Water Birth - My story .

emmie by emmie Talking Back(March 2008) (rank 26th)

I never intended on having a water birth at all right from the start i was going to have a natural birth no drugs as the doctors told me that my pelvis would not be strong enough to give birth naturally which made me even more determined. I was thinking

i will show them the last result would not be to let them cut me open to get my baby out.

On the saturday morning i started getting real bad pains in my stomach and as i was 9 days over. I knew what these pains were for i got home as quick as i could ws panicky as hell as i had kylie with me and did not want her to see me go into labour although she could tell i was in pain and got all panicky too. I called my dad and told him to come over and i thought the baby was coming to he hurried over i then called barry and told him to get home he immediatly knew why .

When he aarrived i was in pretty much a state basically through panicking as the day went on these pains came closer and closer together as i never knew barry said im not in labour its jus contractions and i was thinking if this aint labour wat pain have i got to come ???By now i knew these were contractions by the eevening they were 3 mins apart but from here on was agony i could feel my pelvis grinding constantly it felt like it was going to explode the contractions were coming faster and faster i was rolling around on the sofa and floor i thought i was dying lol , by this time barry was worried as i could have hurt the baby but the pain i could not bear .

The midwife arrived and she did an examination and said i was only 2cm but withthe pain i had to go to the hospital for gas and air and i was very stressed. I couldent sit and i couldent stand i was pretty much useless , by the time i got to the hospital i was 3cm with contractions 1min apart  the amount of pain i was in i had to be in labour surely 5 mins later i was measured again 5cm. The midwife said ok ur only 5cm but u are having a labour before time which she explained that jus means im having the labour pains but not actually in labour they tried getting me to lay on a bed , sit on a ball , sit on the toilet , walk around but whatever i did it did not ease the pain. Then they started offering me drugs i had gas and air  but she wanted me to have pethadine i said no i dont want it and she was arguing with me thatt i was getting stressed and it was no good for either me or the baby. So i asked for any other ways wihtout giving me drugs that was when she mentioned me having a water birth i liked that idea .

She then took me down to a ward as i had to be in labour so i carried on with the gas and air litterally 5 mins of being there this pain suddenly got a whole lot worse and to make everything a whole lot better barry had gone home to check on kylie!! I was ringing the buzzer and nobody was coming i then started to what i tried was running down the corridor as i could hardily run as i was in labour where i found the midwife. She stayed with me and called Barry and luckily he got there quick i was taken down to the pools by this time Barry had arrived i then gave back the gas and air and i was basically pain free well almost .

Just after 5 mins of being in the tub i felt the need to push the midwife said i wasnt quite ready only push if i was sure as i may tear bad but do i listen no only 6 mins after beginning to push and where i had my arms and legs through the bars i could see my beautiful babys gorgeous dark hair and the best time for me to tell barry she had his hair haha and after that it took a further 9 mins later my darling chloe myself and barry were holding together in the water i then had to let go in order to climb the steps safely with her barry carried her out of the pool i panicked because she wasnt crying which barry found amusing they then explained the cord had not been cut yet , then barry kissed baby Chloe on the head and handed her to the midwife so that he could cut the cord and there was my babys cry i longed to hear .

My baby daughter Chloe Elissa was born weighing 6Ib 13oz on sunday 25th june 2006. (now loves water cant keep her away from it )

Thanks for reading

I wish water birth had been an option for me, but I wanted to deliver in a hospital and it just wasn't an option where we lived.

Re: Water Birth - My story .

I so want a water birth, but not having private health cover, I don't qualify.  Also, our public hospital isn't set up for it.  No baths in the maternity wing!  Imagine that!  Our private hospital apparently caters to water births, but I don't qualify!  Stupid health system, they need to have birthing clinics that cater for all women, not just those that can pay for it.

Any way..... Sounds like you had a pretty typical 1st time labour.  I was  in agony with Ayla, just coughing brought contractions on!  I opted for pethadiene because if I didn't, I would have been going upto surgery as I was very distressed and not breathing properly.

Thanks for sharing your stroy.  I can only dream about a water birth, but love reading others experiences.

Re: Water Birth - My story .

Are you serious??? It was given to me as an option when i was pregnant to make it easier as i kept saying how i was going to have a normal drug free birth i was told i would have to have a c section because my pelvis was weak they wasnt even sure my pelviswasstrong enough to carry baby for 9 months but the big problem is  im stuborn as a bull and said no natural . It was drugs or water i chose water although i did  have a little gas and air but i didnt need it once i was in the water when i got inthe water i just got it into my head she was coming out and thats wat i did . But once her head was out i could see it i hadthis brown hair visiting me popping out to ssay hello hehe but i wasworried she was going to drown (i know they cant breathe until the cord is cut but i didnt at the time) so i pushed her out as quick as i could i grabbed hold of her made my way to barry where i passed her  still connected to me and made my way out the pool i freaked because she wasnt crying so barry cut the cord and there was my beautiful daughter screaming PERFECT of course i had  the first cuddle beforethey cleanedher up

Re: Water Birth - My story .

Thanks matey i was told right through my pregnancy ' you are not going to be able to deliver your baby naturally u need a csection' i said i think not i will have my baby naturally drug free they said my pelvis  would not take the strain it would  snap but there was no way on this earth i was listening  i have no belief in drs so i did what i felt was right and what do you know i did it . If you ever get the chance go for it its fantastic matey just watch out for the poop hehehe.
