Anencephaly- Do you know what it is?

I had never heard of it, until a couple of days ago, when i read a book, and had no idea what they were talking about. Until i hopped on the web and found tonnes of articles. but only found the word once in all of minti.

What is Anencephaly?

Anencephaly is a neural defect, when the babys skull, spinal chord, and brain, does not form properly in the womb. Babies, with this condition are usually missing the thinking and coordination part of the brain. Neural defects affect 1 in every 1000 babies.

How is it diagnosed?

Anencephaly can be diagnosed from any scan from about 14 weeks gestation, or from birth.

What treatment can we have?

Unfortunately, there is no treatment. Death is inevitable with these babies. Most babies are miscarried even before the diagnosis is made, some, choose to abort, and the rest carry out the rest of the pregnancy. Babies if carried to full term however can live up to 3-4 days.

What causes Anencephaly?

there is no real cause of this defect, just "one of those things" however, scientist and researchers STRONGLY believe that Folic Acid Greatly reduces the risk of having an anencephalactic baby by 50% to 70%.

Mothers health?

The mother is fine throughout. Sometimes the mother can have a build up of amniotic fluid which has nothing more than a bit of extra discomfort.

This is an awful thing to happen, i would never wish it on anyone. I didn't want to give any pictures, they aren't pretty, but i will provide links however for those who are interested in having a look.

Oh that is so sad.

I never heard of Anencephaly and thank you for sharing this atricles. I'm glad I learn it. It is so scary and hope it doesnt happen to many people.

lol,, we have broadband, and then by about 20 into it we use all our usage up and go back to dial up, i hate it. I will never go back to dial up full time. all though ive nearly had too a few times, but usually i forfiet other things first. lol, i hate dial up

Thanks Nat, i took it too, and they say i should be taking it now cause im trying, and i laughed and wondered why i would waste my money on something that wasnt there yet, so i have just got some folic acid and now taking it. very scary indeed xxx

Thanks for doing this . . . This is how I lost my son. I can't begin to tell you how I felt faced with this condition and the situation. If a baby is allowed to term with this condition and they manage to survive the birth, the only thing they are really capable of is feeling pain. As a mum I could not do this to my son. SAdly i was well into my pregnancy when my son was diagnosed . . See my blog for my story.

thanks hun, your right, people do need to be aware. its quite commen when you se the statiscs of it, its why its important to take folate. A very wise woman just told me an important peice of info i intend on researching futher to add it to my findings.
