Global Guardians - 2 Protecting All Children

llmunchkin by llmunchkin Young Parent(March 6th) (rank 4th)

Apathy is the one thing that empowers the abusers of human rights in this world.  They rely on the fact that people will turn a blind eye if they think something won’t directly affect them.  Well why not make sure there isn’t a risk of it affecting those who you care about now and in the future too?  I don't usually write advice about events in the news, and the world in general, however I am always fired up about this topic.

Slavery – more people are now enslaved per capita than ever before in history.

Forced Labour:  Workers are forced into labour under threat of violence, such as beating, rape or death.  Even when workers comply, they are still at risk and they are often attacked, raped and murdered.

Bonded Labour:   Someone is forced to work, to repay a debt, or money paid in advance. In some cases people are born into bonded labour supposedly repaying a family debt. This practice is illegal in many countries, and often people work in poor conditions that violate their human rights.

Child Labour:  According to UNICEF article I read last year, an estimated 218 million children aged 5-17 are engaged in child labour; excluding domestic labour.  Many of these children are working in dangerous situations, affecting their health and development.  Some are forced into pornography, paedophilia, prostitution, and are victims of trafficking.

Human Trafficking:  The movement of people from one place to another – often by deceitful means.  This is often for purposes of slavery, sexual exploitation, and includes the trade of babies for adoption.  Human Trafficking is one of the 3rd most profitable criminal trades in the world, after drug smuggling and gun running.

Child Abuse – We are adults, it is our duty to protect ALL children from this.

Neglect:  This can be the failure to provide basic necessities, for example: Adequate care; safe environment, appropriate shelter, nutritional food, educational opportunities medical care, and emotional support, are some examples.  It also includes failure to leave a child in the supervision of safe adults, and abandonment.

Violence:  Children are suffering from violent attacks, either from their parents, or other trusted adults.  Violence breeds violence, unfortunately it is often victims who become perpetrators – this is no excuse. There is NO acceptable excuse for physical violence against a child.  (This is violence above and beyond a general tap or smack for misbehaving).

Sexual Abuse:  This is any sort of inappropriate talk, touching or intercourse with an underage child.  For some reason people are overtly concerned with stranger danger, and have a preconceived idea of what a paedophile looks like.  The terrible truth is that these sick people look like someone you know - literally!  In 90% of cases that are reported, the perpetrator is known to the victim, and is often a relative or trusted person known by the family.

Acknowledge that these things exist in our society; be aware that they are far more prevalent than you think. Open your eyes, your heart and your mouth; speak up for those that can't do so for themselves.  Don’t be complacent, if you think something is wrong, do something about it, observe, investigate, seek advice and report wrong doings.  Say NO to offenses against human rights - especially against children, lobby your local government, access the websites, donate your time, knowledge, resources or money – take ACTION, it cures APATHY, and it saves lives.

It is never too soon to start creating a world that you would want to live in!

Children for sale: UK's new slave trade... Telegraph.co.uk January 21st 2008

At least these kids are going for a few thousand pounds.  The average price for a cocoa slave is $30, that'd be better for your ego than being kidnapped I suppose. ()

What price would you put on your own child's head?  Don't ALL children deserve the same respect and care from the global community?

Re: Global Guardians - 2 Protecting All Children

Another pet subject of mine, no soap box today....well done for being this subject to the fore-front again Lui.....espeically all the links.

Your so right....."What kind of world are we living in, to allow this to happen" We need to speak up....lobby our governments....and not just once and think, that's fine. But we need to badger, annoy and keep lobbing....with the hope that eventually someone may listen.

In this day & age, this is saddness beyong belief that these tragedies are happening to million's of children world wide.

Cheers Janice

Re: Global Guardians - 2 Protecting All Children

You don't need to get on your soapbox Janice, I'm on it (it was higher than mine).  LOL... Seriously, when you look into the depth of these issues and realise how rife they are, I fail to see how anyone can still think it won't affect them.

We are all part of the global community, and every time an crime is committed against another human, and goes unpunished, or ignored - we condone it.  Turning a blind eye and looking after ourselves and our own interests will not cut it in the long run.  Who do you think will be looking after you, if you don't care for others?  What is your purpose in life if you think it is ok for your local authorities and government to look after you, but not worry about other people?

Look around your home... Where do your clothes, toys, food, furniture, furnishings, cosmetics etc. come from?  It does effect each and every one of us, and as consumers, we have the power to create change.  Perhaps companies should start with some ethical labelling to go along with the rest of their product info.

Re: Global Guardians - 2 Protecting All Children

I whole heartly agree with you LUi about  some form of ethical labelling, on any product that we purchase. I've written many letters to governing bodies, to which i've had no response....really makes me so angry....it's like if it's not happening to my family...i don't want to know about it.

