Things that i considered when picking Childcare

Amerlinwinga by Amerlinwinga Talking(March 2008) (rank 176th)

In my area there is 14 childcare centres and the best way i could chooses is word of mouth. Everyone has different opinions so you have to narrow it all down to 3 centres.

One friend of mine said the ABC centre she sent her children was good so

i went to check that out and the other one was a local council runned centre and the last was sunkids. I found this to be a big decision to make, what suited my needs and who would give my children the best of care.

I had decided that i was going to go and visit these centres and see what they had to offer me and my children, so i had to make time to go and visit them. Before i left i had put together a list that i would look for when i went!

These are just a few that i had on my list:

*Do the children look happy and content?

*Are the premises clean and tidy?

*Is there artwork displayed throughout the building?

*Are the toileting areas child-friendly and hygienic?

*Is there equipment out for the children to play with?

*What is the menu like for the children?

*How long the staff have served at the centre? As you can tell if they are happy where they are!

*Will the centre do portfolio for the children to take home at the end of the year?

*Ask to have a look at the programming for the room your child will be in.

*ask if they have routines in the room that your child will be in?

*ask about costing and what happens over holidays or when they are sick

*hours of operation

*do they supply the nappies, hats ect.

This was my list but there are a few more question that you could ask if you could remember them . I started with half this list but when i got home i remembered so i ask at the next centre i went to.

I ended up choosing the place where they made me and the kids more welcome and where the staff and the kids looked happy. I ended up choosing sunkids because there was so much more to offer my children then everywhere else. Now im in the delemma do i take my oldest out next year to send her to a normal kinda or do i leave her in childcare that will run a kinda room next year? Im am studing this now so maybe when i have finshed i maybe can give some more advise.

Re: Things that i considered when picking Childcare

Great article Tee........I've worked in Child Care for 9 years and the Centre I work at is considered the best Centre in our area and I'm pretty proud to be a part of it. I only found it by chance too as I started as a student there while doing my diploma 9 years ago. All our staff have been there for 10 years, besides one of our part-timers, who is an ex-parent and our Trainee who only started this year. We all love working there and have a great relationship with our parents.

You're right about the word of mouth too..........choosing a child care centre can be so scary.....I know, I've seen and heard about some pretty bad places. The best indication is how open and friendly staff are, how happy the kid's are and if everyone looks like they actually want to be there.......because in reality child care is a pretty hard and highly stressful job, but a good carer doesn't show it.

Hi Amanda!

Ahh you would come home really tired and buggered! Im amazed that you would have time for anything else haha. I dont know if i could deal with all those kids for 8 hours or more. It takes a strong person to do this. I do believe you are right that a happy staff make happy children.

Thankyou for sharing chook love you and miss you,

Re: Things that i considered when picking Childcare

Thanks for the advice! My two cents -

The trend over the past ten years or so has been for childcare centers to do a lot more paperwork, such as writing report cards for very young children, filling out checklists or form about the conditions of the place, your child's behaviour etc. Whilst I understand that some parents may find this reassuring, please kep in mind that every moment spent writing a report card is one moment less spent interacting with your child.

I'm not saying that we should do report cards or keep records, I guess I just wanted to add that "How much time during the day do staff spend on paperwork?" is a good one to add to the list.

And the question about the staff turnover and how happy are they - it's hard to find a stronger indicator for the quality of a center than that!

Great article.

Re: Things that i considered when picking Childcare

You are right about the paper work. THe center that i chose take alot of pictures of the children and stick it in a book but they have hired and mum to run those books .....The mum also does the pasting of painting and picture in a scrap book so parents can take it home at the end of the year. Busy little mum haha. Omg if i was given a report card i wouldnt know what to do with it haha she is still only 3yo haha.

Thanks for you 2 cents i love it! Thanks for taking the time to read.

Re: Things that i considered when picking Childcare

Hi honey,

Thanks for the GREAT tips that you have here . .  We are currently looking into some daycare for sumara so she can have some interaction with other little ones her own age . . For us the biggest issue has been about whether they can handle a child with multiple food allergies, you'd be amazed at how many centre's really are not equipped to handle this problem . .

cheers Kellz

Re: Things that i considered when picking Childcare

That would be hard! But i would ask when was the last  time that had completed first aid???? I know that it has to updated reg but depending on the centre they might not be as strict on this. It would be important for you to feel a little more comfy if there was something to happen and they could handle the situation to there best of there ability.
