Blocked Tear Ducts |

When Jessica was born I noticed she had alot of sleep in her eyes all the time, every time i wiped them it would be back with in 10 mins or so. I asked the midwife if something was wrong. She informed me Jessica must have blocked tear ducts. About
5 in every 100 babies are born with some level of blockage in one or both of the tear ducts.
Blocked tear ducts are cause when a plug of mucus or cells remain in the duct after birth, you may not notice this till your child is around one month old. I noticed Jessica had it instantly.
I was advised to clean jessica's eye by squirting some breast milk or boild water on to a cotton wool ball and wiping the effected eye from inside to out as often as needed. I also had to massage the ducts softly to help clear the blockage.
It was really frustrating at times because other mums would assume my baby had conjunctivits and they would steer clear of me even after i had told them its not catching.
The midwife told us that it would clear up by six months but if it hadn't by then some sergical intervention may be needed. Lucky for us jessica's cleared up with four months. but if your child still has it after 12 months you should consult your GP or an eye specialist to get the required help. The duct may need to be cleared with a fine probe and is done under an anaesthetic.
hope this helps anyone with this problem
