Accidents Waiting to Happen Zones - Be smart, BE SURE...

OzBinky by OzBinky Talking Back(February 11th) (rank 12th)

Over the years I have seen several homes which are far from being child friendly - mine included. What, with my children growing up and leaving home I didn’t have to worry so much about this. Then my Grandson came along and now the parent in me has had an awakening.

Exposed plugs, power-points and heaters – poisons, pans on the stove and hot kettles...these are all pretty much the obvious things we look out for but what about the unobvious? What about the things that you think are unsafe or the things that don’t pose as much of a safety issue to you?

One issue I see so often is with TV sets. I have seen so many children who are allowed to go up and bang on the screen or pull themselves up using the TV cabinet or stand and for some reason I cringe at this.

Injuries stemming from TV’s tipping over have always been an issue/problem and with the big-screen TVs that are available now these injuries have increased and have also been the cause of several fatalities. Numbers which are needlessly rising...

The CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) has stated that with the prices dropping people are buying larger TVs; however, they are not buying new furniture to suit the product, leaving the TV unsecured.

According to the CPSC in 2005 there was an estimated 44,732 ‘tip-over injuries and 15 tip-over deaths. In 2006 the number of children under the age of 5 to killed by ‘television tip-overs’ had doubled by July of 2006. 10 children were killed, which is estimated to be 17 deaths a year – more than triple the average (CPSC)

In April of 2007 the Consumer Reports website stated that nine children aged 5 and below are killed a year due to furniture tipping over and that an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 people, mostly of whom are children, are hurt due to people not taking the steps to prevent what is an un-necessary accident.

The Consumer Reports website provides several steps to prevent such things from happening. These include the following:

Make certain that the furniture used for your TVs is stable.

Do not place Television sets on any furniture which has drawers that can be easily opened by children and used to climb.

Ensure that your TV is positioned as far back as possible

Do not put any item that will gain your children’s attention on top of the TV as this could encourage small children to climb so as they can get it.

Do not place your remote control on the top of furniture and in sight of children as they may climb to retrieve it.

Hide any cables and/or wires

Make sure to anchor unstable furniture

The CPSC website also offers this safety alert video on furniture tipping which can be downloaded and watched.

Even if you believe your home is free of these ‘waiting to happen’ accident zones – double check, triple check – be 100% sure and don’t allow tomorrow to be the day you wish you had have checked.

Cheers and take care

Great advice, sometimes we forget about those everyday items that can be so dangerous. Polly

It's so true about the tv's.  My girl and niece love to hit the tv.  My girl knows it's wrong and I have to often tell her not to touch it in fear of it falling....I cant wait until we get another one, much lighter.

Re: Accidents Waiting to Happen Zones - Be smart, BE SURE...

I know what you mean. I see my Grandson do this all the time...apparently though, its the new TV's that are likely to tip over....the older ones tended to be more stable...so they say anyway. If you think about it the older TVs were more built to stand alone or they were a great deal heavier and weren't able to be pushed over as easy as the newer ones.

I know I can feel the difference between my newer TV compared with the older model I have. Its these kind of things that may not be so ''in your face'' obvious though isn't it....

Cheers

Great Advice... and yes you defiently do need to keep a eye on little ones around your home.... My house isnt as child proof as it should be, but i know that if being watched, no little ones can hurt them selves...

Re: Accidents Waiting to Happen Zones - Be smart, BE SURE...

Great article.  Home safety is very important, and common sense should be used at all times.  We have a play pen around our tv, which keeps the kids off it.  We also have no shelves, tables etc in the lounge and play areas so that they can't pull it over or climb it.  Their toy box is usually kept in view so we know if they are climbing.  I just have to ask though, how on earth do you stop them climbing door frames or jumping on the bed? lol.

Most injuries to children occur in the home, and interestingly enough, most occur when it is men watching the kids.  I think that even drowning deaths at parks or injuries in public areas where it is lack of parental supervision (age appropriate) is also considered to be 'home' injuries, because they should be watched by the parents or carers at the time.

Re: Accidents Waiting to Happen Zones - Be smart, BE SURE...

Ya know I never knew that about accidents occuing more when men are watching the children....

The point you raised about acciedents in public places was a good one too....I've been gobsmacked recently over the amount of drownings there have been in public parks and lakes...its just terrible...

Mind you, it only takes a short amount of time for a little one to scamper away doesn't it....

Too sad...

Re: Accidents Waiting to Happen Zones - Be smart, BE SURE...

Again, the accidents outside of the home occur under the eyes of the men.  Trust me, my dad always had me at the emergency room when I was staying with him.  Let me see, there was me going to sleep on a swing and he pushed me to high, I fell of a slide, got my ankle caught in his big wheel and ended up with a very sore foot for a while and the list goes on.

While it only takes a short while for little ones to scamper off, it shouldn't be an excuse for failure to watch them.  Too many drownings occur at family picnics where there are many adults around, and yet, non are watching the kids.
