Mirena IUD |

Hi everyone!
Just a quick little bit of advice for anyone who's considering getting a Mirena IUD.
Up until a couple months ago, I was totally in love with my IUD (lol I'm silly I know). No periods. Super low chance of getting pregnant. Sounds too good to be true! Well... turns out it's more of a double edged sword than I had counted on.
Just the other day, while I was in the washroom at work, I mentioned to one of my co-workers that my breasts were killing me, (no, not preggers!) she asked me if I had a Mirena. Of course I said yes. Then she asked if my back was hurting. Again, yes, sometimes so bad that I have trouble getting out of bed in the morning. Then she asked about depression. Another big yes on that one. She advised me to check out some forums and newsgroups on Mirena.
Man! On top of the more obvious side-effects, there are alot of odd ones that are really starting to be more common place. Over-eating, weight gain, back pain, depression and anxiety... the list goes on!
Now, I'm not at all against Mirena, and I still am on the fence as to what I'm going to do about the one that I have, I'm still making my pro/con list.
I just wanted all of you to know. Please, on top of the information that the doctor gives you about whatever your birth control choices may be, do a little more research than I did. Talk to people that have made the same choice. Go into forums and newsgroups (and Minti, of course!). Be as informed as you can possibly be. Weigh all your options. Back pain vs pregnancy is the big one for me at the moment! lol

Re: Mirena IUD
First off, congrats and good for you on overcoming a difficult situation!
The entire point of me writing the article wasn't to bash Mirena. I've still got mine, still dealing with the problems it brings me, and still quite happy that I haven't fallen pregnant.
Alot of the comments about Mirena on this article seem very negative, and you're right, it very well could just be the vocal minority.
I hope that by reading this article, people will open their eyes a little, do a bit of their own research, ask questions of their doctors, and not just go blindly with whatever form of birth control their doctor hands out. Yes they are the proffessional, but we need to take responsibility for our own reproductive health.
Again, I'm glad that your experience differs from alot of the ones here in the comments section, and hopefully more people will be encouraged to share their positivity after reading about your situation. It's good to have as much information as possible when making a decision about birth control.
My intent was in no way to deter people from getting a Mirena.
Thank you for your comment!
xx. Charity

Re: Mirena IUD
I got my Mirena out today (the pelvic pain had been so bad the last 3 days that I would feel it shoot down my legs as I walked). As I got up to walk out of the Doctor's office, I noticed that it was all gone. I had also experienced back pain throughout my 13 months with the Mirena (which had become much worse in the last 2 weeks), and it vanished after removal as well. My symptoms were: back ache, pelvic pain, shooting pain down legs, shoulder pain, SEVERE migraines, and weight gain. I had been dieting since I had my son last year, and it was very difficult to loose weight (but I did- 50lbs.). In spite of this, I gained 20lbs. back in the last two months when my other symptoms suddenly became unbearable. Believe me when I say that the negative side-effects of the Mirena take a while to begin. While I had a difficult "adjustment time" during the first 3-4 months and suffered discomfort during periods, I didn't consider having the Mirena removed. In the last month, I have been living with a PERMANENT migraine and constant aching in my abdomen and back. After removal- (the DAY of removal) all the pain is gone and my migraine is lessening. Before my appointment, I was convinced that it must have moved or perforated my abdomen. If that wasn't causing the pain, I was planning on dealing with an ectopic pregnancy and surgery. The pain was so constant, that I was certain that something must have gone horribly wrong. Yet in the office, the pregnancy test was negative and the mirena was in it's correct place. This should be reasuring to any of you ladies that are experiencing pain and expecting the worst. While the Dr. didn't acknowledge that the Mirena could be to blame for all of my problems, she simply said "let's take it out and see if it helps anything." No referrals, no tests, etc.... this tells me that she thought that removal would be sufficient. But she did make me feel like I was rediculously old fashioned when I asked for a diaphram- by informing me that it's only 80% effective, and telling me that she "hasn't measured for one in this office before," and that "back when they were popular they used to only use one type of spermicide with it"... but she couldn't remember the name. Listen- after the pain and crazy hormone manipulation I've been through... it's that and condoms from now on! (By the way- the diaphram was not as tricky as I thought it would be.. it's worth a try ladies!) I know that everyone is different and the party line is that the Mirena works for some people (they'd like you to believe "most people"), but I find it hard to believe that it is good for anyone because of the universal discomfort it causes. Some people are willing to tolerate the discomfort (as I was) because they believe that they will not get pregnant, but that is not necessarily the case and accidental pregnancies get very complicated with an IUD. They can involve surgery, loss of pregnancy, fatal ruptures (ectopic), etc. There are worse things than just finding out that your birth control failed- and most of them occure with the Mirena. I'm just glad that I was able to solve my problems by getting it out. After researching my IUD (the Dr.'s office didn't give me all of the information), I am glad to be done with it. The pain just made it an EASY decision, and my result has convinced me of the evils of the Mirena.

Re: Mirena IUD
jennsing777,
i want to thank you for your article. i have been having pains in my pelvic area, legs and back for about a month now. i was super scared of everything that was the worst possible. your words comforted me in such a way i cried. my appointment for removal of my mirena has been schduled for about 3 weeks. and my appoitment is finally today. i feel 100% more confident about my visit today.
my pains have been steady and killing me. i have been doubling my doses of naproxen to ease the pains. i even spent tons of money on these menstral cramp heating pads that adhere to my underwear. everything in my life has been effected by this.
i have had my iud for 3 years. and up until about 1 month ago i loved it. i have gained 30 pounds since it was inserted, acne, severe moods swings. but i was able to handle that. but the pain is horrible. im so excited to remove it. im not trying to bash it either, but i do wanna say to every girl out there. research the crap out of it first. make sure your ready for a commitment like this.
so other things i noticed with my iud: no libido i imagine that comes with the no period thing, 30 pound weight gains, huge under the skin pimples (very painful), mood swings, decrease natural moisture for sex, and tender breasts.
im sure i have more to say. but that is it for now. thanks for your comforting words. they were like hugs. xoxo
:)

Re: Mirena IUD
Hi All,
Well here we go, i had my first mirena 5 years ago and like most people thought it was fantastic i never had it to stop pregnancy but to control heavy bleeding and yes its been fantasic,I was a major sufferer of Headaches before and the Mirena has fixed those,No headaches for 5 years.
Had a new one 3 years in and the one i have now has been inplace for 2 years now,But now the syptoms begin.
Had some of these symptom before but not real bad but as time goes on i now have a reason for them
Major lower back pain just in the last 4 weeks or so has been the worse ever which is why i started looking in to it and found this forum,,very tender breasts, mood swings, depression you name it i have , At first you think its the best thing in the world no periods,no pill to take, for me no headaches.I also have the shooting pain down my legs and in my shoulders as i have some other sufferers have had,i'm sure it will be a answer to alot of things going on with my health. For some it causes headaches but for me it fixed them,Hormonal headaches can be some of the worst,i will look into other forms of headache relif.
I am booked in the Doctors tomorrow morning to have it removed the only regret will be im sure the headaches will come back and am really not happy about that but in the long run i'm sure its the right thing for me.
Not until i read this forum did i realise that it was the Mirene causing all of this.
I will keep you all up dated on how i am feeling in the next few weeks,Hope this helps even just one of you with questions i wish i had answered before i got mine, not that it would have stopped me but at least be aware of what can happen to some.
Vee
