Dunstan Baby Language

Anonymous Author (February 2008)

As I looked on the advice page, I was surprised not find an article written about Dunstan Baby Language, considering this site is for parents and parenting.  I thought to at least give my experience and tell you why I will always advise anyone who has given birth, especially

a new mother, to review the site below and watch the incredible DVD.

I had my little girl in September of 2006. As happy as I was to have a new addition to our lives, I found myself spending all of October a mess emotionally and exhausted physically.  I didn't know how to keep my little one from crying, and I didn't know why she was crying. I spoke to so many moms that said, "you just gotta try everything and one of them should work". Well, I tried and it never seemed to work. By the end of October I was exhausted, confused, depressed and told my husband in a fit of emotion, "...this is happening because my baby hates me. It HAS to be. I can't keep cradling, feeding, singing, and everything else. I just don't know what she wants and I'm telling you, she must not like me."

I remember being in my daughter's room, sitting in the glider/rocker and rocking with my crying little girl...sobbing. I looked up and prayed. I said "G-d, seriously, you HAVE to help me. I don't know what she wants. I feel like I'm a horrible mother! I love this child so much...please help me!"

I later found myself downstairs on my couch just freaked out, wondering what I'm going to do? I feel like I have no connection with my daughter because no matter what I do, she cries. It's not like the movies..you sing a lullaby and POOF! baby is sleeping. I turned on my t.v. and put on the Oprah show that I TiVoed. I saw all these babies and a beautiful long-haired lady from Australia, Priscilla Dunstan, explain how babies actually have 5 sounds that do have meaning when they cry...you just have to hear them. I looked up and held my heart and whispered "Thank you!" and continued watching the show. This woman had maybe 10 parents, each with one child, twins, a boy or a girl...all children being newborn up to 3 months old. All were crying and within 10 minutes this Heavenly woman had every baby calm and happy, all because she heard their cry and told the parent what their baby was asking for.

I just about fell off my couch. It was EXACTLY what I needed to know. So since I had this show recorded I went back to the baby cry examples that she provided and listened. I wrote down the sounds phonetically and just prayed. When my little baby woke up, and eventually cried over something I listened...and holy moly...there it was! One of the cries this woman talked about!  It was a cry to be burped, so I picked her up and, still half believing this show, I rubbed her back...and buuuuuuurp! There it was, and then a happy baby followed.

My husband can tell you behind my back how quickly the change in mood was in our home; from a confused cranky and upsetting household to peace...and quiet...and laughter. All within 2 days. I contacted my hospital and urged them to work a seminar about this to new moms so they wouldn't have to be as upset  and confused as I was, and have so many sleepless nights. Then I thought of how many mothers out there that shake their baby to calm them down out of frustration that their baby won't just keep quiet.  And how many deaths or injuries occur because of that exact situation? This wonderful woman's information can actually SAVE babies from that plight, and mothers from frustration, confusion and exhaustion!!

So if you are a mother of a newborn - 3 month old, or are pregnant please take a look at this site and think about learning the shortcuts that it will take you to get closer to your child and have a happy relationship with your baby at such a tender and loving age! This dvd is totally worth your money!!

I only just came accross this site - what a wonderful resource.

I wanted to comment because after reading this article, i have purchased the Dunstan DVD as i am expecting in June. I also found a sample of the DVD on youtube. I will let you know how it goes!
PS does anybody know if they will be releasing more sounds for older bubs?

Re: Dunstan Baby Language

Great article! After watching Oprah we bought the Dunstan baby language DVD and it saved my life! I wish we had it with our first baby - I had such a difficult time with her too. A LOT easier this time round! We had to play the DVD a few times to really get all the sounds because I had a little trouble hearing the 4th word, but its worth persisting. It's really quite a miracle really if you think that we can now hear our babies . WOW. I've told quite a few of my pregnant friends about it. I agree with your idea that this should be taught in hospitals and every mum should learn it before coming home.

I personally thought it was a waste of money, but have heard of it working for others.

Re: Dunstan Baby Language

Hey good article, we got the DVD but sadly it didn't work for us.. our baby never said those words, we just worked out what he needed in our own way.  We were quite dissapointed that it didn't work.  We emailed them but never got any responce. However we did pick up some useful advice: different ways of burping and what to do for stomach pain/wind etc...

These things will not work for everyone, but I say give it a go, you never know until you try.

Re: Dunstan Baby Language

Oh my gosh! I am so sorry it didn't work! I really sat and listened and I know it's hard to hear a baby's cry when they all seem to sound sorta the same. You should have seen me...my ear up against my daughter while she's crying. I know I made a fool of myself but somehow it worked for me. I hope Priscilla can train people/nurses or someone so she can have help provided for people that have trouble hearing what she can hear.

Re: Dunstan Baby Language

Yes, we did the same thing we listened and listened, but bubs was just not saying the words.  I don't know how many times we watched the DVD, I've lost count.

Yes midwifes should be trained on how to teach mums and dads how to pick up the words.

Re: Dunstan Baby Language

Wish I knew about this with my first.  That was a really tough time.  This time around I'm alot better with my son.  he has only 3 cries, lol.  One for hunger, one to be put on his tummy and one to be changed....but a great thing to know, I'm sure it will really help moms, espcially thoughs first few weeks when you are trying to figure out what they need.  Well done~!

Re: Dunstan Baby Language

I saw that episode of Oprah too LOL. I wasn't even pregnant at the time, but i did remember it when bub was little. I didn't find it as helpful as you did, i could never really hear the sounds other than the hungry one.

I think that getting the hospital involved is a great idea! If new mothers had information like this when they leave the hospital, perhaps they would have just that little bit more confidence and strength to get thru the hard days.

Great advice and very well written.

Re: Dunstan Baby Language

I hope she starts to do house calls...she'd make so much money and think of all the moms that could use her help if they can't hear the cry like she can? I told another gal here that I wish she could train people and send them out to the field...that would be so much better.

Re: Dunstan Baby Language

It would be good! But i guess you have to have the ear for it. Even if they could just distinguish between hungry, tired, and windy it would help!
