No fuss health boosts for you and your kids.

loopylisa by loopylisa Talking(March 2008) (rank 281st)

Every now and then we all need a little extra help with our day to day regime of eating and general well being.I think that a few easy and relatively painless changes can benefit ourselves as well as our children. These suggestions are really easy and may even help your

childs health more than your own!

Aim to eat a broad spectrum of colour in every meal to ensure the best mix of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Encourage children to eat wholegrain cereals rather than the ones aimed at kids.Mine love fruit and fibre, porridge, weetabix, shredded wheat etc. The salt and sugar content in these cereals is kept to a minimum.I changed my kids to these because I found they were 'hyper' sfter the so called cereals for kids.

Aim to drink a glass of milk every day.My kids still have milk before bed.If yours don't like it you could try and make smoothies or milkshakes with fresh fruit.

Invest in a skipping rope.Mine love it and burns off loads of energy, can only be a good thing, and it's free!

Try to eat meals together when possible. You can discuss the day much easier when sat eating a good meal and sat at a table.

Have a fresh fruit salad chopped in the fridge for snacking after school or when you're peckish.I do blueberries, strawberries and kiwi, the colours are really bright and attract kiddies.

I give my kids a small piece of cheese after meals. My dentist told me it neutralises acid and prevents plaque build up-great if your kids aren't too hot at cleaning their teeth-they must still clean them though.

Introduce omega 3plus into your diets. You can buy enriched foods, eggs, margarine and yoghurts etc. Most experts, and the teaching staff at my twinnies school, say they are vital for brain healthand good for your heart.

Switch to wholegrain bread instead of white.I let mmine have white toasted but for sandwiches they eat wholegrain.I believe it's really important to eat as healthily as you can. If you think how much you could spend on crisps and biscuits you could buy lots of fresh fruit for the same value.

All kids would rather eat crisps than an apple-unless you're very lucky, but if you don't have crisps in the cupboard, yet there are apples I bet they would chose the apple. If they're hungry they will eat it.

Re: No fuss health boosts for you and your kids.

I must be a lucky one!

My kids pick fruit and veg over junk food pretty much all of the time. We have junk food in the house but the fruit is always first to run out and biscuits and bars etc will sit in the cupboard for ages.

Dinner is good because they love their vegies and when I want them to eat something new I just hide it in their food

Re: No fuss health boosts for you and your kids.

My oldest will always go for the junk food first but he also knows that he must have fruit and dairy every day and I make sure he knows why and explain to him how each food is good for him. My youngest is pretty good, he doesn't like lollies, ice cream, chips, will only eat a small amount of chocolate and he doesn't like soft drink........So at least I've only got to battle with one child.......lol

Great article by the way.

Re: No fuss health boosts for you and your kids.

I will only buy raw sugar as well, white pasta and rice are also out. I tell my kids that fruit is natures lollies. The best method i think is not to buy the junk and then its not there to be eaten. I do give them a treat now and again but they know if they bug me at the shop they get nothing!

One of my kids has allergies so that made us all eat healthier anyway

Great advice

Re: No fuss health boosts for you and your kids.

i wil say i am one of the lucky mum's. my kids will go fruit over junk any day. with the exception of mc donalds. (they have been drawn in by the darkside. LOL) but my son had a nutrionalist come to the school last year and she told these pre primaries that white bread is poisionus and that they did a study on it with lab rats and after 7 days these rats died so now my son wont eat white bread. LOL scare tactics huh. they like crisps and junk food but if there is fruit there they will eat that first.

great advice

Re: No fuss health boosts for you and your kids.

What a horrible way to tell children about the 'badness' in white bread. Lets face it though,I don't really think rats would like white bread anyway,I think they would much prefer something delish from down a sewer!!!hee hee

Re: No fuss health boosts for you and your kids.

What a GREAT article . . I have always been so lucky with my children as they have always preferred to good stuff instead of the junk!! I am one of those parents that does not tend to buy junk . . As many know I recently had a an ex Minti member (Deb) come to visit, Deb was a wee bit naughty and brought some lollies. Deb was shocked to realise that my 22 month old didn't know what they were and my 8 yr old also commented "that she only gets to eat those on very very special occoasions" . .

Thanks for your article

Cheers Kellz

Ooooowwww what a cruel mum you are-my kids friends think I'm cruel because I only let them have sweets on a Saturday, and that depends on their behaviour.

Re: No fuss health boosts for you and your kids.

This is excellent advice on how to eat healthy  not just children but adults alike! Especially in this day & age where to many supermarkets target our children with products that are not good for them.

You put some great points across on how to achieve a good eating regimen.

Cheers Janice

PS> I still think that it is nice to give children special treats, sometimes.

Re: No fuss health boosts for you and your kids.

Hi Janice, totally agree with you that kids should have treats too. The thing that I have noticed with mine is that you can tell within an hour that they have eaten something not so healthy-their behaviour goes off the wall.I was told by my health visitor that kids are better off eating chocolate rather than sweets like jelly babies, purely because they get the 'hit' from sugar in choc and it wears off whereas sugary jellies, the sugar stays on the teeth and constantly disperses sugar into their saliva.A bit scientific but I bet it's right.

Re: No fuss health boosts for you and your kids.

AWESOME advice.

Since we started spending more time with my bf, he is a bit of a hippy, and loves all things natural and organic. Our highly processed diet has taken on a more natural approach, and the benefits that Ive noticed in the kids health and behaviour is amazing. It tastes better too!

Sure sometimes it can be a bit more work, but hte benefits far outway convenience now that Ive seen the effects its had on my family.

5 stars from me, well done.

Re: No fuss health boosts for you and your kids.

Great advice... I had to months ago change what was in my pantry and go healthy for my children, as my youngest would gauge on heaps of packets of chips.. now she is happy to have rice crackers, and healthy biscuits,, and when we go to the shops she pick a packet of rice snacks over a packet of chips...

All in moderation is good for them i say, as kids need some sweeteners in their bodys,.....
