Dislocation of body parts.

Anonymous Author (January 2008)

I thought Id write about this as it is very close to me as I have dislocated my knees since I was 8.

Joint dislocation (Latin: luxatio) [1] occurs when bones in a joint become displaced or misaligned. It is often caused by a sudden

impact to the joint. The ligaments always become damaged as a result of a dislocation. (from Wikipeadia)

Now as I said I have had to deal with this for a very long time, almost 20 years and I have had 3 operations to combate this. sadly I still dislocate my knee.

Now about this. Dislocation is when a joint gets hit or twisted and it comes away from the other bones, in my case my knee cap moves away from my knee and down to the underpart of my knee. to either the left or right depending on what knee (outward) It is extreemly painful and I personaly would say worse than having a baby (but that is my opinion) I personally have to smash with my fist, my knee cap back into place. this is the most painful part.

First aid for dislocations from my experience.

  • Get ice and pack the area in ice as it reduces the swelling
  • if the body part is not back in place immeadeatly take to hospital as the joint can move (there has been cases of the knee moving down to the ankle area)
  • If you have a support bandage (the brown elastic ones) put on in opposite direction to the injury. ie if knee when out outward make sure the pressure is inwards)
  • nurofen is a great pain relief as it is an antiinflametry.
  • make sure no pressure is on the area ie leg keep off, sholder dont put things on it.

There are treatments avalible through your doctor, I was given squats to do but made them worse. A orthipedic surgon can offer surgical  options. I had 4 inches of muscles removed to tighten up my knee, and 2 lots of pins in my knees to help stop it. Also there are natural treaments such as acupunture.

I have not found anything that has worked so i keep my bandages and crutches close to me.

hope this is helpful.

Re: Dislocation of body parts.

I know that's painful....I've seperated my shoulder before, and that hurt, can't imagine dislocating it.  My ex-stepdad used to dislocate his shoulder all the time...He used to ram into the wall to get it back into place, otherwise he would go to the er for them to fix it....ouch!

Re: Dislocation of body parts.

Good article!

One thing you didn't mention was to NOT try and force it back into place, that's something that a doctor needs to do. There are nerves and arteries all over the place, and if you force it back into place you can squish them and cause major problems. Like you could even lose a limb, or have massive nerve damage.

I dislocated my shoulder in high school and it hurt soooooo bad. No more volley ball for me!

Re: Dislocation of body parts.

Hi Liz,

I use my knees as party tricks as people freak when you pop out. My eldest Sam can pop her hip out and her friends freak everytime . . I've stopped my tricks now that I am older and I am always warning Sam not to do it as the long term complications just aren't worth a few laughs . .

Great article . .

Cheers Kellz

Re: Dislocation of body parts.

ouch. sam should be careful as you can get the nerve caught in your hip and paralise your leg. ( thats what the surgon told my mum when they operated on her hip)

it is scary but. my fav one was for my 13th birthday i was pushed in line at class and my best friend pushed me back and did my knee. everyone freaked cause i screamed and then laughted.

Re: Dislocation of body parts.

Hi Libby,

My daughter has a dislocated knee cap after her knee took a nasty frount on collision into the frount of a parked car swerving out of the way of an on comming car. At the hospital she was diagnosed with joint hypermobility.  So it is not recomened for her to have an opperation.  her physotherapist gave her some exercises to hopefully strenghten the muscle  and ligament  to help pull the knee cap back into place and then hold it there.

She has also started to do extensive streching exercises, similar to the gymnasts, to strenghten her whole body muscles. She is not recomending this regime to you  as she spends up to three hours doing them.  She thought that  these two web sites may helpfull.

It may be a good idea to talk it over with your doctor?  he/she may offer physotherapy , or a properly fitted knee brace.  my daughter has two sizes of knee brace ( one for when her knee swells one for every day)  plus a walking stick

I hope things get better for you,  I know how much pain she has  .
