How do you explain to children about Easter?

Anonymous Author (March 18th)

How do you explian to your children about Easter when you dont believe in the whole chocolate side of it?

Well this is the delemer we have had to face this year as the kids are old enought to start to ask.

this is what we have done......

We are of a Christian family so we Celebrate the death and rise of Jesus, so for this we see our family and have lunch and dinner with them.

Alex asked my yesterday " Mum why cant we have chocolate?"

My answer was that Chocolate is not part of the meaning of what we believe in. I told Alex and Charlie the whole story of the crusixiction of Jesus and i think they kind of understand it a bit better now.

It is very hard to have had done this as so many people do the whole chocolate thing and children can be mean if things are not the same with them. but you need to hold onto your faith and what you believe in. you also need to tell your children that everyone has their own beliefs and they might say you are wrong when you are not. it is what you believe in that is important.

This is the same with us for Christmas too as my husband and I dont believe in the gift giving to the extent that people do. we buy a present for the children and then we share food with family and spend time with family.

This is my thoughts on Easter. i would write more but i dont want to upset people with it so i will it at this.

Liz

Re: How do you explain to children about Easter?

Great article Libby. Im not upset by this at all. I take people for who they are. You do what you think is right at times like this and if people don't accept what you are doing, then in my eyes they don't fully understand you or where you're from. I'm not a christian, but i have alot of friends from different nationalities etc and they do what they have been bought up to do for the special occassions, and i don't laugh at them, or be nasty, as what they're doing is what they believe in, and it's their way of doing things. I respect you for what you are doing with your children. Well done.

Re: How do you explain to children about Easter?

Great article Liz.

My oldest knows the true meaning of both Good Friday and Easter. He knows why we eat fish on Good Friday and he knows what happened on Easter Sunday. But all that said and done we still enjoy the fun side of it with the egg hunt. I grew up going to Mass every Sunday, so Easter is a huge part of me and even though I haven't been to Mass in such a long time, the values and meanings are still there. My husband will tell you there is no way you will catch me eating meat on Good Friday....!!!!

I think it's so important to respect each others choices too and I really don't see why this article has such a low vote.......it's so sad to see that some people can be so narrow minded.....these people/person really should explain themselves.

Well Done Liz

Re: How do you explain to children about Easter?

whatever your religious/spiritual persuasion is- easter like christmas has a way of bringing 'families'  together

to give chocalate or not to give? is a reflection of ones beliefs and culture

Religion is not alone when deciding the protocol for giving. Culture can play a deciding part.  Customs vary from culture to culture and so to the importance of giving.

thankyou for sharing your way at easter

great article liz! well done it would be difficult not to give in to the hype of these major holidays, kudos to you chickie ::)'s religion and how one defines their beliefs can be so complex from an external perspective, yet it can be so obvious to the ones experiencing it.

Re: How do you explain to children about Easter?

Hi liz..

I respect your way, as everyone to their own .We have always celebrated easter  as the same as xmas,, time for giving and receiving, and also time to reflect on how important Family is to you all...

My foster family is catholic and when i lived with them, we went to mass, and still my Mum was always the one that made easter exciting for us all..

Giving other items besides chocolate to some children is fine.......

Re: How do you explain to children about Easter?

I am also a Christian and my children get chocolate just like everyone else. In my house first and foremost we focus on the religious side and the chocolate is just another treat of the day. It is OK to do both. I really can't say no when everyone else gets it. It is just like saying NO you can't have Christmas presents because that is not what Christmas is about. It is all part of being a kid so that is why I don't agree. But your life and your children and I praise you for doing what it is you believe in.

Re: How do you explain to children about Easter?

My kids understand the REAL easter and like to tell their friends. Not once has this caused any trouble. We are a christian family but we still let them have a few eggs. They must wait for sunday because that is the day of celebration.I do know where your coming from.

Re: How do you explain to children about Easter?

Hi honey,

I applaud you for you belifes and its great that you atand by them but I just wanted to point out the eggs etc do have thier place . . Here are some inserts from a christian Website:

  • Eggs are often identified with Easter. Long a symbol of fertility and immortality, the egg reminds Christians of the rock tomb from which Christ arose
  • Lamb: This symbol representing Christ is depicted carrying the flag of victory in many central and eastern European homes. John the Baptist described Jesus as the "Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). The Passover lamb (Exodus 12) foreshadowed Jesus' sacrifice

Here is the LINK if you want to check things out more . .  Perhaps you can look at ways to work with both eggs and your chiristian beliefs. This is what we have down. hubby's family are tradionalists with Easter christian beliefs. So we have found a way to combine both my hubby's family's belief and mine . . .

Cheers Kellz

Re: How do you explain to children about Easter?

the eggs and rabbits are actually pagan. the christians wanted the pagain to become christians so they took on a few of their believes. ie the rabbit and the egg, as well as when christmas is as it is one of the solices.
