Periodic Fun ?????

nell18-3 by nell18-3 Young Parent(February 2008) (rank 2nd)

In my opinion

The most annoying adverts you see on TV

Are those beautiful woman

Strolling along the beach

Smiling Happily in their light flimsy dress

Because they have found the secret to happiness

Yes they have discovered the towels with wings

Or the tampons that are presented like little sweets !!!!!!!!

What I want to know is where is the average woman in this scenario, you know the one that looks more like me, stressed, spotty, cramped up and hormonal, who doesn't care that there are some amazing pretty towels/tampons on the market, we just want people to back off and leave us alone !!!!!!!

It is said that the average woman loses an egg cup full of blood every month !!! What they forget to add is that the said eggcup is the one that Jack took from the giants castle when we climbed up the beanstalk, or at least that is what it feels like !!!

The hard thing for us mums with daughters is to educate our daughter into believing that periods are a sign they are growing up and its something to celebrate LOL Who are we kidding ?????

Although I am having a light hearted look at this subject, we all know this is nothing to laugh about. It is vitally important we prepare our daughters for all facets of what to expect with our periods.

Yes, in a way, a young girl starting her period is something to celebrate, it is a big turning point in the young girls life, it brings with it a whole new set of possibilitles that we also have to educate our daughters on.

Apart from the obvious that we all know and warn our children about, here are some other important points to teach our daughters.

Hygiene

Especially during our period, it is vital we keep clean, it is absolutely fine to bath during your period and seeing that most of us are very conscious of the fear of feeling dirty or smelly, a bath is also great at relaxing us and helping with any cramps

Disposal
Is there ever a worst sight you could come across then a rolled up sanitary towel on the floor of a public toilet !!!!!!!!!! We must teach our daughters to always dispose of soiled towels/tampons in the correct fashion, this does NOT mean flushing down the toilet, causing blocks etc. It could be as simple as always having a bin with a lid in the bathroom and showing them how to wrap the item in toilet roll before disposing sensibly

Being Prepared
Never be caught short, always make sure you have spares. The regular cycle is 5 days of every 28 days but we all know and can remember those times when we have been caught unprepared and find an empty packet !!!!!!!! I taught my daughter to always buy her stock the time of the month she was already on, it was a way of reminding her for next time.

My daughter is very lucky, she has a caring boyfriend that runs her baths and rubs her back and provides her with hot water bottles during her worst days, that is what I would wish for my sons future partners too. So don't make periods only about your daughters

And remember, smile, we are woman who are lucky to experience these periodic moments in time !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Periodic Fun ?????

Very nicely written.  Just how big was the egg cup Jack got?  For me it would have to be bigger than the MCG.

Teaching our kids is very important, boys and girls.  Thanks for sharing, I have at least 4 that will be in the womenhood class here in a few years time! lol.

Fantastic! I never actually got taught much, i didnt know where to dispose of the rubbish etc, we had been taught stuff in classes, but who listens when your around all your friends?? I didnt. I basically had to figure out what was to be done and all  all on my own. I will make sure my daughter knows what is to be done, and my son to be condsiderate of woman. Your daughter is so lucky, can we swap partners lol

Re: Periodic Fun ?????

Periods fun? PMSL like any woman,  i wish!!! I hate my periods as they are always so very heavy and painful!

When disposing of my sanitary napkins (pardon the poshness haha) i always wrap them in toilet paper, then put them in a lovely smelly nappy sack thing (you know the diaper bags used to dispose diapers etc) and then go put it in the big wheelie bin outside!

Plenty of TLC goes along way for women with periods!

Great advice!

Re: Periodic Fun ?????

Great article! As my DD1 never left me alone to go to the toilet alone eventually she caught me with a tampon so I had to explain a little bit about it - she was 2 or 3 at the time. Mind you, my SIL was caught by her toddler son who was so horrified by the idea of what she was doing he kept repeating "ouch, mummy" !

My mum was caught out as I beat her to it by 5 years - I wouldnt wish starting without knowing what was happening on anyone! I've been warned by MIL that her genes will probably mean my daughters start at 10, so it wont be long before this is reality with us .

Re: Periodic Fun ?????

My boys have known for years about what girls can be like when they have their periods. Esp as mine have gotten worse since having Connor. 2 ops later and a third to come this year, they know that the ads are not correct. Great article (and I must say I am VERY glad I have only boys)

Re: Periodic Fun ?????

Another masterpiece I wish I could write advice the way you do.  I prefer tampons I know there can be side effects but luckily I haven't had any yet.  Couldn't cope with towels when I was younger kept smelling THAT smell and it just made me paranoid.  Eww just the thought of periods makes me want to shower and swallow loads of painkillers, lol.
