Music and your child

loopylisa by loopylisa Talking(March 2008) (rank 271st)

Has anyone ever thought about how important music could be to your little ones? When I was pregnant with my twinnies I wpuld get a definate response from them when I would listen to some of my favourite music(I'm a bit partial to a bit of rock music). They would

take great delight in kicking my insides about. But now,a few years down the line I wonder if they didnt actually like that type?

I have a friend who is into her fourth pregnancy and swears by the sound of dolphins.I suppose that the sound would mimic fluid in the womb.Every day at 1pm she puts this cd on and her baby makes really light movements in her tummy. She has done this with all of her kids-the eldest is 12. When her kids have been born she has told me that she continues with this ritual and it helps them to develope sleep patterns. She does say that sometimes it can be a bit of a hindrance because her child of 4 at nursery still wants the cd on in an afternoon after nursery for her nap!!

If you think about it,a lot of nursery toys such as lullaby toys and cot mobiles all have these soothing music tones. My children now are generally quite noisy and can't stand quiet(especially one of them) so maybe if I had played more soothing music while I was pregnant then I would have much less of a disruptive household.Bring on the Mozart!!!

Re: Music and your child

My kids just listened to whatever I had playing, and now have a very wide range of music appreciation. Some of their friends think they are wierd, and then end up copying a lot of it. I tended to play a lot of musicals and they have all grown up with them,

Re: Music and your child

I also believe playing soothing  or classical music to an un-born baby or even once their born.....helps promote a better sleeping pattern....relaxation & in most cases a calmer child.

Great  advice!

Cheers Janice

Re: Music and your child

I too am a big believer of soothing music, it was the only way my oldest went to sleep as a baby and even now it still relaxes him.

Great article

i agree with you with this!

im a big fan of playing classical music to my children and i used white noise ocean sounds to help my son establish a good sleep routine in the first 12 weeks. if the soundmaker was on he woudlnt wake up!

Re: Music and your child

Hi honey,

Thanks so very much for this . . I am a firm believer in the use of music to help relax or stimulate your child . . All my children have responded to music and as Sumara was so ill inside my belly I used classical music to relax her. When she was born she still responded to classical music . .

Cheers Kellz

Re: Music and your child

I've always had music on while i was pregnant, and when i do now, it relaxes them. I would always put the dolphin relax cd's on and other relaxation one's too, and you get relaxed to the max with them on.

Re: Music and your child

I never specifically played music to our girls in the womb, however I did and do play music in the background all the time. Both girls love all forms of music.  R 7yrs play's harp and fiddle and little Caty 3yrs has alway's been fascinated with the piano, she actually sits properly and holds her hands in the correct extension, all just by watching us play which is quite cute. I dont know if this works but I would definitely give it a try, with soothing sounds, if I had another child. Both our girls however like to go to sleep listening to story tapes and I read a lot  out loud during both pregnancy's so who knows, it may well be a help, it certainly cant hurt. Thank you for sharing.
