Getting Ready For Baby

dannii17 by dannii17 Talking Back(January 2008) (rank 110th)

The first few weeks of baby coming home you may wish to have the baby sleeping in your room. How ever you should have another special place that can be designated the baby's room, Or perhaps an area in another room. Just make sure there is enough room for, feeding,

sleeping, nappy changing ect;

The room where the baby sleeps needs to be kept warm.Try to have a constant temperature between 16-20 *C.  It is a good idea to have a room set up for the baby before he or she arrives as you may not have any time on your hands or energy once the baby has arrived. When decorating the room make sure that there are colourful bright colours and patterns as this will stimulate the baby, Also try and make the room suitable for your child for when they get older so you dont have to change it again. Some people may not be able to afford a change table or may choose not to buy one.As a substitute you can use a set of drawers which you should have the babys clothes in and if there just a low set you can put a mat on top and change the baby there, now i know its common sence but " Never leave your child unattended ". Also keep all your babies changing needs like creams, powders ect close so you dont need to move while changing baby, but always keep out of reach of the child.

You might want to check on or need to feed or change the baby during the middle of the night. It is a good idea to have some other lighting besides the main switch as you dont want to disturb your baby just incase he or she is still sleeping. If you own your own home perhaps think about getting a dimmer switch installed so you can turn the light on low,or you can always have a night light just keep the light close to the power point and dont have any cords running along the floor.

The flooring in babys room should be non slip and warm,so the room keeps warm in the cooler month.Alsoif your having curtains in the room, take care to choose nonflammable materials.

Last of all place covers over all power point sockets and choose flameproof bedding and upholstery.

i hope some of this can help ppl,and ill be continuing this tomorrow, need some sleep now.

Re: Getting Ready For Baby

Good advice for new mums thanks! I spent ages getting babies room ready before she was born, but kept her in our room for over a year! She still mostly sleeps with us too, he bedroom just seems to be a playroom. I also change nappies on the bed, found it easier after a c-section and just stayed in the habit. Em xxxx

Re: Getting Ready For Baby

I am with winja on this one.
This will help some people, but for others, like myself this isn't able to be done.
I only have a 2 bedroom house and with a 3yr old (Well almost 3) the baby will be sharing once she is about 5 months old - with her big sister.

I don't see the point in going all ga ga over a seperate baby room because when they are a little older they will want change. I think neutral colours with just a few nice pictures on the wall is sufficient enough.

Good advice though,

Cheers

Re: Getting Ready For Baby

good advice.

i have the baby in my room in his cot, i see no need for him to have a room of his own if hes in with me and im feeding and changing him and there is room for a cot, saves on having monitors and having to walk around alot of a night into other rooms i do the same as arna and change him on my bed as i find its much easier in the middle of the night.

Re: Getting Ready For Baby

We change our babies nappies on our bed.  Put down a special change mat, and can sit in comfort.  A baby nightlight can provide good light too.  Not bright (I need sleep! lol), but soothing and just enough to see by.  Also means you don't wake yourself up too much too.

I hope you aren't overdoing things.  You need to rest!  By the way, you should have been in bed ages ago!  Says she who is still sitting here!
