Five money saving tips for families

sealsista72 by sealsista72 Talking(February 2008) (rank 155th)

As I am a single Mum with five boys, I try very hard to save as much money as possible.  It's not always easy, but I do try my best.  Here are some of my tips to save a bit of money.

1.  Instead of buying your children's

clothes right when they are out of them because they have grown out of them or destroyed them, look out for the sales where they have clothes at 20 % off  for example, and buy them then, or put them on lay by.  Usually I put one outfit each on lay by for my children when there is a sale on.  One outfit I buy for them to wear on their birthdays, another one for Christmas and then the others I give for Christmas. It's amazing how much money you save and it means that your children will never be short of clothes.

2.  If you have children that are really rough on their socks, I find the best way to make sure they have plenty is to buy two or three of the same design or style of sock so if one gets a hole in it and the other in the pair is okay, you can keep the other sock as a spare for the others!!!

3.  Try to avoid having to go to corner/convenience stores if possible for your grocery items.  They are great for emergencies, but if you are buying a lot of items,  you end up spending a lot of money and don't get much to show for it.  It's definitely better to plan ahead and buy as much as you can at the supermarkets.

4.  Pay attention to the catalogue sales at the supermarkets and buy extra non perishable items when they are on sale.  You can save a fortune on certain items that way - especially toiletries!!!

5.  Just like with the clothing, don't leave your children's birthday and Christmas present buying to the last minute.  Try and plan what you want to buy them months before and see if you can manage to get what you want on sale.

I hope someone  finds these useful.

Re: Five money saving tips for families

Hi Tanya!

Having worked in retail for way too many years! 26...your ideas for purchases 'on sale' are smart. Another tactic is to buy off season, Mid january you will find the best bargains for Christmas stuff, mid-february you will find the best bargains for winter clothing, mid august you will find the best buys for summer clothing, and then late october/november the best buys of pre-Christmas, or end of season school purchases to make room for Christmas. About 2/3 weeks after any major holiday there will be sales to get rid of clearance.

In my grocery store, meats, fruits, veggies and breads are marked down I've found between 10am and 11am for the best pics...mind you, this is all USA season/east coast time frame. I recently had to buy 150 gals of oil to heat my home at a whopping $500.00...has put me out of wack financially and I'm still recovering.  I try to fill up only twice, I know I'll get hit hard in winter, use fuel up, so I can fill up tight to the top at the summer prices in mid june/late july when we have heat waves! I just hate that the oil companies have these billion dollar profits..ugh!!!

I shop at second hand clothing stores, and find great bargains there...very little gets purchased new...in the summer yard sales are a great way to pick up play cloths and other stuff like fishing rods, bikes, or household stuff....last year I bought a huge oval mirror with a golden frame I use for my dresser top clutter of makeup, etc, and a cute little side table...for $10.00.  Also, if you go to furniture stores, more times than not, in the back they will have stuff with minor scratches that have lots taken off...I love to haggle, as I know the mark-ups are huge....almost 300% on furniture and jewerly in dept stores...unreal.

I'm really lucky though, as my job pays me fairly well, and I get a social security for my son...only 580 per month, but enough to pay my mortage! Every bit helps! Great tips!

Take care, Simba1

Re: Five money saving tips for families

Hey Simba1!!!

Thanks for the extra tips.  I think second hand shops are great.  I haven't been to them for quite a while but I am thinking about getting myself some clothes there to last me just until I get back to my "normal" size!!! I just don't see much point in spending out a lot of money on clothes that will probably be lucky to last me another month or two.

Thanks, Tanya xo.

Re: Five money saving tips for families

Hi Tanya,

Thanks for the tips . . . I find corner stores are very pricey and we try to avoid them at all costs . .

Another GREAT tip for early risers is to go to your local bakery around half hour after they open . . Most bakery mark yesterday bread down to less than half price which is GREAT . . I often get rolls and bread for $5 which tends to last my family for a week . .

Cheers Kellz

Thanks Kellz, I never knew that!!! Unfortunately, my local bakery is a little too far away from me, but I know that other people are able to get to their bakery a lot more easier than I am.

Re: Five money saving tips for families

Thanks Cazza, that's exactly why I am stuck in a Housing Department house that's way too small for our needs.  And that's also why I am not even considering getting a car either.  I thought about going private rental, but I know of too many people that have been given thirty days notice to vacate and I just couldn't do that!!!
