just had an appointment with the womans health nurse and she recommended that Mirena would be a good option for me. I would only want it in for a couple of years, but seen as how i have so many troubles with the pill and injection, she thought it would be good. I have just found a couple of forums where many people have said they gained alot of weight (like 20kgs!).

Thanks for your advice, i think i will be doing alot more reading on this before making a decision.

Re: Mirena IUD

i have had my mirena in for 4 years, and have only recently been starting to notice changes in my health. i am starting to get very tired, and over the past couple of months have been gaining weight - ( about 5 - 6 kg's- which in not normal for me as i am very petite)my doctor advised me to have it taken out about 3 months ago - as i had an infection in my uterus ... i have been considering it ever since ... i have had a reasonable amount of back pain lately - and just put it down to work - but now i am having second thoughts and i am now starting to wonder if it is due to the mirena .. i have had 4 years of comfort with mine - but i think it has reached its life span for me ! i have an appointment today with the doc , and i am going to speak with him about having it removed ...

keep in mind girls , All women respond differently to different things ... it is all trial and error with most things ... unfortunately we cannot tell if it is going to agree with one and not another ... it worked for me for 4 years, and i am happy with having it taken out now -

Re: Mirena IUD

Hi All,

Well here we go, i had my first mirena 5 years ago and like most people thought it was fantastic i never had it to stop pregnancy but to control heavy bleeding and yes its been fantasic,I was a major sufferer of Headaches before and the Mirena has fixed those,No headaches for 5 years.

Had a new one 3 years in and the one i have now has been inplace for 2 years now,But now the syptoms begin.

Had some of these symptom before but not real bad but as time goes on i now have a reason for them

Major lower back pain just in the last 4 weeks or so has been the worse ever which is why i started looking in to it and found this forum,,very tender breasts, mood swings, depression you name it i have , At first you think its the best thing in the world no periods,no pill to take, for me no headaches.I also have the shooting pain down my legs and in my shoulders as i have some other sufferers have had,i'm sure it will be a answer to alot of things going on with my health. For some it causes headaches but for me it fixed them,Hormonal headaches can be some of the worst,i will look into other forms of headache relif.

I am booked in the Doctors tomorrow morning to have it removed the only regret will be im sure the headaches will come back and am really not happy about that but in the long run i'm sure its the right thing for me.

Not until i read this forum did i realise that it was the Mirene causing all of this.

I will keep you all up dated on how i am feeling in the next few weeks,Hope this helps even just one of you with questions i wish i had answered before i got mine, not that it would have stopped me but at least be aware of what can happen to some.

Re: Mirena IUD

I had the mirena in up until 1 mth ago i had it in for 9 mths and it was the worse 9 mths. i had my period the whole time and each period lasted 2 weeks and i was moody. This was the only thing i could try without clotting as i am not allowed to clot. i regret everything about the mirena.

Then there are others that i have spoken to on minti that has the mirena and they swear by it have no periods no trouble what so ever. LUCKY YOU. i was the unlucky one typical

Really look into it, i only did it cause it was my only option. no my only option is hysterectomy which dosnt bother me wanted one for 2 years. and now i hopefully can get 1 now that the mirena has been rulled out.

Re: Mirena IUD

I totally agree with you..
I had a IUD before.. But I never looked into it.. I was younger and didn't know, so I went with what the doctor suggested!

Now I read up on that Mirena and I found this : link
For the disadvantages I had the very last one, where it punctured the wall of my uterus.. (SCARY) and that's why I will never get an IUD again... It took me years to get pregnant and I didn't have my period for over a year.. Everything was f*cked up on the inside of me.. I even had to have an emergency surgery to remove it ASAP and I have the scares to prove it..
Thankfully, I think I will just stick with the good ol' birth control pill lol.. Thankfully, I actually did read up on it before taking it and made sure it was going to be the right 'one' for me!

Good advice!

Re: Mirena IUD

I was unable to take oral birthcontrol because it made me crazy. My doctor suggested Mirena. I have had it for 2 years now, and I love it. I think it's wonderful. However, everyone's body chemistry is different and who knows how you wil react to something. Fortunately, for me I can tolerate the IUD. YIPPEE! I would definately recommend it to others, but do your research and make sure that it's something that you want to do.

I've had my mirena now for 2 years, think it's great for birth control as well as I had heavy periods.  I guess you could say my periods are almost non existent now which is wonderful!!!  The downside is increased eating.....that's something i'm really struggling with on a daily basis........actually didn't relate it to the mirena.....is it, or isn't it???

I had one put in last year and the doc was very upfront about it all. Finally after 7 months the bleeding has I hope stopped, but I have to go back in 3 months for another check and possible removal cause it isn't doing what it was put in there for (didn't need it for contraception). Good article, gives a few of the down sides to it which is something we should all be aware of. Leisa

Re: Mirena IUD

My doctor was upfront with this information b4 i got iud. He said he will still reccomend the copper b4 the mirena you dont get any of this side effects. The difference is one is hormone based (mirena) Which realeses hormones and the copper has nothing. This is why you dont get all the side effects. As for getting your period it applies the same as the mirena most people,  it will stop for them others is very light depending on the person.

Well donr thanyou for sharing and im glad that you have got this out there for people to read.!

Re: Mirena IUD

Hi, I didn't think the copper ones were used any more. With the Mirena you get the hormones (and therefore the side effects) but the copper ones work differently. The copper ones don't stop ovulation (and therefore fertilisation), the stop the implantation of the embryo. So you actually conceive every month, but the embryo can't implant. So it has different health and moral/ ethical implications to the mirena (which stops ovulation and therefore fertilisation altogether like the pill). Just wondered if your doctor went through that with you?

I'm glad your doctor went through the Mirena side effects with you - lots of people talk about the Mirena as a perfect solution to everything, and the side effects really do need to be looked at.
