Babies Neck and Head favouring

Re: baby favours one side of head
Asked by

Question:

Hi out there,

My 8 week old son favours his right side of his head and his head is getting very flat and

out of shape.( he sleeps on his back. I try and put him on his side, but he really hates it and I don't like putting him on his stomach besides for tummy time. ) I have tried making him put his head on the the opposite side, but he starts screaming and crying etc and he won't stop .He always manages to escape from whatever I have done. Does anyone know what I can try and will his head stay out of shape?

Thankyou.

My Advice:

Hi there,

I went through this with my youngest and its very scary isn't it . . . Please do not panic, this can be treated easily although your bub may scream and cry for a little bit . .

It's important that you speak to your local Baby Health Nurse as he/she will be able to give you some minor excercises for bub as well as referring you to a physiotherapist. . . In the meantime here are a few thing to help:

  • Feeding - Only feed bub on his bad side . .  This makes him use the muscles
  • Floor time - Lay him on his back BUT only put his bright toys etc on his bad side. This will encourage him to use the muscles. Make sure that if you are on the floor too that you stay on his bad side as well.
  • Sleeping - When your son is sleeping roll up a towel or bunny rug and place it length ways down his back, make sure that he is laying on his bad side ..  The next time he sleeps change to his good side and keep swapping sides every time he sleeps . .
  • Massage - You can also give your bub a gentle light massage on his neck and shoulders. Make you use Baby Oil or Baby Butter when you do this so that you are gliding over and not pulling at the skin . . Gentle massage is great and your son will find it very soothing . .
  • Car seat/ pram -  When travelling in a Car Seat or Pram use a head support that will help keep your son's head straight. You can purchase some really good ones in most shops that sell baby products including supermarkets.
  • By doing all these things you will help your son amd teach him to use ALL his muscles, even at a young age babies are learning everyday . .

** Please not the the "massage" link is to a site which gives intructions to a gently way to preform baby massages

Thanks for reading and I hope this helps you and others out there . .

    Cheers Kellz

My son had this Flat head syndrome (Plagiocephaly) when he was a baby and favoured his right side.  I was also told by the doctors that babies like to turn to the light of a window and to arrange the cot so that he would have to turn his head the opposite way.  Some babies have to wear helmets to correct it but his wasn't that bad.

    Great advice

    Hi,

Thanks for you feedback and also the tip about the the window. I had not heard of this but it is a very very good idea and makes a lot of sense . .

Fantastic advice Alana, I hope you decide to repost your baby steps articles at some stage, as I think that they were the best articles on the topic, that I have ever seen on the net.

    Hi,

Thanks for you feedback . . I will be redoing my "BABY STEPS" series once I have time to redo the whole series as it needs updating and some more tweaking. I can be a perfectionist.

    Thanks Kellz

Having had 4 babies so far, I have been very lucky not to have probs like this.  Great advice!  I will be sure to track it down if this next one has this issue.

By the way, love the copyright format!  now if it gets reported, we can all throw a tanty! lol.

    Hi Arna,

Thanks for the feedback . . .  you are lucky not to have gone through this as it can be quite scary for a mum. As for the copyright format, I have done this as two articles from my series that I have removed have been published in paper format. Copywriting protects me and also Minti . . .

    Hiya Kellz

My son was like this..always favoured his right side. I was really naive tho, I was more concerned about making sure that his little ear was flat down against the bed! I didnt want his ear to stick out..please, how stupid was I back then lol. This info would have been of more benefit to me 11 yrs ago kellz lol!

    Hi honey,

Isn't it amazing how much we grow when we become parents . . I know how much I look back and often laugh at some of the things that I did first time round . . .  Thanks for your feedback.

    Cheers Kellz
