Car seats, must follow instructions...

Anonymous Author (February 2008)

I have been witness to some lazy and dangerous practices with my neice and her carseat.  I don't know why, but her mom never put her in the carseat the proper way, and it scares me to death!  We all know that most carseats have a shoulder straps the

buckle inbetween the legs and also have a clip the buckles over their chest.  This is so important to use the carseat the way it was designed other wise your child can suffer great truama in an accident.

For example, my SIL would put her baby in the car seat and clip the part over the chest.  Thing is that the clip there is not built to restrain a child on an impact, espcially from the side and back.  It will snap and the child can be ejected from the seat, resulting in more injuries.  Also if you clip the clip in between the legs, but not the one on the chest, same thing.  The baby can easily slip out of the straps and be ejected as well.  You have to use both!  My SIL told me that my neice would cry about it and fight to get out, but I never saw her even try to buckle her the right way, so my neice did not learn that it's important to be buckled that way. (turned out she was just lazy and that's how she buckled her, and only when her hubby and her hubby's MIL was not their...another story.  My neice gets buckled the right way when we go out, or is with other family members, and she loves to help buckle herself.  If your child is like this, make it a game to get them buckled, sing a song, and tell them how important it is to be safe in the car.  Not to mention that the police will give you a hefty ticket for not have them restrained properly.

Another thing that upsets me is when the child is not restrained at all.  Again, SIL would have my neice get into the car and she would just drive off, not putting her baby in the car seat.  I would see my neice bouncing on the seat as they were driving off.  And SIL does not drive slowly nor carefully at times.  Been there, done that, got freaked out.  So many babies get hurt, ejected from the car, or even die because they are not properly restrained.  And many parents don't realize that seatbelts are made for adults and older children, not infants and toddlers.   And even if you are going to park the car outside, or on the next street, please take the time to buckle them, you never know when an accident may happen.

When I was a child, I would always buckle up.  My "father" would often drive drunk home, with us kids in the car, and I was petrified.  He would do crazy things, like swerve all over the road and speed up then slow down really fast.  Let me tell you cause of it, no one is allowed to get into my car and not buckle up.  I don't move until we are all buckled, I'm that OCD about it.  Even my babies, I have to check their buckles if someone buckles them in, as I have gotten the question "Do we buckle this also?" meaning the buckle in between the legs.  I'm like "oh yes, you have to, that's the most imporant part."  It amazes me at the lacksadale attitude some people can have, and they have kids!

Ok, what I am saying is, please, please use the carseat the way it was intended, both the clip on the chest and the buckle in between the legs must be buckled for it to securely hold your child safely.  If they fus, perservire, after all it's their lives in our hands.  And make sure that the whole carseat does not move more then an 1" in any direction to ensure it's held properly in the car.

Re: Car seats, must follow instructions...

This is all true, but I think it's something that most people reading this site already know.

Some good tips on how to use a car seat safely are available here: Car Seat Safety guidelines. Also features and specifications of some good toddler car seat models available today are listed here: Toddler Car Seat.

Re: Car seats, must follow instructions...

i know people who do this as well because it is just to much effort. The youngest is 2 when they come with me i make sure they are in the seat and i refuse to drive with kids not in a seat if under 5. Has caused a lot of dramas but 1) I know they are safe and 2) i dont want a fine.

i have even had 6 8 and 10 yr old who got in the car with me and i asked them to put a seatbelt on and the 2 elest ones asked me WHY? I nearlyfell over. come on parents if there was a accident and your child was hurt or worse killed then you would be the 1st one's to whinge about it and it would always be someone else's fault. Thankfully I think about 98% of parents have enough common sense to do the right thing.

thanks for the article I have printed it and popped it in their letter boxes.

Re: Car seats, must follow instructions...

I just cannot beleive that anybody would jeopardise the safety of their children just because they are too lazy.....It is battle enough keeping our kids safe when we take every precaution possible let alone taking  risks like that. Good on you for taking a stance against this.....someone has to look out for your neice and clearly your SIL doesnt think it will ever happen to her .

Re: Car seats, must follow instructions...

I am with you in not being very tolerant of parents who don't take carseats seriously!  When my sister's family was using a carseat that didn't seem safe (it was purchased used and was just wearing out), I asked if I could buy my nephew a new carseat for his birthday gift.  They are *not* cheap, but they are very important for keeping our little ones safe.  I know that when we were young we often weren't safely restrained in cars, but our kids spend so much time riding in cars, we can't ignore the risks!

I understand that laws/recommendations are being updated all the time.  Now I believe the American Academy of Pediatricians is increasing the length of time for children to sit rear-facing.  Their weight should be 40 lbs before turning them to the front-facing position!  This is radically different than the previous recommendation of turning them around when they are 20 lbs and one year old!

Doctor friend tells me that we should not use carseats for more than 3 years (and replace them if they have been in a car accident) b/c the protective innards wear out.  This advice is hard to swallow!  We've reused carseats from one child to the next, but we did purchase a new infant carseat when our first one was over 6 years old, because there was a sticker on the carseat that said it was expired by that year.

I love buying clothing and baby gear at resale shops, but also have been told that it is not a good practice to buy used carseats, breast pumps or baby cribs/mattresses.

Re: Car seats, must follow instructions...

Trust yourself as a discerning parent to be able to look at a used car seat or other baby product and see if it is in good working order.  With carseats especially, check the straps to ensure there is no wear and that they haven't been twisted when used, (twisting stretches and weakens them).  Take the cover off and check the seat itself for any wear or tear.  Personally, if I am buying something 2nd hand, I like to meet the owner and you can get an idea about them, their home and their kids as to whether or not they are selling you a genuinely well looked after item.

Re: Car seats, must follow instructions...

car seats need to be buckled and installed properly.  being a paed nurse, i often care for children involved in car accidents.  one that stands out is the young girl who  i nursed with a spinal injury....her baby sister was not in her car seat properly and was ejected from the car....killed instantly.  you tell your SIL that its better to have a complaining child than a dead one.

Re: Car seats, must follow instructions...

Thanks for the GREAT reminder to ALL . . . .  I get really crabby when I see see young children NOT in car restraints . . . I am one of those people who will wind my window down and say something to the person driving the other car . . I also have a GREAT habit of writing down number plates and reporting them to the POLICE . . .

Cheers Kellz

Re: Car seats, must follow instructions...

wow. That's scary. I hesitate to even imagine what would happen in an accident when the child isn't properly restrained.   There are things that aren't negotiable with a child..and one of them is the not using a carseat. I always tell my son that the carseat keeps him safe. Thankfully he doesn't protest. But even if he did, I would rather have him in his carseat screaming his head off rather than not buckle him in.

Re: Car seats, must follow instructions...

thanks for the reminder!

seats and buckles need to be checked on a ongoing basis for tightness/slackness and its articles like these that help jog the memory

when bubs gets to the toddler seat stage i will insert a non slip mat as to minimise movement ......seats dont seem to cater for this

thanks again rue
