Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts

MissKelly by MissKelly Speaking(January 2008) (rank 274th)

If you are in the US and have a son entering the first grade then you should look into your local Cub Scout pack. If you are having trouble finding one then call the Boy Scouts of America for a local boy scout council phone number. Cub scouts is a great way for boys to play and learn with other boys their age and feel like they are a part of a group. It is also a great way for you to meet other parents in your community and parents of children that your child may go to school with. If your child is home schooled then they could use this as their social gathering time. The boys will learn all kinds of skills that they will probably use their whole lives. I can not say enough good things about the Cub Scout programs or the Boy Scouts. My boys have learned how to work as a team, build things, fix things, cook, keep clean and organized, and be more self reliant. It certainly was good for their self esteem and they have life long friends from their scout group and from scouts all over the US that they have met going to camps and other adventures. Scouts is a group that you can attend any time and get out of it what you want. Sometimes their is homework or sports that may need attention also and scouts will be there when ever you can come and join.WARNING..... I have seen this before in the younger boys, once they get the uniform shirt they want to wear it everywhere. They will want to wear it to church, to school, to grandmas house. They just love to seem to wear a uniform and belong to a special group. I am a scout mom with 2 sons who have been Scouts for about 10 years now and I can not say enough GOOD things about the scouting programs that are available. Check it out, you may both enjoy it.

Re: Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts

I think if your kids want to be in scouts or organisations like it -fab. My twinnies both joined scouts a few months ago and only went for a few weeks. Boredom sets in real fast with my boys. They used to go to Karate also but that novelty wore off also. If your kids want to do any extra curricular activities ,it should be encouraged . The thing is nowadays, kids think scouts and guides and suchlike is a bit 'geeky'. TTFN

Re: Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts

I was involved from the Brownies to Rangers, Assistant Leader through to District Leader in Girl Guides, Venturer to Rover and Cub Scout Leader in the Scouts. Performed in numerous Gang Shows with them as well. The range of activities that I got to participate in that I would not have been able to has been superb. I have many friends from Australia from going to Jamborees, and also sadly used to have friends around the world but lost contact. It is a great opportunity. I just wish my kids had wanted to join, but they didn't.

As a girl guide leader, I can't recommend this enough! Guides and Scouts are the largest youth organisations in the world, and there's a reason. There aren't many activities for kids which have been around for 100 years and are so imbedded into our society.

Here's the links for Australians - (the national page will give you the contact info for your state and they will tell you where you closest unit is, when they meet etc)

Scouts Australia

Girl Guides Australia

Thanks for the great advice!
