epilepsy

electrifying02 by electrifying02 Talking Back(January 2008) (rank 152nd)

epilepsy:

there is many forms of epilepsy . you can have many seizures a day or have none and just shake . this was my experience of epilepsy .

i have got it from my perviuos name but taken out the dictonary bit as

it caused issues last time

I am writing about epilepsy as I had it as a child. when I was in grade six it was the day b4 camp and I was on the computer next to a boy at school and I grabbed the computer screen now I can remember this far just grabbing out for my computer screen and his and I was petrified and the class was laughing at me next minute I remember being on the floor waking up but very tiered. I was taken to sick bay where they called my mum to pick me up and from there I was taken to a specialist who they diagnosed me with epilepsy. I could not play station or the computer or go night clubbing when I was 18 as the lights could set me off... i had to miss grade 6 camp but oh well . When I got to high school it was hard as I could not use a computer I hate to hand write all my assignments which was hard. I got picked on allot... when i meet my best friend she took me for who i am. To be honest if you looked at me or anyone you would not know that we had epilepsy. I have out grown it now but I still have to be careful driving computer and sleep I have to have a certain amount of sleep or it can trigger it off again... i may not be bright but i aint dumb no one is dumb . Some people are just brighter than others but as long as we try.

I was on tegrotol not sure of the spelling I don’t have any medications for epilepsy anymore

If you have a son or daughter with it or yourself or hubby it’s not the end of the world

I have lost friends over it and me writing this I may lose some more but I am me and I can’t change anything about it. Take me for who I am not what I did have. None should be judged for who they are some didn’t choose to be that way

Re: epilepsy

you are right bel! having epilepsy is definately not the end of the world, as i myself suffer from it!

It can be scary sometimes because even though i am on medication for it, the medication only controls 70% of seizures, so i have to learn to control the other 30%.... would be scary to have a seizure behind the wheel i reckon.... so i dont have my license!

Thanks for sharing!

Re: epilepsy

Hi electeifying2,

My daughter has had petit-mal since she was three. The teachers at school kept saying she was a daydreamer, could not concentrate and all the rest I expect youv'e heard.  I took her out of main school, as soon as the law changed,  to home educate her as I felt school was not able to teach her the way I knew she could learn.

She was labled a slow leaner. Missed out on play times, having to finish work off, or craft time, going to "special class" It was undrermining her confidance.

She is taking Lamotrigine 300mg.  Aparently it is the NEW wonder drug, without so many side effects. Her short term memories shot.  She still  has  apsences frequently throughout the day .  She always looses the first minuet befoer it hits, and no idea what has gone on while she was 'away' It can take the next 10 mins. before she is confident enough to carry on what she was doing.

She's been teaching herself the gutar and keyboard. And  is frequently anoyed with loosing where she has got to witch means" having to keep going back to catch up" as she puts it.

I know what you mean by Loosing friends or teasing Sirah has had to put up with this as well. Infact she is 21 this month and has no, what I would call close  friends as she feels less threatened then. She won't even apply for a free bus pass as it's labled under dissability and she dosen't want any one who knows her to state treating her differently if they see her using one.

I am glad you have been brave enought to write about you expearence. Thankyou. I have sent this artical to Sirah and hope she may be intoutch.