Re: Global Guardians - 2 Protecting All Children

Thanks Lui. We know it happens but it is hard to know what to do about it. It is the old story of the poor vs rich and a lot of the toys that we buy for our children are made in these sweat shops. We don't even need all these fancy things but someone is making money and this is what it is all about. So close to easter now and all those poor people making chocolate. The only thing to do is not buy into it but I can't see that happening. Sorry now I am sounding defeatist but we can only do so much. I am glad you are putting it out there. I for one will be trying my best not to get any  unneccessary items. How do we get our hands on the list of companies?

Your other part on child abuse is much harder to detect but I wish more people would speak out and I wish more could be done to help these children as this system is not working.

Re: Global Guardians - 2 Protecting All Children

Companies rely on people having the attitude that there isn't anything they can do about it... The buck stops with every single one of us.  What our children need to survive and grow, compared to what we give them and what they want are entirely different things.

No matter what you are purchasing, you can do research into the company and look up their websites, and consumer info lines and ask them about where they source their products.  It isn't about halting commerce, it is about stepping up to the plate as a community and forcing the big companies to be accountable.

The thing with child abuse is that nobody wants to see it... Yet nearly every time it is in the media, a neighbor or some associate to the family goes, oh yeah, I thought something like that would happen, or they were weird or something along those lines.  Don't ever allow yourself to be THAT person, and open your eyes if you are remotely concerned and follow your heart.

Re: Global Guardians - 2 Protecting All Children

PS - You asked what we can do as individuals.  Well there are heaps of things, and it only takes a moment.  We all have the internet at our finger tips, so we are all quite capable of making a difference.

After a quick glance at my kitchen bench, I decided to send this email off to Cadbury and Nestle.  I edited it to say coffee products and sent it off to Moccona and Cafe Palazzo as well.  It is a small step, but it is a start to making our own Minti list about what response companies give.

To Whom It May Concern

I am currently a consumer of your products and as such, I would like to verify whether or not your cocoa products are supplied by ethical sources.

Are you able to guarantee that none of the labourers working on the cocoa plantations / farms that your products come from are victims of human trafficking, child labour, bonded or forced labour?

Global Guardians 2: Chocolate is bittersweet... Child slaves harvesting cocoa!

Wondering what you can do to help?  How about contacting your favourite chocolate manufacturer and asking them where they source their cocoa from.  If they can't guarantee in writing 100% that it is NOT produced by child slaves, then don't purchase that brand.

Think about this, and these children next time you are indulging in your favourite chocolate covered treat.  YES, it is all the common brands, and YES, you can make a difference!  Why do they get away with it?  Because WE let them, say NO, and don't support this child abuse.

Re: Global Guardians 2: Chocolate is bittersweet... Child slaves harvesting cocoa!

Look like an interesting article at a glance...i haven't been able to read it all yet but i just wanted to comment.....I think it is fairly common knowledge that a lot of these brands, smaller ones as well, are owned by huge conglomerates and they basically get away with murder.

Chocolate being a subject close to my heart i shall go back and read further!

Re: Global Guardians 2: Chocolate is bittersweet... Child slaves harvesting cocoa!

I decided to write a brief article on it, unfortunately it is in the sin bin, and then it will need editing and no doubt go back again.  N E hoo, you might find the Fair Trade Families group quite interesting, I know that I need to visit it more and contribute more too.

Re: Global Guardians - 2 Protecting All Children

LOL, you are so rich for having those three tear aways, and you know it!   Yes, it is highly profitable, as you can imagine.

They use kids for war, slaves, porn... They take young women to be prostitutes, sex slaves, breeders for the baby trade.  There are so many people born into bonded situations that they are virtually slaves anyway.

They ship them to western countries as cheap labour, they lure them under pretext of a better life and steal their money and passports.  You have a vivid imagination, if you can think of it, they are making money out of it.

Re: Global Guardians - 2 Protecting All Children

Thanks Teshia, people seem to think that this is something from the past, or that it only happens in far away countries... It happens right under our noses, and we don't see it, as we aren't aware of it.  Left to it's own devices, it will continue to grow, as it is a thriving global industry.

Human trafficking occurs in the UK, Canada, the USA, New Zealand and Europe...  When adults are trafficked, their children are born into slavery or bonded labour situations, including prostitution etc.  The people who do this are not going to give up easily, next to drugs and arms, it is the 3rd most profitable business in the world.

What kind of world are we living in, that we allow this to continue?

OMG Lui, I knew all of this happened but not to what extent. What is our world coming to? We need to put a stop to this NOW! Thanks for all the information, it's truely interesting (and heartbreaking) to read about this - really gives you a kick into reality! xxoo

Re: Global Guardians - 2 Protecting All Children

It's not really big news headline stuff, I guess it isn't sordid or able to be manipulated enough to get attention.  It is most likely cheaper for governments to turn a blind eye than rescue and rehabilitate people.
