Back to School - Back Pack Safety

PropelMom by PropelMom Speaking(July 2006) (rank 500+)

I recently ordered a back pack for my little kindergartner with his name embroidered on the back.  I figured it would make it really easy for him to spot it among the other children's bags.  And of course he loved it.

Then I read some tips about back

to school safety and one of the top ones was to not place your child's name on the outside of their bag.  It makes it easy for a stranger to call them by name and come across as familiar.

I'm quite sad that we need to look at the world this way, but it was a good point - so I thought I'd pass it along.  At least for the U.S. members.

So I'm off to buy a 3inch by 2inch sticker to cover his name.  We'll peel it off when he packs his bag to sleep at Grandma's house - she's not a stranger!

safety
same goes for shirts/jewelry with their name on them. inside the backpack is better, in case it goes missing.
make sur you child knows that they have to actually hear the password itself, not just be told, "I know the password" as so many little kids are very trusting.
roll play it a couple of times to practise. sounds silly, but it can really help.

Practice
I agree with practicing. Scary situations aren't so scary anymore if you've encountered it several times, even if it's just through practice. Heck, this works for grown ups too!

Role play
I actually have my mother role play most things as E doesnt let on to me that she has learnt things - but she loves to show off to mum.  So i tell her what we have covered and often i hear them going over it while I am in the next room or something.  It is great.
Peace

Child safety.

I think I've heard this before too, but have forgotten until now. Another thing I've also heard is to give children password so that not anybody can just approach them. Sometimes kids will go with strangers when they get told "I'm your mom's friend and she asked me to pick you up."
